Mutants. The topic is hotly debated. The mutant gene has been discovered and is present in around 1 of every 100 people, and active in around 1 in 10 of those. They are a normal occurrence in everyday society, seen as their own minority. However, they are cast in a few different lights. There are a few mutants who do nothing but work for the good of mankind, stopping criminals in the streets and saving lives. On the other end of the spectrum there are devious psychopaths that murder and steal with few that can stop them. Most other mutants are somewhere in between, because life is a sea of grey, not just black and white. Mutants in this day and age suffer discrimination from certain parts of society and even the government, with certain laws against them.

One of the more important laws is that all individuals with mutant powers be monitored. All their personal information is available to the public, just like a sex offender, and more than a few mutants find this very unfair. Of course, that was just the tip of the ice burg and now they are segregated in many parts of the community, having to be cared for in separate parts of hospitals and go to different schools. The animosity is building between man and mutant, and there are differing opinions. Some of them are extreme, but most mutants want to be accepted, how is a different story. Well, whatever you believe you can always log on to Mutantbook, a popular social networking site for mutants to gather, chat, and share.

The city of Gotham is your playground, be it for adventure or mayhem. Will you be a paragon for good, just like the comic books? Will you abuse your natural-born talents and attempt world domination? Or will you simply try to live your life as someone with special powers? The choice is yours...

As you can see, this RP will be about mutants and their actions in the world. While you can go to extremes as hero or villain, there is a lot of grey area to work with. It will be more about how a mutant goes about their daily life, albeit with more action and drama than normal people.

1. Normal forum rules apply, such as no G-modding or Metagaming. Use good grammar and spelling and such.

2. The maturity level of this RP will be higher, but not too high. Personally, my current character will curse like a sailor and there will be some blood and violence, but it won't be a gore fest and try to keep explicit romantic relationships to a minimum. Not that there can't be any romance, but if it comes to things like sex just fade to black, cool?

3. Your character can have 1 power and 1 power only. These powers will not include time manipulation, teleportation, or shadow manipulation. Your power can be whatever you want, but it can't be an existing power. However, if you have a power available to you it is possible for you to come up with creative ways to use it. Your power must have certain limits to it and will not grow in power that much as the RP goes on (unless I can come up with a plot device). Also, no gravity manipulation, because that's what I'll be using.

4. There will be a set tier system in place so that no one completely overpowers everyone else. There is a simple plot mechanic behind incredibly powerful and/or dangerous mutants, being that they are put to death out of pure fear. At MAX power your character should be able to decimate an area a bit bigger than a large intersection. Of course, finding an interesting way to use your powers could make you more dangerous (if that is your chosen path). Rules of thumb: run it by me or the Co-GMs to see if it's okay or observe how everyone else is posting.

5. Me and the Co-GMs will have the final say on everything, including power usage and fights that drag on too long. The Co-GMs will be: TwistedShadow, Cyan, SoulThunder, and vTempest (if he shows up, he's been gone).

6. Post "Mutantbook" somewhere in your first IC post to verify that you read the rules.

Ability: Manipulation over gravity. This power over gravity includes manipulating the direction and amount, in a way so that both the flow and intensity of gravity can be affected. She can, for instance, alter her own gravity to make her weightless, or seem very heavy to those around her. She can stand on walls and cielings while others continue to walk about her normally. She can also extend this reach to others, manipulating gravity in their vicinity in order to "throw" opponents, make them lose their equilibrium, or apply pressure so powerful that they find it difficult to stand.
Her power is not limited to use, but however to number of gravity fields she is manipulating and the intensity. This is the reason that she can't just crush everyone in the room or throw someone into the stratosphere. She must manipulate each field individually, making simple maneuvers like levitation easy, but something as complex as controlled flight almost impossible.

Attire
Battle: Hope used to wear a thick paintball vest she's outfitted with metal plates, greaves, shoulder pads, shin guards, and a hooded purple cloak with a face obscuring screen. Now she has embraced being a mutant as something to be proud of and will stay in her casual attire.
Casual: Hope tends to wear a 'classic casual' type of attire. She prefers ratty jeans and a T-shirt to something overly complicated, but will sometimes work to coordinate an outfit into something more along the lines of 'rocker girl'.
Other Noticeable Features: Hope's right arm is covered in scars from her palm to half-way up her forearm, which she normally covers with bandages or sleeves to hide them. She also has a tattoo of a wilting rose on her right shoulder blade.

Bio
Hope was not one, but two people: Hope and Wisp Thomas. She has been one person for about a year, but before then she was born with multiple personality disorder and harbored two consciousnesses within her. Hope was the good girl, albeit a troubled and sad one if not prone to being emotional. Wisp was her opposite, prone to anger, cold-heartedness, and violent outbursts, with a complete disregard for the rules. She was a military brat and moved quite often as her father is an Army Major. Her mother worked with the news and was never home until late, but her father was never there at all. Her mother, Beth, would constantly verbally and psychologically abuse Hope's personality Wisp, believing her to be an unwanted guest in her true daughter's body instead of what she really was: a second daughter. Most people just thought she ran hot and cold, but was otherwise treated normally. Until Hope learned to control her powers.

