The Gaia are a very rare race that exist in a celestia realm nestled right outside our universe. There are only 285 in existance, and only a small fraction can be found in the universe of TJA. While outside thier celestial home, they are nearly impossible to kill, but it can be done. There is no definative way to actually kill a Gaia, and the method it takes in which to end one's life is infinately random. Once killed, the Gaia returns to it's natural spiritual form and is instantly returned to the celestial realm. The spirit of a Gaia can never be killed. Eventually, the spirit will be reincarnated on Earth (or possibly elsewhere in this or another universe), but the form in which the Gaia takes or how much it remembers is completely random. In case you haven't noticed, a shit ton about this race is based on ramdomness.
On Earth, Gaia's often learn quickly to live in fear of capture. Fortunately little is known about Gaia and few even know of thier existance, but those who do are often aware of the immense potential power of the Gaia race. You see, Gaia possess the essence of life itself, and are in a sense life-givers. Obviously they have the ability to give life to other beings around them, but also have proven to provide other life essences, such as youth, energy, chakra, etc. etc. This being said, Gaia have a massive amount of untapped power. Seeing as 98% of Gaia are peaceful, they are often seen as essentially "batteries" for the powers of stronger creatures, and Gaia often find themselves hunted by power hungry individuals. It has also been demonstrated that Gaia exhibit a range of other, simpler powers such as shapeshifting, control of the elements, telepathy, and others that have yet to be recorded.
Reproduction is impossible on the celestial realm. However, Gaia on Earth can reproduce. However, Gaia that maintain thier memories know that reproduction is the reason for the Gaia's pending extinction. You see, all Gaia are female, and when a Gaia gives birth, it passes on the "spark" to it's offspring. The child then has a random amount of the life-giving powers and the Gaia becomes mortal, though still ages slower than normal humans. Whether the offspring is a Gaia or simply a demi-Gaia is completely random, but even if they end up being a Gaia, they will not be able to access thier full powers until after they ascend to the celestial realm and preform thier first renicarnation. If they remain a demi-Gaia, they do not ascend to the celestial realm after death. And only the first child of a Gaia can become a Gaia or demi-Gaia; after the Gaia is mortal, all other offspring will be whatever the other parent is.
The interesting thing about Gaia reproduction is that it requires very minimal physical interaction. While sexual acts are usually required, this strange attribute makes it possible for Gaia to mate with other females. Gaia can mate with pretty much every species, even a few that normally cannot reproduce, but a Gaia cannot reproduce with thier own kind.
