Phase 4, Post A
"But it's certain now," Alex mumbled to the group, rubbing his temples, "The assassins are with us, we can't just ignore that. They almost killed you." He was right and the entire group felt the weight of death lingering over them, bearing them down. Tensions were running high, with the group undoubtedly becoming increasingly filled with distrust for one another. You could see it in their faces, the panic brewing beneath facades of calm. Shifting eyes, accusatory glances, body language all reading discomfort that instilled the primal urge of self preservation, the want and desire to run, separate and hope to survive like in all of the previous hunger games.
"We can't let them win." Nyra hissed, her face twisting in a scowl. "We can't let them separate us, we can't let them break our spirit. We have a chance to get out of this."
"Do you really believe it?" Cayden asked, Bellatrix beside him, "That we will get out of here?" Nyra nodded, her lips tight and knuckles clenched.
"It's going to be hard to move," Eviat commented, his hand on Braum's shoulder, "This guy isn't going to cooperate very well." Eviat was only stating the obvious, for it seemed that only Robin's presence would calm the large man as he thrashed against his bonds. Abigale had went about trying to comfort him while the venom ran his course, trading her attention between him and Darius. He was a bit worse for wear, his nose was broken, a large gash that split from the corner of his eyebrow down to his cheek. It was hard for him to stand up straight, and after some gentle examinations Daniel determined that at least two of his ribs were broken from the assault.
"Did you see Darius?" Zephyr asked, his brow set with determination, "Did you see who hit you." But the bronze-skinned man shook his head, a sharp inhale as Abigale reset his broken nose.
"Blind-sided me. I was running looking for Yona, and just got nailed in the face." The group was disappointed that he hadn't seen anything, and it seemed that Braum was their only hope, whenever he came out of the hallucinations of the venom. "We can't make any decisions until we talk to Braum." Yondaime said.
"Where were you thinking Ny-Katniss." Bellatrix said twirling a lock of her hair in her fingers. "To look for Aiden. We're not in the best shape right now, but we can't stay here. This place is going to go up in flames soon." Nyra looked at Zephyr for answers, she wasn't be best as vocalizing her thoughts, besides he was the speaker, the one with the gift of gab.
"We talked about it, we think Aiden's from District 7." Zephyr said, and the rest of the group started to discuss the possibilities.
"Wasn't Alyssa from District 7?" Robin called, though she didn't leave her post next to Braum. "I think so." Brilliant added. He and Jason seemed to be over their slight rivalry, or rather Brilliant seemed to trust him more despite the events that were unfolding, so Jason spoke next. "Where would his district take him?"
"We think he's in the Redwoods, District 7 does a lot of lumber work." Zephyr observed.
"Well there's woods around the Cornucopia too, he could just as easily be there. And there's trees all over the place. What makes you so sure he's in the Redwoods?" Andrea asked a bit uncertain. Cayden agreed, but it was Carl who finally quelled the argument.
"We were all over those woods by the Cornucopia. We didn't see Aiden or any signs that he's been through there."
"I'd stay near water personally. The Redwoods are slightly uphill, less likely to have water." Yondaime added, "You need water to survive, for all we know he went downstream."
"No- we're sure he's in the Redwoods, he's got to be." Zephyr said with a tone of finality. "That's where we need to go. Everyone stays close and we move as quickly as we can." There didn't seem to be any more objections, but the tension only seemed to grow.
"I trust in Peeta and Katniss, everyone else should too. Let's figure this out and get going." Bae Liev spat, breaking the uncertain silence that had descended on them.
Traveling was rough. They had to stop frequently to allow Darius rest, and Braum didn't make it easy. More than once he would nearly escape and run off into the unknown causing a slight chaos in the group momentarily, but they'd managed to keep him under control after his second attempt. The heat didn't let up either, and more than once they heard the shrill cries of the Muttations back towards the direction of the cooling molten rock. The ash finally stopped falling around them by mid-afternoon and the heat let up shortly thereafter. They were grateful, and they had managed to find a small pond to gather some more water though they didn't have the time to boil it down and they lacked the tools. Perhaps an hour before dusk though, the sight of the Redwoods came into view.
They were breath-taking and innocuous save for their substantial height. The ochre bark was thick and full of vibrant life, the trunks looming overhead with thick canopies enveloped in lush green leaves. The area had an earthy scent, dead leaves thick on the forest floor and slightly moist and their footsteps sank slightly with each step they took. The sunlight filtered through the leaves sending rays of golden sunshine beaming down to the ground, had it not been for the ominous reality that this was a battleground, it could almost be considered beautiful. Eviat and Yondaime, being some of the strongest still escorted Braum while Daniel and Alex helped Darius off and on when he needed it.
The time finally came when they needed rest. The took their shelter at the base of one of the large trees, they'd been searching for nearly an hour and the night was quickly descending around them.
"I don't think he's here." Rochelle said biting her lower lip. None of them had wanted to admit it, but it appeared as though the wrong decision had been made. Nyra let her head fall back and hit against the tree rather hard, closing her eyes and wiping the sweat from her forehead. "This arena's really big, I don't think we'll find him. Cordelia's probably already sending something nasty after him."