Hope was 14 when her powers began to show, but she tried to hide them from everyone, letting them slowly develop. Wisp, however, was enthralled. She wanted to prove to everyone what she could do, impress them. This led to an incident that sent a girl in her class to the hospital, causing her parents to move again. Eventually, Hope(Wisp) developed apathy and stopped caring about normal things like school and life in general. But she was enraged how mutants were treated. Wisp believed that mutants were far above normal people and shouldn't be treated as lower. This led her to become a vigilante of sorts, causing general mayhem and attempting to spread pro-mutant propaganda using Mutantbook and other means. This lead to a series of incidents that found her becoming involved with other mutants and quite a few near-death experiences, one which lost her the use of her right hand. After a one such event where she actually died on a hospital gurney for almost a minute, she could no longer keep up her harrowing lifestyle for a while and decided that mutant conquest be left to someone a bit more capable.

Hope spent a few months in the hospital after that, the doctors trying to do everything they could to heal her and fix her hand. The nerve damage was severe, and they could do nothing. After Hope was eventually sent home, she went back to life as usual, going to high school and doing what high school students do. After the loss of her hand, she attempted suicide (for the second time) but was sent to see a psychologist about her problems. He concluded that it was a multitude of reasons, but found one that would lighten the load. He prescribed her medication and had her undergo neuro-therapy. While doing treatments, Hope continued to go to (or skip) school, making few friends while she was there and absolutely none that lasted outside of high school. She graduated with low marks but didn't get accepted to college. At this point, the treatments had fused Hope's personalities together, creating a mixture of the two that left her feeling complete, if not a little strange. A few more months still living in her parent's house saw her mother kicking her out and telling her to get a job. Hope lived in the park for almost a week before she got a small cashier's job at a gas station, just enough to get a run-down apartment downtown. Eventually, she quit her job to become a foreman for Gotham City Construction, seeing the opportunities as an apprentice. She moved out of her old apartment and into her current one, one with a roommate, an optimistic, proper girl by the name of Jenny Grove.

Additional Notes
Each of Hope's personalities had a different dominant hand, but when her personalities fused she became ambidextrous. However, she appears left-handed because her right hand is useless. She has a vendetta against a man who she only knows by the name 'Frostbite', and although she realizes that back then she was just a stupid kid that he is still a monster and has never forgiven him for taking her hand. Hope is loosely associated with a few other mutants as well, one with wings whose name is unknown to her and an immortal calling herself 'Hydra'. She has a love-hate relationship with her mother. While having a complete personality now, sometimes her distinct personas will shine through. She has unresolved anger issues and exhibits a short temper. She will fly into a rage if you jokingly call her 'crazy', 'psycho', or any variant.

Rejuvenation. His power keeps him from dying or aging he will always look the exact same as the instant his mutant powers awakened, functionally the same at least. If someone where to remove one of his hands or his head, the rest of his body would grow the missing part back, exactly as it was. His body is constantly rejuvenating itself to keep it looking young and fresh.

Casual: Tailor made suits, and other similar high status attire, almost always accompanied by the shawl that has the religious symbols of his cult on it.

Bio: Malcolm was born into a humble working class family. He had always loathed the cards he had been dealt by fate. He felt that if he had been given a better start in life, and had been given the superior education and resources that the rich were afforded he could have changed the world for the better. As it was though he was stuck forming one of the first worker's unions and demanding better treatment from his employers, in the hope that he would not be one of the people maimed by the machines he worked with everyday.

He did get the safer working conditions he had fought for, but to no avail it seemed as soon after the changes were made to Malcolm's workplace a machine claimed his right arm. As he lay bleeding on the factory floor cursing fate, something miraculous happened! His arm grew back perfectly intact and functional, the doctors at the time were uncertain what to make of it, but Malcolm knew exactly what do to with it. He would change the world, even if it would take a thousand years. He would do it.

So he started his church "The Providence of Merit". He attracted followers with his passionate speech and the 'miracles' he could perform. He would usually be able to gather a mass of followers before the government would intervene. Governments usually don't take too kindly to militant religious groups.

Additional Notes: Malcolm is always carrying a small handgun on his person, purely for self defense of course.

