Although I'm not too sure about your issue. Usually games really don't live that long in advanced, really. Dying before they even reach a second page is extremely common.

Either way I tend to join a more RP's late than at interest check phase, lately. I see your issue in casual but never really in advanced. Especially since advanced has an extremely high drop/death rate. Usually poking the OOC is just fine. I rarely see all slots filled up for games in advanced. Ironically a vast majority of active players in my own games as of late has been joining late.
As an advanced role player, I find it difficult to keep up with too many advanced players due to the air of elitism that starts to fester and choke things down. It's not impossible, but the ultimate irony of advanced has to be that if you get too many ultra-egoistic minds in one place, no matter how well meant the intentions, they will inevitable and invariable end up drowning each other with information and/or mess up the content of other people's posts.

If 10 Casual players post an average of 1-2 paragraphs per post, assuming you are one of them, you will have 9-18 paragraphs in total to recall when writing your own 1-2 paragraphs. If 10 Advanced players post an average of 3-4 paragraphs per post, assuming you are one of them, you will have 27-36 paragraphs to recall while writing your own 3-4 paragraphs.

Also, unlike in Casual where I've felt fully comfortable posting less than others so long as I post at least one small paragraph, in advanced I've found many people (including myself for a while) feel/felt the necessity to "out-do" others in the verbosity of one's post.

The ultimate plague of advanced isn't poor writing, inactivity, or any of those things. We have those just the same as casual and free do. The greatest plague of advanced is egoism, so much that if you put us all in one room we would choke and die from the narcissistic gasses we would naturally produce.

@Question: Limited Slots are typically used to help prevent the choke effect as described above in advanced. Depending on your tastes, you may want to consider taking up the mantle of the GM and befriending as many people as possible. Increases your chances to receive invitations to role plays.

There is no real reason to take me in late if it's an inconvenience. Yet, when I do come in, I ask politely, I come with a character sheet reflecting something the RP lacks in addition to as many ideas as I may offer, and I promise (truthfully) an extra mind to the creation process. Hasn't failed me so far.

I guess my big point is that, if you come in making it clear you're not a burden, in fact you'll be a help, there's no reason for a GM to deny you.
Thank you for this great advice. I've been having difficulty joining start-up RPs here because they either die before getting to the IC part, or they require setting aside time to be online as a group that I can't commit to because of my work schedule.

Perhaps I can do my research on a RP that's already underway and see if I can contribute something to the group.

Why are the slots limited? Meh, don't really care why so I just let it go. If/when I limit "slots" it's because I put a specific value on the amount of people I was willing to tolerate. BUT, that's just me.

As for getting into a good RP without being so late? Join the damn thing anyway! That's what I'd do. There would not be any "Aww... the spots are filled. *sad face*" I'd hop into the OOC, post that I wanted to RP, and then drop a CS full of AWESOME that no one could deny.

...or at least ask. I mean, really, the chances of them not letting in one person is pretty slim.
