Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Nobody really expected any threat to arise from what was left of Eastern Europe after the third world war. Even less expected was the new banner that these tattered nations were continuing to fight under: the hammer and sickle. A new soviet union had arisen, much to the shock of the rest of the world. It spread like some form of virus, gaining rapid support from parts of Russia and all of Communist China. Before anybody knew it, nearly half the world was fighting on behalf of Communism.
Backed by the finances of China, the movement was soon frighteningly well trained and equipped. The technological jumps of the recent world war were put to use, and a plethora of new engines of war were soon rumbling across the battlefield.
Numerically, the New-SSR is superior. They stand poised to bend the entire free world to their vision, if they are not stopped. A few countries have come to the forefront of the battle against them, however.
As far as tech goes, it's a bit futuristic though nothing crazy. Yes, there are mechs, no, they aren't gundams. Think the ones from Mechwarrior, then make them somewhat more primitive. Some of these things are basically bunkers on tank treads, legs are still a relatively new sight on the battlefield.
Armor has progressed to where even relatively normal looking clothing can be bulletproofed to an extent, with silksteel fibres being woven in. Of course it's no match for suits of heavy armor, which can stand up to barrages of machine gun fire and walk away unscathed. Given the cost of such suits though, they are rarely used. Also, a glass/metal alloy has been developed that allows bulletproof glass to be much thinner than before, allowing for better visibility while keeping faces protected.
We don't have energy weapons yet beyond what exists in the real world.
The United States of Canadaka
The USA faced a complete economic collapse when their military industrial complex became too large to sustain itself, leading to a financial crash that wound up shattering the country and bringing the third world war to a close. The Northern states (Everything North of and including Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia) joined with Canada while the south took the chance to rise up and stand apart.
The South took this chance to finally "Rise again" but only succeeded in completely dissolving into a wartorn region of walled city-states, tribes and despotic petty warlords. They aren't unified enough to manage any sort of coordinated strike outside their territory, so instead they have turned their not-inconsiderable firepower on each other, struggling for dominance.
The European Union
Though weakened considerably after the loss of much of Eastern Europe (Everything east of Germany, Austria and Italy) to the Red menace, Europe remains a strong presence. In an effort to give the people heroes and boost national pride and Morale, England began reinstating Knights as warriors instead of simply a title. This led to many imitations across the EU, from the Greek Hoplites (Highly trained snipers) to the Berserkers from the Nordic countries (a Mech company).
There are other free countries yet, these are simply the biggest players. If you want to be from another country, or a refugee / freedom fighter from an NSSR country, let me know. It'll probably be fine, though.
Numbers cannot be relied on to defeat this foe. Instead, the free countries have had to get a little more creative. Most had worked on some form of Super Soldier program in the past during at least one of the World Wars. Countless procedures were tried and discarded in an attempt to make warriors who were faster, stronger, and more resilient than their kin. Some used genetic modification. Some used extensive cybernetics and actually produced cyborgs. Stranger, more exotic methods were also experimented with.
The leaders of the Free World decided that the greatest successes of these programs should be put into a team. Thus was born Chimera, a small core of the best Super Soldiers the free world has to offer.
Your country needs you. The fate of freedom is in your hands. Do you have what it takes to grasp the reigns of fate and steer the course?
Every red heart shines toward the Red Sun. Russia stands stronger than it has in some time, its economy having been kickstarted with aid from China and the discovery of some rather rich oil fields. The ability to properly finance their military, which is rather large in size, makes them formidable foes.
Possessing more population than any other single country and backed by vast wealth, China is a thing to be feared from a military perspective. They have the numbers to be well represented in all pursuits, be they naval, ground based or aerial. They have been instrumental in the rise of the NSSR, providing the financial backbone for a huge amount of research and development, as well as equipping soldiers.
Cornered as they were by China, Japan was forced to bow to their will or risk destruction. The Crown Prince has gone into hiding though, and is rumoured to be behind several groups of revolutionaries fighting for the liberation of his country.
At present though, Japan is providing a key technological edge to the NSSR, and is leading the way in the development of walking tanks, aka mechs.
Please send me your character sheets and I will add them to the opening post here. Don't post them in the OOC thread yourself lest you incur my wrath.

Weapons: [Please keep it to one or two primary ones, and remember that your character can only carry so much bulk]
Vehicle: [What your character uses to get around / for mobile combat. Could be a mech, could be some sort of tank or weaponized car- something that fits where the character is from.]

Username: Primal Conundrum
Name: Malus Grimmig
Personality: Career soldier. Malus joined the army at 17 with falsified papers, and has been a warrior for the past 24 years. He served at the end of the third world war, and has a personality clad in an iron shell. He'll usually follow orders to the best of his abilities, though he has a horrible habit of getting lippy if he thinks he's been given what he considers to be a stupid order. It doesn't help that he apparently has a bit of a temper on him, even if it does take a while to set him off.
Armor: Mark V Belagerung. Immensely heavy to the point where few unmodified humans could function in it. For that, it provides massive protection and a number of tactical functions such as a heads-up display, built in radio, and a ladar rangefinder.
Weapons: Kriegaxt Heavy Assault Rifle: Machine gun / grenade launcher combo that normally runs off a magazine, but has a breech load for specialty ammunition. Also works well as a blunt weapon.
L-51 Rattlesnake: An oversized pistol of Confederate make. Effectively a sawed-off shotgun with an awkward grip.
Vehicle: An Eisenzurück mech, also known as a 'war crab' informally. Armed with a heavy gatling gun, a minigun, several missile arrays and an armor-piercing high caliber rifle, Malus frequently forgoes those and simply charges into melee, letting the heavily armored mass of the mech crush what gets in his way. The Eisenzurück model trades off movement speed for its considerable armor, which when paired with its heavily sloped surfaces makes it hard to damage with gunfire. It lacks jumpjets completely, not being remotely close to light enough to use such things. It is however an amphibious machine, its wide hull containing air storage and some air scrubbers that can keep the air breathable for a long period of time. The last tool of note that it has is a rather high-powered winch on the front.
Background: Malus joined the German army at 17 with falsified papers, and has served dutifully since. Now, at the age of 41, he's wound up in special ops. He never went in for any sort of command position, his temper often putting him at odds with his superiors and keeping him smack in the middle of combat, which is where he'd be if he had a choice anyway.
He was recently involved in a secret project, run out of the underground of Berlin used by the Nazis. It seems that at least one of the WWII Nazi 'Super Soldier' projects had turned up if not actual results, some very interesting leads. These were worked on, developed, and used on Malus.
As a result, he has the stamina needed to move for extended periods in his immensely heavy armor. He also has a number of hookups into his neural system, and as a result can function in complete harmony with his suit's systems.
He is also strong to the point of it being dangerous to himself. In a test, he once tore the hatch off of a tank, breaking his arm and pulling countless muscles in the process. He is capable of feats of strength that will injure him horribly, though they usually accomplish the task first.
The rules are just pretty much your standard ones, which really all boil down to "don't be a dick". No godmodding, that kind of thing. Gore and violence is 100% acceptable, given that it's a war RP.
