In that situation, what I would propose would be
500d4 - 200d5
I think she means adding all the defense of one side and the attack of the other into two numbers, then rolling that die.
Like, 500 Knights with 4 Attack charge 200 Pikemen with 5 Defense:
500 x 4 = 2000, so 1d2000
200 x 5 = 1000, so 1d1000
Subtract results, bam, you got causulties.
Seems a little simplistic to me, but...

Example Stats for a Hoplite (Proposed)
Attack: 6
Defense: 7
Manuever: 1
Discipline: 7
The key is determining exactly the scale. Perhaps if we set '10' as the best possible number for any stat, then we could essentially expand that outward from there. Hoplites were some of the most disciplined soldiers in history and they were a nearly unbreakable defensive force, but their lack of mobility was their weak point - if someone got into the flanks or otherwise got past the first layer of sheild wall into the main body, they were simply unable to redirect to respond to that intrusion, hence the shitty manuever

That would be the basline hoplite, but for Say Sparta or Macedon they might make their UU a better version of the hoplite with better discpline
A Unique Unit is just inherently better - if its two extra points or so, then no subtractios nessesary

Sounds good.
Should we just go with fairly basic, non-unique, non-regional units to start ('Swordsmen' 'Spearmen' 'Archer' 'Slinger' 'Light Cavalry' 'Heavy Cavalry' 'Horse Archer')
?

Mkay.
Well, then we need to design the stats for them.
Oh!
I just realized another thing the stat system allows: I always mentioned you could like 'research' to improve you units, but never gave a mechanism for it.
It would be expensive, but perhaps you could research to give +1 to attack or defense (as those are the equipment based ones) to certain units for yourself (it would also effect all units of that type already owned by you)

I call the less-numerous but superior force of unique troops that will be thrown into the mock battle to better test number crunching!
