†Storm's Brewing†
Phase 2, Post B
The group grew silent, most staring into the crackling embers of the fire causing the orange lights to dance across their eyes. They all knew it was inevitable, that eventually death would come to them and with both Yondaime's attack and Deidre's death that reality was growing ever closer to them. Perhaps that was the cruelest part of this year's games, Cordelia had given them hope. Naive, wishful hope. Eviat frowned, "So what do we do?" Five words was all it took to make everyone's blood run cold. Wasn't this what the hunger games was for? Wasn't death looming over them? They had all been prepared to kill but when it came down to it, were any of them truly ready? "I think the only fair way is to vote." Bellatrix said after a long silence, the only one willing to speak on the subject they were all thinking about.
"And have it be a popularity contest?" Fortuna hissed back, "How fair is that, to leave someone else's life to a vote."
"It's not, but it's life. It's us or them, if we don't kill them, they'll kill us." Bellatrix argued, her voice louder now so that several hushed her quietly, all casting cursory glances into the fading light around them. The girl groaned and plopped against the tree shaking her head. But even the hushing of the group did little to quell the argument. Some agreed with Bellatrix, others with Fortuna and others had different opinions entirely. All it did was create a chaos in what little structure the group had managed to form. Andrea found her way back over to Yondaime while the group argued amongst itself. Robin had not left his side since he'd arrived wounded and had been treating him to the best of her ability- though it wasn't much. Andrea nodded to Robin, silently asking for some privacy. She seemed reluctant to leave but Yondaime nodded his agreement and Andrea took a seat beside him. She looked over at Alex, who lay unconscious on a sleeping bag, his features wracked with sweat and his skin ashen and pale. She sighed heavily and looked at him, he was in rough shape and wasn't taking part of the debate. The look they shared seemed to be an apology from one to the other. Andrea sorry for her storming away from him and Yondaime's features wracked with the guilt of losing Deidre. "It's my fault," He whispered looking away. "No-" She started grabbing his hand. "You don't start blaming yourself. You blame Cordelia." He seemed comforted by this, but only slightly, the pain and regret that once filled his face turning stoney and bitter. "You're right." He said barely above a whisper squeezing her hand back. He grimaced at the pain and Robin kept passing curious gazes their way, apparently growing somewhat impatient.
Braum had been left to guard the two 'prisoners' Abigail and Jason, and he didn't seem very interested in the debate. He seemed almost bemused with it all, as though he thought the whole thing unimportant and pointless- or perhaps he truly wasn't listening, one couldn't be sure. Abigail had been studying their newest addition quite intently, though she was in no position to hold any grudges or bitterness towards him. If only Alex could wake up, he could vouch for her, whatever good it would do. The turn in the conversation made her grow tense with anxiety, the feeling of butterflies in her stomach that she would be executed was enough to nearly make her faint. She swallowed hard, looking up to meet Karim's gaze who looked away promptly as though ashamed to have been looking at her. So that's what she was then? A shame? She looked back over at Jason and could tell he had feelings similar to her own. "Don't worry." She said with a crooked smile. He seemed to be seeing her for the first time, his eyes washed over her face as if committing it to memory.
"I'm tied up and nobody will listen to me, you're tied up too and nobody will listen to you and you're telling me not to worry." He said letting his head fall back against the tree. "They're going to kill us." He said flatly, almost as if he didn't recognize his own voice. Abigail shook her head, "They wont, not you at least, you were here the whole time."
"I don't think we should kill anyone." Brilliant said hesitantly. He was one of the youngest tributes in the group and so he had waiting until asked before he gave his opinion. Daniel shrugged when it came time for him, "I'm not saying we shouldn't fight for our lives here, but we can't be sure anyone is guilty. We just don't know."
"We need to be better organized." Bae Liev added, "We can't let ourselves get sloppy again, sending people out into the unknown, no accountability- no protection. There's two assassins that we know of, if we can just keep an eye on each other they're bound to make a mistake and we'll catch them."
"Or we can just kill them- maybe make a mistake, better safe than sorry," Bellatrix spat and Carl had to put his hand on her shoulder to calm her down. She looked at him a bit shocked and surprised but he shook his head and she seemed to calm down slightly.
"Don't you see, this is what Cordelia wants." Nyra said noting the tension that was rising in the air. "That was the point of this whole game, was to watch us turn on each other. If we kill someone and it's the wrong someone, that's one less child that gets to return home to their district." The word 'child' didn't escape their notice, for several glances flashed towards Abigail and Jason.
"You're kidding yourselves." Caydence said with an amused laugh. "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Darius asked standing up to bring himself up to height.
"You really think the Capitol or the Game Maker is going to let us all out of here alive?" He raised his eyebrows in disbelief. "Didn't you see what they did to Katniss and Peeta? They were going to fuck them, they may have gotten away with it that time but look where they are now." Caydence said with a shrug.