Bae Liev's eyes were pointed skyward, as though she were searching for answers in the skies, partly shielded by the thick canopies. "Aiden!" She screamed, the group looking at her in surprise. She shrugged. "We've been too quiet. He doesn't know we're looking for him, if he knew maybe he'd come out."
"Yeah but we don't exactly want to advertise our location either." Carl said, shushing her as she called out for Aiden again. There was a slight yelp that drew the groups attention and they found Abigale, whose right leg was submerged in the ground to the upper thigh.
"What happened?" Daniel asked running over and offering his arm for her to grab so he could lift her out. "I don't know I just sank." She answered as he pulled her upward, freeing her from the ground. Alex's eyes darted through the woods and it was only then the group realized just how quiet it was around them.
"We should leave, the kid's not here." Alex hissed, gripping a handful of his hair. "What's that noise?" He asked in a hurried voice and the group listened. There was a hissing sound but they couldn't quite place it. Nyra and Bellatrix were the only two sitting down, and they discovered the source first.
"Oh my god, it's underneath us!" Bellatrix screamed, and everyone was on their feet. "Let's get out of here!" Zephyr screamed and the group started running. Alex drew his large hunting knife he'd grabbed from the Cornucopia, his eyes aimed towards the ground. Then it happened.
A hand, webbed between long, crooked fingers with sharp, pointed nails reached up through the leaves, grabbing Eviat around the ankle, causing him to trip face fist. "Something's got me!" He screamed and flipped around on his back. Then he saw it emerge from the ground. It's features were flat mostly, nostrils two diagonal slits with grayed, spotted flesh. The smell was atrocious, like rotting flesh that was full of bloat from being in the water far too long. The creature used him to pull itself from the ground and that's when he saw at the waist were not legs but a long tail- like that of a snake. He reeled his free leg back and kicked the beast in the face, freeing himself and scrambling to his feet, and watched as a spear pierced the creature through the neck, Carl plucking the weapon as he ran up.
"Alex wait!" Abigale called, running after the panicked boy. Brilliant was a fast runner, so he caught up, grabbing Alex by the shoulder but the man spun around quickly. "You won't kill me!" He screamed, plunging the knife deep into Brilliant's belly. The boy's eyes widened in shock, and as Alex withdrew the blade he feel to his knees clutching the wound and Alex kept running.
"Brilliant!" Jason screamed, running up to aide his friend from one of the slithering creatures that was emerging from the ground, growing nearer and nearer to the wounded boy. An arrow stuck into the side of the creature but it kept pursuing and once it wrapped its arms around the boy, the pair of them disappeared into the damp leaves- a cannon sounded not long after. The group scrambled, Darius wounded but running for his life and urging the others forward. Alex scurried away from the group, his screams echoing throughout the woods as he fell into one of the sink holes, three of the horrid muttattions surrounding him and pulling him under, into their clutches. Another Cannon sounded.
"I know you're tired, keep running Katniss." Zephyr said to Nyra, pulling her by the arm behind her but to his horror she tripped and he lost his grasp. He watched in horror as two muttattions clawed their way up through the ground, one wrapping its webbed fingers around Nyra's leg, he withdrew the sword he took from Lyme and prepared to slash but arrows found the muttattions, one in the shoulder and the other a clean shot to the head. He slashed on the remaining one, and pulled Nyra back to her feet, both confused about where the arrow came from- then they heard it.
"Up here!" The group was shocked at the sound of a foreign voice, and when their eyes shifted upward, they saw a rope ladder falling down from one of the higher branches of a tree, Aiden perched on the thick limb with a bow poised, ready to cover them. They didn't ask questions, one by one climbing up the ladder as quick as they could, Darius insisting all go before him since he would be the slowest up. The boy was a mediocre shot at best, but he provided them enough cover to all make it safely up into the tree.
"Come on." Aiden said sternly, he was visibly shaken but he yanked the ladder up the branch and led them into a large hollow, big enough in the large tree to accommodate them all. "Those things only come out at night. They can't climb, we're okay up here. Why are you here?" He asked, his voice skeptical. He seemed to realize that they could possibly be hunting him down and his grip tightened on his bow. The group still seemed unable to process the events that had just transpired so they all looked to Nyra and she took the cue to speak. "Haymitch told us to find you- more or less. We need to know why." Aiden relaxed slightly but he was still on edge as he looked at their faces one by one- his eyes shifting out to the opening in the hollow where in the night sky, for they were far enough up to see the top of the dome quite clearly- the faces of dead tributes began to glean on the screen.
"If Haymitch sent you to find me- then you guys must be in a lot of trouble."

You have found Aiden Talc. You may choose to utilize his advantage against the assassins now, or you may wait for your next lynch (Keep in mind Katniss and Peeta are safe next assassins' phase). I stopped there for dramatic effect, but I will reveal his perk in the thread if you vote for it.
Please bold your lynch votes.
Screw you all who said river I WAS RIGHT!
