Ghost Files: The River of Ashes
Ghost Files: The River of Ashes
The city of Ash Grove: born from a legend, steeped in tradition, and--unknown to mere mortals--tied to supernatural forces. Beneath the ancient river flowing through the town and under the streets lies a dark and terrible secret that, if awakened, will put every life in the city at risk. When a strange artifact related to this secret is stolen from the Ash Grove Museum, higher powers must get it back...and to do so, they'll need the help of a number of gifted people. The worlds of demons and humans collide as a struggle to save thousands of lives from annihilation begins!
This RP is based on the anime/manga series Yu Yu Hakusho, but aside from catching a few references here and there, you don't need to be overly familiar with the series to play. Basically, there exist two worlds side by side--the Human world, which we're all familiar with, and the Spirit world, which can technically be further subdivided into the Demon world and some other places we won't get into until later, if at all. Sometimes, beings from one world go to the other and cause trouble--such as man-eating demons. In cases like these, the Spirit World makes use of Spirit Detectives, people with extraordinary abilities who are allowed to pass between the different worlds to handle cases that Spirit World can't interfere with directly.
Our characters will take the roles of those spirit detectives, though they may not hold such titles at the very beginning, or even be aware of their powers. Their mission will be to prevent a mysterious catastrophe related to the city's distant past. Along the way, they'll fight monsters, demons, and who knows what else, and develop their unique spiritual powers.

Ash Grove City
The weekend had reached its peak in Ash Grove, but there was little fun to be had this Saturday afternoon as rain fell in sheets over the city. The clouds had blotted out the sun and sky like ink on a fresh page, and thunder stomped through the blackness like some great beast surveying its jungle home. Most folks with any sense had barricaded themselves in doors, perhaps with a good book or a snug blanket. And yet here they were, atop this building, staring out into the rain.
"There." He pointed, and though the clouds were black and the water came pouring down, none of the others had any trouble seeing. "The Ash Grove Museum. That's the target."
"Good thing you're paying us for this." snorted one of the figures behind him. Smoke flared from its nostrils in the wet air. "This weather bites. I'd bite you otherwise." Another snort. "Still might, if this ain't worth it."
"I quite like this weather, actually." said another, spreading arms wide. Lightning flashed just above them, and the figure laughed.
"We know where we're going now, so can we just go already!?"
"Yes. No point standing around talking. Move out." He swept his arm, slinging droplets of water from his sleeve, and out across the rooftops they went, leaping and dashing with inhuman agility. For, indeed...most of them weren't.
Ash Grove, Daisuke Yamakami's House
Daisuke pounded buttons frantically on his controller, biting his lip in concentration as the boss's health bar went lower and lower. When the phone rang he hardly noticed--until his mother knocked, loudly, on the door at the same time as a great crash of thunder shook the room. He nearly jumped out of his skin, dropping the controller, and the boss scored a critical hit that took the last of his health points.
"Arrrrgh! Those guys better have a good excuse!" he said, reaching for the phone. The look his mother gave him told him already who it was--she would never stop him from doing what he did, but she always got that worried look when the guys called about something.
"What ya want!?" he snapped into the phone.
"Bro!" came a frantic voice from the other end. "We're out under the bridge, on the east side of the river!"
"Near the old factory? The hell're you doin' out there in this kinda weather?" Cradling the phone between his chin and his shoulder, Daichi picked up his controller and desperately tried to recover his lost progress.
"Some of us was just hangin' out at the convenience store where Yamamoto works, and these dudes from Central High rolled in--"
"Central? I thought I whooped those punks two weeks ago!"
"Yeah well, this time they came prepared to get payback, bro! The other guys are out here with me and we're gettin' our asses handed to us!"
"Dammit, I'll be there! Stay low!"
Throwing his controller to the ground, game forgotten, Daisuke stood up and threw on a gray hooded sweatshirt over his light blue shirt, pulling the hood up and pulling the drawstrings before he put on his black school uniform jacket. Then he was out the door, into the rain, running for all he was worth.
Daisuke Yamakami, In the Streets
Daisuke pulled his hood closer as he ran, hardly feeling the wet and cold eat through the cloth of his jacket and into his hoodie. He was too focused on his friends, who at this moment were probably getting the snot beaten out of them without him. Because of him. From the time his father had died, he'd sworn he would be someone who protected others, who fought against the bullies and the jerks of the world. But somehow along the way, he'd practically become a gang leader--the boys at school followed him, practically worshiped him, and he felt responsible for each and every one of them. When they did something stupid, or pissed off the wrong people, or got themselves into trouble, here he was racing to their rescue. And yet for every time he knocked out some high school thug, or their older brother, or a gang member, that was just someone else who would come back for revenge. But he never tired of it. The constant fight that would have worn anyone else down, he fought on. Because he'd sworn to his dad, before he left.
He rounded a corner, and a sudden impact knocked him to the street. Whoever he'd hit was the first up, babbling something he hardly heard; it was a girl, and from the way she talked she didn't seem...quite all there. But she helped him up, and Daisuke managed a hurried thanks before the girl ran off. Daisuke watched her for a moment, still dazed from the fall, before shaking his head. He had to get to the guys, they were...they were under the bridge. That was weird. The girl, she'd run off in the same direction...
He shook his head again. He had to hurry, before she got involved in it too! He took off again, splashing through puddles, the spraying water soaking his socks and shoes through.
Soon enough, he came to the bridge that spanned the river from east side to west. He could already hear yells and the thump and thud of a brawl. Where was the girl? Where had she gone? No time, he had to get to the guys! He practically leaped across the road to the side walk on the bridge levee, and from there slid down through the wet grass towards the river bank. His eyes widened as he took in the scene.
The Central guys were wearing their uniforms too, despite it being the weekend--even though most delinquents probably hated school, the clothes gave them a sense of unity, made them feel part of the group. It also made it easy to separate them from the others they were fighting, their blue jackets and pants standing out even in the darkness and the rain. Lightning flashed in the sky high above, and reflected bright and white off metal. Baseball bats, the assholes had brought bats! One of them raised the weapon over a downed boy, who could barely raise a hand to ward off the blow...
Daisuke hit him, putting three full strides behind his fist before it crashed into the other youth's jaw. The full power blow knocked the other boy clear off his feet, and he hit the mud with a splash.
"B-Bro!" said the other kid, looking up at his savior. "Guys, the boss is here!" At his shout, all the fighting stopped, and the brawlers turned--half looking on in adoration, the others glaring in hatred.
"That's him, that's the guy who made a buncha fools outta us last time!"
"Get 'im! Kill 'im!"
There was a mad rush. Again lightning flash, and thunder rumbled, but Daisuke's roar managed to drown out even that.
"Come on, you buncha pissants!" He raised his fists, clenching them tight, snarling with those big teeth of his. "I'll knock the hide right off your stupid faces!"
Though the other boys couldn't see it, as his anger surged a blue glow began to outline Daisuke's body...
