Two programs i like to use to get around firewalls xD

TOR: The Onion Router. A project started by the US naval research laboratory to get around foreign firewalls for research purposes. It uses the onion routing method to make transmissions anonymous and very difficult to trace. (Overkill for a school firewall)

TAILS: A bootable operating system using the Linux base that uses only a computer's RAM to run, leaves no trace, and allows you to get around just about any firewall. (Complete overkill, like slicing a melon with a nuke, against a school firewall)

I think both are now maintained by the EFF, so its free to use.

Oh, and both are quite user friendly.

The Olympic Torch passed right by my flat a few weeks ago, at about 7.30am :3

I've heard about TOR, but never TAILS. I'm curious, now...it would be pretty useful to have that for any time I was on the school computers...they have the City Council block on them, which is infuriating for teachers because it blocks YouTube videos.

Also, motivation: I'll die if you don't remodel it. Die.

For youtube videos TOR might work the best, it is the easiest. With TOR videos load a bit slower, due to having to go through multiple paths, but they'll load eventually.

TAILS is a bit finicky, by default it doesn't let any scripts run, so you'll have to go into settings, allow scripts to run, and download the proper plugins and implement them. But once you have it saved in the boot setting files it'll run like a charm. I suggest avoiding SD cards as well as DVD, and just use a 2GB USB for the boot device. If you need help with anything just let me know.

Here is a link to both.

TOR Browser Bundle Just follow the instructions and it'll install in a simple click and run style. I also suggest putting this on a USB, so you can use it anywhere.

TAILS Read more about TAILS too, there lots of other goodies. Theres an encrypted IM programs that runs most popular IM services, a PGP encryption/decryption program, and lots of other fun stuff. TAILS uses the TOR program by default for web surfing, along with a Firefox spinoff called Iceweasel for the browser (Its pretty much identical to Firefox save for some security fixes.)

You might need a tutorial for making your USB bootable if you haven't done it before. *sadnerd*

I'll look into both, and thanks for the help. I know a huge amount about computer hardware, but surprisingly little - more than most, but not much more - about the software aspects. I think I'll dive into these simply out of interest, and because it will be pretty useful to be able to load YT videos at school and such if I need to. How much slower is it, for loading the videos - as in, is it unbearable or just slightly lengthened?

Having your own laptop eliminates all these problems But i wish i knew about this 7 years ago.
The amount of times i've tried to access sites like Youtube and Facebook and got a slap in the face by the block is beyond a joke.

Getting my own laptop costs about £300-500, which would be just under a third to half of my savings. I'm already saving for uni, I can't afford to buy something like that :/
