If I may suggest something that may help along.
Having a more controlled amount of players at the start and expand to taste. This applies to tabletop, forum RP and parties, too many people makes it hard to manage and then "s**t hits the fan" as the saying goes. If initial numbers are working well, it's easier to add more than to trim down.
Of course, as you mentioned, having a tight "release schedule" also helps keep the "hype" in place and helps with character creation, updates and to flow into the IC more smoothly.
