THE REAPER CODEX
The real world (a.k.a. the mortal plane or mortal realm) is the modern world, in which human beings rule supreme. The spirit world, (a.k.a Heaven or the Afterlife), is a world beyond the mortal world, where ethereal beings live in peace. Between these two worlds lies a grand space, known as the Interworld, the home of the Reapers. Between each of these planes, great portals exist to link them together, and provide access for those able to cross over. There are three portals in all. One portal connects the real world to the spirit world, another connects the real world to the Interworld, and yet another connects the Interworld to the spirit world. These portals can only be opened by Reapers, as they have access to special items that can ‘unlock’ them.
Similarly to Heaven, there is believed to be a third plane, known as Hell, though this has never been explained. Technically, there are four planes that exist in the world, though the general, misguided belief amongst humans is that there are only three; Earth, Heaven and Hell. If there is believed to be a fourth, it is known to the humans as Purgatory, or Limbo.
REAPERS, SOULS AND THE DUTY OF THE GRIM
Once they reach eighteen, Reaper candidates are sought out by higher members of the corp. Candidates will have displayed certain abilities throughout their adolescence, such as the perception of spirits and entities, or superhuman feats of strength or speed. Known ‘abilities’ that each Reaper possesses include enhanced strength, agility, quicker reflexes, and a much higher damage threshold than normal humans.
A Reaper’s job is to transfer the souls of the dead to the spirit world. It is said that the spirits who are not deemed worthy enough to be granted access to Heaven simply become extinguished after their body has died. Spirits that are deemed worthy must therefore wait for a Reaper to be able to move on. They are not tied to their body, and can wander freely around the material plane. Some spirits may refuse the help of a Reaper, as they have unfinished business to attend to in the mortal world, and though they cannot directly touch or interact with the material world, their spiritual energy may sometimes allow them to perform certain acts. Reapers cannot force a soul to abandon the real world, and lore holds that the first evil spirit was created by a Reaper who forced a soul to depart against its will. If a Reaper’s services are refused, that Reaper will simply return some other day, even hundreds of years later, when that soul is finally ready to depart. Pure spirits, or at least, those that are trapped in the real world, cannot access the spirit world on their own – this is precisely why Reapers exist. Releasing a spirit can be done a number of ways, though Reapers are the only beings able to do this.
Souls that stay in the material world on their own terms run the risk of being tracked down by beings other than Reapers, as evil spirits can sometimes find a way through the portal connecting the spirit world to the mortal world. Evil spirits often have no sense or rational thought, and simply wish to consume or destroy the spiritual energy of these pure spirits. Reapers are also the only beings that can touch or interact with spirits just as they could with a normal, living thing. They are also the only beings able to release good spirits and demolish bad spirits. Evil spirits and good spirits can fight each other, but they cannot touch, hurt or otherwise interact with humans.
When Reapers are not on duty, they are fighting hoards of evil spirits. Sometimes evil spirits will attempt to invade parts of the spirit world, where the pure spirits reside, and so the Reapers will band in force to eliminate the threat. The same goes for any stray, evil spirits found in the mortal world; they will be sought out and extinguished.
Spiritual energy cannot be sensed by normal humans, as they are already unaware of the spirit world and anything directly linked to it. To a Reaper, spiritual energy can be felt and sensed in either world, and every existing spirit gives off a certain amount of energy simply by being ‘alive’. The level of energy that they exert depends on their tier and the power they possess. The more powerful they are, the more noticeable their presence is to a Reaper, and any abilities they use will create ‘spikes’ in the energy. Not all spirits are evil, however each of the creatures listed below are, and very rarely will there be a spirit that resembles one of these species but retains its original purity that good spirits possess. All spirits listed were once pure and human, but were twisted into different shapes and forms by evil. Reapers help protect pure, stranded spirits from this same taint.
The Reaper hierarchy and class structure is similar to the modern world’s military structure (in the USA). Standard soldiers are rookies – the youngest and most inexperienced of all classes. They are the lowest in the chain of command, and are subject to the control of every class above them. Rookie’s that do not pass on to become SpecialistsThe chain of command is as follows, from highest to lowest;
TIERS AND THE CLASSIFICATION OF SPIRITS
The strength of each encountered spirit is measured through a set of guidelines which sorts them into a particular rank. This rank is based on the severity of the physical and mental strength of each spirit and the amount of spiritual energy that they exert in both the spiritual and material planes. There are 6 tiers in total, ranging from least to most powerful. Please note: Some species of spirit are inherently part of one particular tier, however it has been known for some individual spirits of the same species to be sorted into tiers that are higher or lower than the standard for that species. These are known as anomalies, and will occasionally pop up in either world.
Tier 1: Least Threatening
Tier 2: Threatening
Tier 3: Dangerous
Tier 4: Highly Dangerous
Tier 5: Extremely Dangerous
Tier 6: Impossible
[Avoid direct confrontation]
WEAPONS AND ESSENCE
Reapers use a variety of different weapons - not just the classic scythe. In fact, modern weaponry is sometimes used, such as pistols and rifles. From 'Specialist' onward, Reapers are able to choose and personalize their own weapons and the type of essence they will be infused with – rookies only get to choose between a standard sword (either a katana or longsword) or a handgun or rifle. Reapers can have more than one weapon, and will often have some kind of sidearm apart from their main.
Essence is a form of spiritual energy that is used to make runes. Runes are symbols and markings which contain the essence and funnel it through a Reaper’s weapon of choice. Weapons without any form of essence are useless against spirits – they cannot wound or weaken evil spirits and cannot be used to release good ones (if a Reaper decides to use their weapon this way). Weapons can range from katanas, to daggers, to staffs, to mini guns. If a part of it can be inscribed, it can be used by a Reaper.
Types of essence generally revolve around the elements; e.g. fire, water, nature, air, though they can also have other effects, such as those whose runes can hold electrical charges. Instead of runes, some weapons may be inset with gems or polished stones which store a certain amount of essence within them. After a certain amount of essence has been expelled from a weapon it will need to be refilled – meaning that runes will fade from a weapon after extended use, and will need to be retraced. Gems or stones will need to be filled again.

I put the chain of command/hierarchy thing in just for general know how. I made up a few of my own classes to sort of fit with the theme, and tried not to follow the modern day structure too much, such as what they use in the US and such. Our team would all be Specialists, with the leader being an Observer, which I guess is similar to a commander. If that’s alright?
If you want to add anything at all just let me know and I’ll put it in, or write up something and I’ll copy paste it somewhere :) Now I need to do my characters..
Please don’t hesitate to let me know if anything seems wrong/is out of place/doesn’t make sense.
For the title I was thinking A Grim Tale or something, I really don't know currently.
