Zombies are simply the reanimated corpses of beings with the soul still in tact. There are a variety of beings that can be turned into zombies, such as Humans, Nekos, Silvers, Genies and Rhornaqubh. Kitsunes, Observers, Ghosts and Ghost Royalty are some of the races that cannot be zombified. Zombies can only be created by magical means, such as curses or necromancy. The strength of the magic used and the amount of time the being has been dead effects the amount in which the Zombie will rot. Zombies can only be re-killed by either cutting off the magic source that reanimates them or by absolutely destroying the head.
When a dead being becomes a Zombie, there strength is greatly increased, and usually they can still have the same abilities they harbored when they were alive. However there are many downsides to being a zombie. The fact that they often fall apart can potentially be beneficial, since they can just reattatch any fallen limbs later...but usually it's just inconvinent. Another negative trait is that zombies cannot gain any abilities they didn't have when they were alive; if a zombie didn't know magic before they died, they can't learn it after they are reanimated. Zombies also are usually at the mercy of Necromancers and other beings that specialize in magic of the dead, as they can be controlled and forced into enslavement.
For the most part, Zombies have free will, but all Zombies are subject to a ravenous instinct to eat the living, or more specifically a specified part of the living. Most commonly Zombies feast on brains, though approximately 40% of the Zombie population does specialize in eating other body parts such as the intestines, stomach, liver, eyeballs, asophogus, etc. etc. If the zombie is not well nourished with whatever body part it requires, it will succumb to it's instincts and act more animalistic. However, if a Zombie has a steady diet, they can have as much self control and consciousness as any other being.
Zombies don't really have much of a culture, as they are, in a sense, an artificial race, created by other races and magic. Obviously, being dead and all, Zombies cannot reproduce, unless the magic used on them enables them to, which is rare and overall pretty strange.