"No, she made the announcement personally, if she goes back on her word the backlash will be dire." Rochelle said pointedly. "I heard my mentor talking about the games last year, when Heavensbee made the announcement, the Capitol was in an uproar. They wont make that mistake again."
"Right now we've got bigger problems," Zephyr finally said, "We can sit here and debate what we're going to do, what we aren't going to do, the motives of the Game Makers and the politics of Panem all night but right now we've got Yondaime and Alex who are hurt, two missing tributes, a new tribute and Abigail's disappearance to think about."
"Abby is the only one whose any good at medicine besides..." Karim said, her voice growing tinier as the sentence drew on.
"Let's question her?" Brilliant offered, several looked at him and he shrugged. "Look she may have been doing what she said she was doing, we won't know until we ask and look at the evidence. I think Alex was the last one to see her too."
Darius walked over and with Braum's help they lifted both Abigail and Jason up to their feet and walked them over to the circle around the fire. No one seemed to want to lead the questioning, but after a minute or so passed Brilliant finally asked, "Abigail we need to know why you didn't tell anyone where you were going."
The girl seemed petrified, unsure of where the conversation would eventually end. "Alex." She finally said after a few moments. "He was getting worse by the second, I saw the ninroot needed to make a broth that would break his fever not too far back. I wasn't gone very long, I couldn't have gone and done something so terrible and made it back in time."
"Yeah except nobody saw you leave." Bellatrix accused. The group was silent, all trying to wrack their brains for when they saw her last. "Except for Alex, whose conveniently in a damned coma."
"Well I saw her." The group was silent, all staring at Jason, suspicious of him almost immediately.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Daniel asked, as though he was not quite convinced.
"Would you have believed me?" Jason asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Touche." Zephyr said with a casual shrug. Braum finally made his presence known, standing up and in his hand was a small pouch. He tossed it towards the group and it had been between Bae Liev and Robin who would have caught it, but Robin was still preoccupied staring at Yondaime and Andrea, so Bae Liev saved her from getting a pouch to the head. "There's a root in her pack." Braum said as she stared at him confused. Many peered over Bae Liev's shoulder as she fumbled with the straps and opened it. Carl nodded his head, "That's ninroot. It grows in my district."
"It doesn't prove anything, she could've grabbed it anywhere." Eviat said his voice wasn't exactly accusing, more suggesting every angle.
"I think we should really work together." Jason said, "I know it's hard to trust anyone right now, but we're really going to need to if we're going to survive this. Listen-"
Most ignored him, but it was only right after he spoke did a soft 'beeping' draw their attention upward, a parachute carrying a package down to the tributes.
"Whose it for?" Brilliant asked. Darius being one of the tallest leapt and caught in the air.
"Doesn't say." Darius opened the package and inside was a salve with a note. He read it. "For Yondaime."
"But nothing for Alex." Abigail said a bit saddened.
"I think we should let her go, let her make this broth for Alex." Zephyr said, "If he gets better then we have another witness, besides we can't keep dragging him around with us. We may have to move any second." So with reluctance, the group let Abigail go. She went to work immediately mixing the broth, with careful eyes on her as she started combining a plethora of plants.
"What about me?" Jason said a bit hopeful. The group stared at each other. "I have something you guys might want." He said, that piqued their curiosity.
"What is it?" Fortuna asked suspiciously.
"Information."
"Or you could tell us, and we wont kill you." Carl said in his best threatening voice, but even so it was still laced with mirth.
"Fine. I heard something, before I came up," He said inhaling sharply. "Two of the Game Makers were talking, they said something about Protocol X."
Robin, though intrigued had left the group to join Andrea and Yondaime, with both girls tending tentatively to the wounds he'd received.
"What's Protocol X?" Daniel asked.
"I don't know. They said they were going to implement it at sunrise and that it would change the course of the game, said the Capitol would be pleased with the events."
"We all know what that means." Cayden scoffed.
"Is there anything else you can remember?" Bellatrix asked, a bit more softness in her tone.
"Yeah- they said they had something big in store for the girl on fire." Jason looked over at Abigale who, with Robin's help was forcing some of her broth down Alex's throat.
NORMAL CHOICE
[1] SEEK HIGH GROUND
[2] GET SLEEP
(Keep in mind sleep deprivation will influence your character's decisions in the upcoming events)
I decided to give you a teaser with what interrogating Jason might have wrought- so you only get half the info. *tsk* After your choice, there will be another intermediate post that offers more clues/hints. ASSASSINS, your phase is next.
Seek High Ground
Id rather be alive with a slightly muggy mind then sleeping and potentially dying
Seek High Ground.