Name: Richard Harris
Alias: Paragon
Age: 21

Ability
Wings - Richard has a pair of incredibly strong and flexible wings which have grown out of his back. They can easily lift up a person and are so flexible that Richard can fold them onto his back to only make a light bulge if he is wearing a large jacket. However, Richard's body is still mortal. Even though it can be very, very difficult to destroy his wings, his body is not. These wings have lost the ability to change color depending on the time of day (night turns them black, day turns them white), but his hair and eyes are changing color to match the pearl white of his wings. His mutation is changing his appearance, but for some reason he hasn't gained any new abilities.

Battle: A white cloak that hides the upper half of his face very well, without limiting his vision to an uncomfortable level.
Casual: Usually wears a large, brown jacket which stops at his ankles. Mostly because Richard needs to hide his wings when he is not flying.
Other Noticeable Features: Richard is an excellent photographer and has a sharp look in his eyes. He always seems to be carrying a camera with him.

Bio: Richard's life wasn't very easy due to the pair of wings that were growing out of his back as he aged. During his earlier years he was frequently bullied, but despite having the strength to fend off the people who attacked him he never used his wings. He felt proud coming back home with a variety of bruises on his body while his wings looked perfectly healthy. He was the kind of person who accepted trouble when it came but refused to let it affect his education.

When he went to high school he managed to control his wings well enough to fold them neatly behind his back, keeping them hidden underneath slightly larger clothes. This gave Richard a completely new life as people did not see him as a mutant. During this time in high school he earned an A* GCSE in Art and later decided to pursue Photography, with a number of As following behind him in other subjects.

Deciding to move on away from his family, he moved out of Britain and traveled to America. Specifically Gotham City, where he knew a lot of mutant activity was going on. He went there hoping that he would find some friends just like him, but all the time he never did until an encounter with a girl called Hope Thomas. Until that point he simply took well edited pictures of landmarks in Gotham, generating an income as those professional pictures were sold to a number of websites.

One year ago, Richard put up the guise of being Hope's "angel". It was only two days before his meeting with her would actually drag him into real trouble. After encounters with a man named "Frostbite" who wanted to kill Hope, Richard fought alongside Hope while they were in a hospital. Knocked out as Richard was flung back onto a wall, he quickly disappeared from the scene as he woke up from unconsciousness.

Now he is back after a long time of quiet thought. It was unknown knowledge that Richard had actually loved Hope during the time he'd talked to her, some sort of instant attraction even though he did not know her very well. So Richard is coming back with a new goal and name.

Ability
Can create translucent, blue shields of energy. The shields are limited to basic geometric shapes, with the maximum width of 2x2 metres and maximum thickness of 2 inches. The edges cut like diamonds, and the front is as strong as the frontal glascis plate on a tank. They cannot go beyond 5 metres away from him in any direction, and the maximum he can control at any one time it 2, and they will both be limted to 1x1 and 1 inch thick. The shields do not bend or buckle, they are only damaged by things powerful enough to destroy them in one hit. Of course, you can just shoot him from a different angle.

Bio: A British university student, studying medicine in Gotham. His powers emerged while there, and now is trying to juggle helping people with his powers, with training at the university. He is limited to random wandering into dangerous territory if he wants to fight criminals, or to use his moped to go to publiscised things like bank robberies or supervillain attacks.

Alias: ProdigyV- A forum name on Mutantbook, she doesn't have an alter ego, nor any want to be a hero/ villain.

Wavelength Manipulation: Emily is able to elongate and shorten wavelength around, giving her the ability to change sound into light and even produce mild amounts of radioactive energy, such as UV light and Microwaves. Her main focus is creating light shows to accompany her music.

Bio: Coming from a well-off home, Emily had the chance to chase down any of the passions her parents approved of. Many things caught her fancy: horseback riding, photography, ballet, but the one that stuck with her was playing the violin. Years were sunk into mastering the instrument, and she would practice whenever she had time to kill. Her love of music, skills with a violin, and brief years in dance studios came together in a routine that mesmerized her audience. Her unique style created a small following among her friends and acquaintances, which continued to grow through the years. Her following built up a strong amount of self-confidence in Emily and solidified her identity as an individual, something she felt was more important than anything else. Her local fame also had a draw back, when her ability first surfaced, and an array of colors lit up her show, word spread quickly; she was put on the government's radar almost instantly. Emily is a realist about her situation, knowing that fear of people like her may well lead to her being locked up or worse. Knowing this, she tries to live life to the fullest, at parties, among friends, and in every way possible. While her moral compass fluctuates in the grey area, she considers herself as a good person, though one without the desire to become a huge hero like so many others with powers. Instead Emily uses her ability for fun when relaxing with friends and as an extra element of dazzle in her performances.
Recently, Emily's fame has exploded, as people rallied around her for the public nature of her abilities. While not an A-lister, she's hit the big-time with her career as a musician and as one of the few outed mutant celebrities.

Additional Notes: Her parents giving her almost everything she wants has left her somewhat demanding and dominant, this trait usually surfacing in her trying to manipulate those around her.
