On another note, how are we supposd to prove we aren't plagiarizing? How do we keep it anonymous? As nice as the idea is, mdk is right. There are too many things involved that make it hard on the musician.

It'd make more sense for this:

Casual - Go by the month's set theme. Requirements can allow someone to do a cover. That means you only go by the month's theme.

Advanced - Go by the month's set theme. Require original work only.

The month's set theme - A specific genre of music.

This makes more sense because it's not fair to dis-include covers of other artists' music. It's a display or one's talent. If you're good at keyboard, you may not be as good at writing the sheet music. Plus sometimes it takes well over a month to write music. To get (if there is any) lyrics and the instrumentals to match isn't as easy as it may seem.

Its a cool idea, but you have the problem that members are going to start recognizing peoples voices/styles so it would be very anonymous. :/

WOTM will accept music lyrics just as they would accept poems. As a WOTM Manager, I can say these things. So there's at least half of it right there without a need for another contest.

Yes but whose to say a MOTM contest would have to be about writing song lyrics?

An AOTM entry can be anything from a hand drawn work to something put together on Photoshop to making a doll, so why does MOTM have to be defined as one form of 'making music'?

Maybe it's sheet music? Maybe someone's singing a song that someone else already wrote? Or similar except playing an instrument instead of singing? There are probably more things I could say here but I'm not much of a musician myself so I can't think of much else. Either way all I'm saying is that this doesn't look like something that would work well just grouped with another contest.

Besides, just writing song lyrics without putting actual music to it seems more like a plain-old poem to me.

I like this idea, but I don't think there's enough people here who make music to warrant it.

3 or 4 people would enter every month, lending itself to having the same winners over and over again. Not really worth it.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

I can't speak for AOTM, but that's where I'd toss the rest of those ideas if it was me. Nothing in the AOTM rules says you can't.

Edit: If people want to speak their poems, or sing their songs, I'd post up links or embedded players within a WOTM thread. Again, as a... as the WOTM Manager in charge, I can say this. These things are NOT against WOTM rules. They might risk anonymity to a certain extent, though.

I still stand by my argument that if musicians want to compete, grouping them with WOTM wouldn't be right. Art can take many forms, and so can music. It still seems like you're limiting what a musical entry in WOTM could be, and that's not what I think 8 wanted.

I still think we don't have enough musicians here on the Guild to make it work, but I also don't think 8 was asking for this to be the same as WOTM, because it really can't be. There are too many things "music" can be defined as, and even if that wasn't the case, you've got people who are trying to win a music contest entering a writing contest, which just isn't what 8's after.

The fact that there aren't enough musicians on RPGuild is WHY I'm trying to include them otherwise?

    This.

I mean, you could have different threads for different music styles, but, say.

Electronic Music (Trance, Dubstep, etc, etc): I know I'd have at least one competitor, as I make Dubstep, and Cid makes some form of Techno-Trance, with a bit of D'n'B mixed in.

Now, saying you DID have them set up fro different music styles/genres, you would have to set up multiple threads for each of the styles, AND then, another thread for each for voting.

While it's a good idea, I can't see it ever working effectively, as it's too much work, and a month isn't really a long time, I can throw tracks together in minutes, but, I'd never see those making the grade for a winning entry, all my GOOD pieces, all took around 4-6 weeks to perfect, then a further week or so to add my audio effects, such as the bass wobble.

There's just not enough time for most people, and, if a piece of work is rushed... Who's going to be proud of it
