Crossing the Veil (IC)
Death. It's almost as old as life. Everybody dies eventually. Death is everywhere. Every day there are new germs, toxins, injuries, illnesses and catastrophes for us to face. The fact we survive at all is miraculous.
On the other side of death stand the Reapers. Reapers used to be human, then death came knocking, taking those who dies in the most gruesome, bloody or downright horrific manners to their boss, Lou.
Lou was the first Reaper. He was doing a great job until humanity spread too wide for him to continue to work alone. Therefore, he began recruiting others to be Reapers. As the ages changed, the cycle of Reapers did as well.
Lou no longer Reaps but watches the Reapers like the owner of a company. They report to him and bring souls for other possible Reapers.
Working alongside the Reapers are Seers, people who can gaze through the veil between the world of the living and the realm of the dead, and Witches, humans who can utilize Reaper abilities. Both types were visited by Lou because they were stillbirths or infant deaths. Seers lost their physical sight and was granted life and sight into the spiritual realm instead as well as the ability to create weak barriers for short periods of time while Witches grow without a limb or some other physical deformity.
Reapers, when chosen by Lou, appear in a white room. In the room is a man in a red suit with a black tie, slicked back hair and lively blue eyes. He is Lou.
"You have been chosen as the new wave of Reapers." Lou said, smiling slyly. He was in 4 rooms, all identical, all pure white and empty. Before him stood the new Reapers. "Name, age and a quick description of yourself." He held a clipboard in his left hand and an ancient quill between the fingers of his right. "I'm joking." he smirked. "I know who you are and who you think you are. You're hired if you accept." He raised his now empty hands, smiling as 3 engraved tablets rose from the ground.
To the right of Lou, the tablet held a bow and a rifle in an X behind a small pistol.
To the left stood a pumpkin, a skull and a glowing orb of light in a triangle, the skull at the top.
In front of him was a sword, scythe and hammer in a 6-point star.
"Choose your class." he said, lowering his arms from sight.
Luna looked at the man, cautious and afraid. She was about to answer him when he said he was joking. She frowned, not knowing who the guy was or what happened. The last thing she remembered was being offered as a sacrifice to Satan. She put her hand on her chest, barely listening to the man. Then he said something that caught her attention. "Hired? What do you mean?" Before she got an answer, the tablets rose from the ground. When told to choose her class, she immediately went to the magic, touching the pumpkin. She didn't know what to expect but hoped she wasn't about to regret what she was doing.
Shamus began to walk around the room looking at the man in black, trying to register what was happening.
" Wait. Where teh fookin hell am I? And what do you mean a new wave of reapers?"
The man asked him a few questions in which Shamus replied with a "arsewhole". The man then stated that he was joking. Though Shamus shrugged and pulled out his cigarette case and drew a cigarette and lit it. He inhaled deeply as he watched three tablets rise from the floor. He was tempted to say someone thing else but just stared at the man as he made his way over to the pistol, exhaling the smoke. His hand hovered over the pistol and he looked over at the man in black as he inhaled more of his cigarette.
"Who are you? Really?" He asked as puffs of smoke left his mouth.
"... The hell just happened?" Donny looked around this weird place. His memory was fuzzy, and all he could remember reliably was that he just got out of a fight. He thought he was in some sort of hospital, than the guy was talking about reapers or some silliness. Donny was tempted to reach into his pocket and whip out his knife... Which he didn't have. He had nothing in his pockets, sans his cellphone. What was he going to do, chuck it at the guy? No, but Donny still didn't know what was doing on, and he didn't like it.
Soon some tablets appeared before Donny. Carved on them were what looked like some weapons, and this stranger asked him to pick his "Class". "What is this, some sort of RPG?" Donny didn't really expect an answer though and walked up to the table. It's been a while since he played videogames, but he could guess what classes where what from what he saw; bows and guns were ranged classes, whatever that pumpkin and skull was some sort of mage class, and the tablets with the sword, scythe, and hammer was a melee class. Donny took a moment to contemplate why he would need weapons. On instinct he wanted to choose the tablet with the gun, but before he did he thought of something else. "What if I'm about to get thrown into some sort of pit fight? And what if this gun doesn't have bullets? Or even a bow? I don't know how to use a bow. Ah ha, tricky bastards, but you won't get me so easily." Since he didn't know a lick about magic, he ignored the tablet. Donny was never much of a shot anyways, and looked towards the melee weapons. A sword, a scythe, and a hammer. He figured these weapons were suppose to symbolize something.
