So how do you find Rps that are worth joining?

So I've been lurking on this site and others for years and I just can't seem to find anything worth joining. Nobody had any interest in anything I've put up and it's hard as hell to find anything that I'd be interested in joining. I don't really understand it to be honest. I'm not exactly looking for something unusual or unique although I guess I can be a bit picky. Everyone else seems to manage it, It's frustrating and I'd love to finally join an rp that actually runs for more time than it takes to set up.

How the hell do you people find rps worth joining?

Edit: Actually let's add to this to stop it dying, what do you look for in an Rp ?

I'm really just out for a plot or setting that gives me an idea to make an interesting character, it's also nice when the whole thing starts out internally consistant. Genre is totally irrelevant although I really hate trying to wade through intro posts that're closer to novels. The problem is that I don't often find things that meet this criteria.

I just think of my RP level judged by myself and harmonize it with my current situation. Say... I am good enough to RP in Casual or Free, but not Advanced. I could go for Casual, but if I don't feel like it/ have the time/ etc I settle for Free. But sometimes it doesn't matter as long as it interests me.
Done?Well then I search for a criteria to search it by, like... do I want a 1x1 with a story, just another Arena fight-to-the-death? Maybe just a group RP, and if the latter then what am I expecting? Say... a tournament, saving a certain person, object, place etc , for it to be post-apocalyptic, pre-apocalyptic. Violent or not, you know... you don't need to perfectly create a plot in your mind and(since it's also useless since different people think differently and there are bound to be differences even in the slightest) hope for it to be identical.
Ah yes, if there is a certain book, TV show, anime, manga which's universe you wish it to take place in or at least which you wish it to be based on, then that may also help.
At least... that is pretty much how I search for RPs, hope this helps.
The dark rises gradually by day
Deny and turn our eyes from it we may
A fragrance of decay is exhaled
Out of Death's bitter lips, and pale
Tis' be our end, by our will, our hand,
But no one could have foreseen it so grand.
The triange of Life, Dreams and Hope collides
As I behold where forever dies,
    Clawing, scratching, groping everywhere
For an inch, an inch of what once gave me life,
Of the memories that make me feel oh, so alive.
    But you're not there...

    I'm sick of failing.
    Tired of working.
    Done with trying.
    Sure, I'm laughing.
    Yet inside I'm dying.
    Hey I just met you
    And this is crazy
BUT I'M ABOUT TO KILL YOU
    So silence maybe

I just look. Join an Rp that has potential, even join an Rp that you don't really like, make some friends, and have them look over your interest checks. If they like your interest check they probably won't just up and leave like some people will. I get the idea that you are really into things that are unique and that means your going to have to look even harder.

Thanks for replies, I dunno I'm not picky about genre. I'm also fairly familiar with the mechanics of finding posts :P

I just can't seem to find anything interesting, fantasy Rps seem to have a habit of telling you nothing at all or everything, I can't seem to find a sci-fi rp that remember that sci is an abbreviation for science and just not that interested in rp'ing in pre-existing universes because I don't know enough or I'm simply not interested enough in it. I just sorta wondered whether there was something I was missing.

Well in sci-fi Rps, you must remember that not only does sci stand for science, but fi stands for fiction.

Well when you combine them you're supposed to get fiction based on science :P

Don't get me wrong I'm not going automatically turn things down because they don't precisely stack up with what I know about the universe but so much of it seems to be

    "What if Mass Effect but..."

    or

    "What if Fallout but..."

And that's boring, I've already played those. I mean we're talking about written role-plays, you have no constraints so do something interesting.

This is some sound advice. The more you and the players are invested in each other and the RP the less likely it is to fail I have some very long running RPs and they are that way because of the connections we make. I encourage OOC banter in my RPs for the same reason. If you run into someone you like in an RP that fails, then see what else they do and if it interest you join, you'll already have a connection. Tying your characters together is another way to strengthen an RP (but not exactly on topic). If you have ideas for the RP, PM the GM, they may be receptive and it will make the game more to your tastes. Also look at the GM's history, see if people complain on their VM wall about the game dying, check out their past RP's and see how long lived they are so you don't "Waste your time" with an RP likely to flounder out of the gate. Or just go into any RP with the intention of wresting fun out of it no matter how short lived it is. This is something I have learned and take to heart. So that's my ramble on the subject.

So the best advice for finding rps is to have already been in one that went on long enough for me to find people I like roleplaying with :P
I'm not trying to cheapen anything people have to say, it's just that I still have that original problem of not being able to find anything I want to join.

Not quite. There was that bit about finding fun in any you joined and the bit about talking with the GM to add some personal touches and yet another part about making connections between characters to further add to your enjoyment. All this requires that you join a RP. Will it be an amazing RP? Who knows, you have to take some risks and it is so hard to tell how good a RP will be from an interest check or even the first few posts. So join one that seems ok and see if you can help make it great.

    No easy answers really.
