I know little of mathematics, but I'm pretty sure multiplication and subtraction are not good bedfellows. You could just jack up the power of the attack equation considerably, or perhaps just times the end number by 10 or something.

They can. Though the simpler you make it the easier the calculations will be. Could just have a flat all the attack value added together = side of attacking die roll minus all the defense value of defenders = side of defending die roll = casualties.
Might need some balancing if the numbers get weird.