The sword, as far as Donny thought about it, meant that he'd be extra combat focused. After all, it's hard to use a sword for anything else but killing. The scythe seem kind of stupid to him, since he's heard lots of tales about how horrible scythes were as weapons. You have the sharp end pointed at yourself most of the time, after all. Maybe it was suppose to just be for intimidation factor? Donny than looked at the hammer. Nothing too special about it, looked like a warhammer, or may a stylized carpenter hammer. It's probably heavy and could put nails into wood and a hole into someone's head. If he remembered correctly, these weapons corresponded to your basic melee weapon classes in most fantasy games. Swords were fast but averaged in everything else. Axes were slower than swords but did more damage per hit. Hammers and other blunt weapons ignored armor but were slow or just don't do as much raw damage as the other weapons. Either way, he touched the tablet with the melee weapons on it. If nothing else, it shouldn't be too hard to hit someone or something with the sharp or pointy ends.
"Alright, so I guess I'm a fighter class or something. What are we going to do with these, kill someone? We're killing people aren't we?"
As each of the three of them touched a tablet, Lou smirked. In front of Luna, the tablet dropped to reveal 3 more tablets. In the center was the skull. Under it was carved:
Your strength and concentration is second to none.
To the left was the Pumpkin.
You are fast with your magick and can throw many at once.
To the right was a glowing ball of light.
You give power to your allies and your shield helps them greatly.
The tablet in front of Shamus fell to reveal 6 tablets. From left to right, they had a general picture of the weapon type and the name of the group of ranged weaponry:
Explosive (RPG), Rifle (Hunting Rifle), Pistol (Revolver), Crossbow (One-Handed Crossbow), Bow (Longbow), Sling (Staff-Sling).
The tablet in front of Donny fell and three more rose. In the center of them was the first with a sword. To the right was a large hammer. To the left was a dagger.
Under the sword was written: Your skill is unmatched in the battlefield.
Under the hammer was written: Your strength is unmatched in the battlefield.
Under the dagger was written: Your speed is unmatched in the battlefield.
Luna read the small description under each of the tablet before touching the one with a pumpkin. She looked to Lou as she made her choice. "Tell me what this all means." she said, looking him over. "And what exactly is a sage? And what did you mean by "new wave of reapers" earlier?" It was more of curiosity than of need to know. Although, she thought of the possibility of him talking to others at the same time. She ignored the thought instantly.
Shamus shook his head and stared at the tablets with frustration. More tablets? This is beginning to get rediculous.
"So, not gonna tell me who you are?" He looked up at the man with his eyes squinted, glaring at the man in black. He looked at the different weapons. Explosives, well, he wasn't much of a pyromaniac but he did like watching things go "kaboom" on the news or shows. Stringed weaponry were not even an option so he narrowed it down to the rifle and the pistol. His hand went back and forth between the two undecided.
"Can't I just choose two or am I gonna get taht stupid lo-" He held his tongue and shook his head. He looked back at the weapons as he thought about what his fortes were. He came to the conclusion that he would stick with his first choice as he reached for the revolver.
"Ah, so this is the part where I get to chose my class spec options. Yes, hmm..." Before him was a sword, a hammer, and a knife. Each one had a little description that he didn't really care for. Something describing his future skill set not doubt. Well, he didn't really look at the dagger. Sure he's used to knives, but if he's going to kill stuff might as well as use something better than a short razor. But than again how hard was it to use a sword? Sure he's played around with one before but he was no expert. The hammer was one of his more familiar weapons since he used to work in construction, but he's broken more rocks with a hammer than people, and rocks don't fight back. Wasn't the easiest of choices, so he decided to go with the simplest; he chose the hammer. It's not like he was going to be an instant sword master just because he chose the sword, and speed is useless without force behind it. At least he could get creative with raw strength. "Alright, now what?"
Lou looked to each of them and smiled, "Alright, now we can get to the final step." he smiled at the boys. To Luna he nodded and said, "I expected you to be the hack-and-slash type like one of those psycho bitches. But, then again, I am usually wrong." He looked up at her again as he smirked. "But people change when they die."
In front of Shamus and Donny appeared one more tablet, this one standing alone. "Shamus, you get to choose what type of small gun you want and up to 3 additions." "Donny, you get to choose any type of big weaponry, whether it be a Greatsword or Zwiehander, Warhammer or Battleaxe, Polearm or Lance, the choices are near limitless." After speaking to each of them alone, he said to them both, "And then you also get to choose the specific design. This is your own artistic qualities."
"Huh. My artistic design, eh..." Donny pondered over this for a short while, but he made his decision quickly. He went with the lightest weapon, a nodachi, but "tweaked" it's appearance. It's appearance was that of a long crowbar. The way Donny imagined it, when held with the crook at the top, it's a crowbar. But when the crook was at the bottom, it was functionally a nodachi, and had it's cutting power despite looking like a crowbar. At least that's what Donny had imagined, but either way, it had the light sharpness of a nodachi but the appearance of a crowbar; a very deceptive weapon.
