Always considering new characters. Please contact Luned if you'd like to jump in.
In short, it's a camping trip gone wrong with a mythological twist.
Summer has finally hit Boston and everyone's itching to escape north for a spell, so when Luned invites you and some friends to go camping up in Maine, you jump at the chance. You and four others pile with Luned into the Argo, her beater, and head up I95 for a week at her family's cabin on a pond. But soon after arriving it appears that this will not be a typical vacation, as peculiar things begin to happen and the lines between reality and legendary blur.
To clarify, this is not going to be a raunchy party weekend, nor is it a typical horror blockbuster deal. To give a perhaps spoilerific hint, it may be vaguely inspired by O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
There will be action, canoeing, drama, mysterious mountain men, angry bears, angier moose, rifle-toting Acadians, psychotic delusions, and maybe even some roasted marshmallows.
There is a plot with a beginning and end, but enough flexibility to make it largely character-driven. Emphasis will be placed on character development. The setting is modern day, real world; there are no fantasy elements unless I decide to include some.
There are five spots open as that's how many people could cram in Luned's car. Not all spots have to be filled, though, and I would prefer less people who can remain fairly active (post at least a few times a week) versus filling the maximum with less active writers. I might not be able to accept everyone who applies depending on the variety of characters we get, so feel free to brainstorm your character in comments here or through PMs. I might be able to give some tips on how to optimize them for the plot.
Luned's friends all fit into the post-college age group. Some graduated, some didn't. Some got into their dream career right out of school, some are doomed to day job drudgery as they work toward their dreams. Not everyone will know each other well, but they'll have had some level of acquaintance through Luned. Please develop backstories with other characters OOC before the game starts. A wide range of diversity is desired in personality types, ambitions, backgrounds, survival skills, etc. Everyone should be plain ol' human, by the way.
Character Sheet
Spoiler
Name: Age: (Mid-twenties)
Appearance: (Feel free to include an image, but please be sure to specify things like height, build, hair/eye/skin color, identifiable characteristics, typical clothing, etc. And sorry to be that guy, but no anime, please.)
Personality: (Be sure to add some quirks! Any phobias? Weird habits?)
Background: (Where are they from? How'd they end up in Boston? What do they do now? What ambitions do they have? Feel free to keep some secrets, but you should lay out everything their closest friend on the trip would already know about them, within reason.)
Survival Skills: (Your character might have none, but it'd be good to lay them out in the open from the start so I can plot accordingly.)
Connections: (List any pre-established relationships with the other characters.)
Luned Cunningham
Spoiler
Name: Luned Cunningham Age: 24
Appearance: See signature. She's average height and build with long brown hair, blue-gray eyes, and pale skin with freckles. She has a bit of vintage style, but doesn't try hard enough to match so kind of has a "bag lady" thing going. (But she's an artist, so it's okay.) She slouches, and all her shoes have holes in them.
Personality: She's a social butterfly and makes friends easily, though she's a bit on the aloof side. She's definitely more of a dreamer than a doer and bites her nails when she's nervous. But don't be fooled if she seems just short of a picnic; she's one of the most resourceful people you'll ever meet.
Background: She grew up in Maine, the product of a happy and very extended-family-centric household, and went to BU for painting. She graduated a couple years ago and hasn't been able to make a living as an artist yet, so she works at a coffee shop to make ends meet between shows. This lifestyle has her rather frustrated, but she's always been optimistic enough that she's still looking for her big break right around the corner.
Survival Skills: Though she's a bit rusty from living in the city she did grow up largely in the woods, so she has some basic skills. She's also camped, hunted, and fished since she was a kid.
Connections
Olive: They met while she was working at the zoo over the summer after her freshman year of college, and they've been inseparable since.
Looks awesome! I know how thought out you make your plots, so I'm sure this is going to be a blast. I'll get my character sheet up tomorrow.
Quick question: Is this all going to take place at the cabin, or will they be doing some traveling/camping out of tents as well? Just trying to think of what skills (or lack there of) will be useful.
Their base is the cabin, but eventually they'll have an adventure of sorts that will require several days of hiking, plus different characters may get side plots that require them to leave to do things at certain points. I don't want the title to make this sound centric around Luned –– she just gets everyone together for the trip, then I'll make sure each individual character has plenty of mystery and conflict unique to them.
Glad to have you on board! : )

And for the record they will be roughing it at some points, but no one's going to need crazy survival skills to manage. Random skills could be fun for me to work into the plot, though, like if someone practices archery as a sport, or maybe someone was a champion swimmer, or one is a gardener and might have encyclopedic knowledge of useful herbs.
Appearance: Nate is about 5'11" with a medium build. His skin is bronzed and his hair is a sandy blonde, bleached by the sun. He has large and round innocent brown eyes, with exceptionally long eyelashes, and a friendly smile, accompanied by dimples. He has several tattoos, mostly located on his arms and back. His fashion is quite simple. He prefers to wear lose fitting jeans or cargo pants, cotton shirts, sleeves or sleeveless, and work boots.
