"Run!"
Dmitri screamed in his accented voice, behind him he could hear the screech of the beast. Dmitri slammed into the steel door as he ripped out his keys and jammed it into the lock, with a click the door opened. Running in he turned to spot his comrade who was only feet away, behind him Dmitri could see the darkness advancing like a shadow fading into the night.
"Run Dragovich!" Dmitri screamed again as he looked at his watch almost 3:00 it was almost to late.
"Come on Dragovich come on!"
Dmitri heard the alarm on his watch go off looking ahead he saw the darkness reach out and grab Dragovich. Dragovich screamed as he was dragged back into the shadows, his screams quickly stopped as Dmitri slammed the door closed and locked the several bolts. There was a heavy slam on the other side of the door as Dmitri fell back to the cement floor backing away.
He had to be quick he had to radio for help. Running to the radio Dmitri clicked the receiver on as there was a rush of static. Twisting the dial Dmitri pressed down on the transmit button and spoke frantically.
"Base camp this is Dmitri Romanov calling from Camp Wilder, 50 miles south in the Antarctic circle. There has been an emergency situation, everyone is under attack, enemy is an unknown entity, have been unable to identify. I am one of the last survivors I am hulled up in the broadcast room, entity is outside the door.."
Dmitri hear a sick thud as the door moaned from the impact the door was not going to hold. With another hard impact Dmitri returned to the radio.
"Please send help! Possible survivors but I do not know how many, we were all separated. Farthest thing I can figure is entity used the darkness of night to move around, invisible to the human eye.."
Dmitri heard another sick thud on the door as he turned to see it bend in a crack in the door revealed the darkness beyond.
"Please send help! Please send immediate help!"
There was another sick thud as the door creaked loudly Dmitri pulled out the Beretta M9 as he pointed it at the door. The last thing that could be heard on the transmission was six gun shots and the screaming of Dmitri Romanov.
Main Base Camp
50 Miles north of the Arctic Circle Camp
Ten Hours after Initial Emergency Broadcast
Henry Collins walked down the feint path of the Arctic ground, the snow crunched under his feet as he came to a large building. Opening the door he felt the warm air of the building, he lowered the hood of his jacket and let the door close behind him. Pushing the goggles up off of his eye's he looked around the interior of the small room. From one of the few door a small man in a suit walked out, walking forward he offered a hand to Henry who took it. The small man spoke in what sounded like an Albanian accent.
"Major Collins I am glad that you could make it, as you know and can appreciate we have a very delicate situation. You understand that we must act quickly. I am Mr. Ludlow I am the Director of operations pertaining to the research sites in the Arctic. If you would please follow me."
Henry let go of the mans hand as he nodded following the small man to a door off to the side. Leading him into a rather spacious office, Ludlow closed the door and sat behind the desk almost immediately pulling out a recorder. Setting the recorder on his desk Henry removed the parka he wore as he set it on a chair and sat down.
"We received and Emergency Broadcast from our one of our Camps, 50 miles south of here. I think it would be better if you listened to the recording yourself so you can properly assess the situation."
Henry heard the click and then the sound of frantic mans voice over. He could hear the thuds in the back round, it was something big and something strong.. As the man spoke Henry could hear the fear in his voice that was never a good sign right off the back. The recording had been merely a minute or more long, it ended with gun shots and screams before Ludlow clicked the device off.
"My Collins what are your thoughts how do you believe we should proceed?"
Henry looked at Ludlow as he had been thinking to himself about what he had just heard.
"We definitely have a situation, if I am not mistaken communication rooms out in remote locations use heavy metal doors to secure vital equipment correct?"
Ludlow nodded to Henry as he put his hand to his chin and rubbed his five o clock shadow.
"Whatever this was took down a reinforced steel door, and it seemed to do it with rather ease. Which means whatever this is must be strong. Can you tell me what this research Camp was working on way out there? Most camps do not proceed so far in the Arctic at least not that far in the circle anyways.
Henry watched Ludlow the man looked like he was hiding a dirty secret, a child who stole from the cookie jar.
"They were working on extracting the remains of an ancient civilization who were long ago overwhelmed by the first ice age. The camp is located in an underground system which was discover many months ago."
"Excuse my saying but does that not seem dangerous to have an base camp under ground in the arctic?"
"Yes we were skeptic at first but it would seem that this cavern as we have come to call it is not what we would call normal. In fact the atmosphere alone suggests other wise. The air is warm down inside the cavern the ground soft, we did not know what to make of it. It was then we stumbled across the remains of an ancient civilization. We found it prudent to move our camp down into the cavern."
Henry scratched his chin this was rather perplexing even to him. Out here in the arctic a warm atmosphere this almost seemed like a joke. But he knew better, something was wrong and it had claimed the lives of researchers.
"Mr.Collins what do you recommend we do, there is far to much important research out at that Camp. We can not afford to lose this, we called you because we heard you and your team are the best mercenaries alive. We need you to go to that Camp and retrieve the research data."
Henry looked at Ludlow with a bad taste in his mouth, this man seemed to care more about the research data then he did the people.
"Mr. Ludlow as much as I am enthused and perplexed with what you have told me. I will not risk life and limb of myself or my team for the sole purpose of research, we are a rescue team, we rescue people not research."
Ludlow looked at Henry with a look of distaste, the man had not liked that answer it was apparent.
"Mr. Collins our research is very important, I am not saying the research is more important then our men in the field. But what I am saying is that it is vital, there could still be researchers alive at the base. We need you to bring them an the data back."
Henry did not like the way this man changed things up, this was rather turning into a man he did not like one bit. Henry could not deny the fact that there could still be researchers alive at the base, this alone stopped him from saying no out right.
"I want a complete dossier of every researcher on that post. I want a map of the Camp, and the area it is in I am sure this will be no problem?.."
Ludlow simply nodded.
"I will have what you require upon your departure, you will have time to read up on the situation as it will take some time to reach the Camps location. Am I assuming you will take the job?"
Henry wanted to just cuss the man out and say no but his job was to save human life and there could very well be researchers still alive and that he could not deny.
"Yes my team and I will take the assignment."
Henry stood up as he did not take Ludlow's hand he wanted to get out of this mans office before he punched his sniveling face. Grabbing his coat Henry reached into the pocket and pulled out a small wave radio and spoke into it.
"Meet me inside of the supply Depot twenty minutes. Debriefing will take place to location. Henry out"
Henry walked outside of the door as he threw his coat back on and pulled his goggles down. He exited the building feeling the cold of the arctic air once more.