Personality: Nate is friendly, charismatic, quick-witted, and a great conversationalist. He has boyish charms, but can be quite manipulative when the need arises. He has a few friends, but no close friendships. He likes to keep his distance when things start becoming personal. He never mentions his past in conversation.
Background: Nate grew up in New York, in a low-income neighborhood. At a young age he fell into a bad crowd. He was sent to juvenile detention on several occasions for breaking and entering and theft. Nate did poorly in school due to his "extra-curricular" activities. He graduated high school with a GED at the age of 19, and never attended college. Currently, he works general construction jobs in Boston.
Survival Skills: Due to Nate's criminal past, he has some interesting skill sets. He is fantastic at reading people's body languages, learning their habits, and tracking their movements. He can disarm alarms and pick locks. Also, due to his current job, Nate is adept at construction.
Connections
Luned: Nate met Luned as a regular at her coffee shop. He sometimes is hired to build her canvases for art projects. Luned is intrigued by his tattoos and often suggests new ink.
Appearance: 5'8". A little on the thicker side with big hips and chubby thighs. Long frizzy light auburn hair. Gray-Blue eyes. Often wears shabby homemade dresses with billowy fabric and cardigans or jackets thrown on top.
Personality: Olive is from deep Appalachia, having grown up in some of the poorest areas in the US, she has developed a few obvious traits, the first being her thick accent, the second being her lack of schooling. Olive is a kind soul, but can be a bit aggressive about her ideas of friendship, and even more naive about her ideas of everything else. This can come off as annoying to those who don't know her well, but hopefully her gentle qualities make up for that just as quickly.
Background: Olive dropped out of school at a young age to take care of her aging grandmother, and as a result has a fairly low literacy level. When her grandmother passed about 5 years ago, Olive had a very hard time finding anyone that would hire her, and an even harder time keeping a job when she can barely read and write at the level of a child. Thankfully an uncle she had only met twice arranged for her to come work at a zoo in Boston. She was so happy for the opportunity that she didn't care at all when she realized her job was cleaning up all the messes others didn't want to deal with. It was here that she met Luned and they became fast friends. Luned is aware of Olive's flaws, and Olive has patience for Luned's artistic eccentricities, resulting in a very close bond.
Survival Skills: Over the years, working at the zoo, Olive has listened in on many guided tours and has memorized the plaques in front of each animal exhibit during her breaks and cleaning duties. As a result she's picked up a lot of knowledge about animals in the wild, and is pretty good at tracking/observing their habits as well.
Connections: Luned is Olive's closest friend.
-------------------------
*This is a side character, pre approved for the plot. It does not count as one of the characters that will be in the car for the trip, but rather a townie that the characters will encounter once they arrive.*
Name: Jonas Fletch
Age: 26
Appearance: 6'2", tall and strong from his work on a fishing boat. Hazel eyes. Messy brown hair with cowlicks and flyaways that never seems to be neat except when under a flat cap or beanie. Scruffy 5 'o clock shadow and bushy eyebrows. Often seen wearing a plain long sleeve knit shirt with a black jacket and jeans.
Personality: Jonas is either seen brooding alone on the edge of his boat, deep in his thoughts, or laughing and showing off his flirtatious charms when around friends or a pretty girl. Which side is truer of his personality is up for debate. If he's not in his lonesome brooding stage, Jonas is almost always up for a little mischievous fun, and is the type of young man who gets along easily with other guys. This may also be due to the fact that he's notorious for having dated almost every girl in their small town at some point. He wouldn't consider himself a 'player' or even fickle, since he's never cheated, Jonas is just someone that dates anyone in hopes of forming a connection, then is always disappointed when he finds them less than perfect or below his strange and high ideals. The last major aspect of Jonas' personality is his tendency to stretch the truth to make it seem more exciting than it actually is. This gets him in hot water now and then, but also keeps him popular at the local bar as a great storyteller.
Background: Jonas is born and bred in Maine and has hardly ever left the state, or his small town for that matter. His family owns an area of camping grounds and he grew up tending to tourists who were there for sight seeing or antiquing. As he grew older, he spent more and more time on the job most young men in his town join: fishing. Fishing is now his primary job and tending the camp grounds his second. As a result he tends to always smells like the faint mix of sweat, fish and pine.
Survival Skills: Jonas is an outdoorsman, so he knows a little bit about a lot of things, but the only area he is really a master in would be that dealing with the water and fishing.
Connections: Jonas's best friend is Dickon, Luned's cousin. He also knows Luned from their childhood summers, but is not exactly thrilled to see her for a few reasons. (that may be a lie...)
Heh, this looks VERY cool. I saw it before, but really only saw 'Argonauts', so figured it would be some solely Ancient Greek type shebang. However, just read through it now and it seems intriguing, to say the least. I'm about to hit the hay, but I could probably spin up a CS by tomorrow, if not all slots are full by then.
