Akira, literally meaning, "Bright", was derived from the child's dazzling blue eyes. He was born into a family that consisted of a father that spent most of his time working in the military (More than likely the influence for Akira's blunt, no B.S. personality), a stay-at-home mother, and one older sister. With a birth defect rendering him blind, there was a constant air of pity surrounding both him and his family. However, this lack of vision had a rather interesting trade-off. Around the time Akira was learning to walk the walk and talk the talk, the toddler started developing the supernatural ability to hear the thoughts of others. This didn't become prominent until the age of six, when he started Kindergarten. It was safe to say Akira was quite an unsettling little boy when he demonstrated his new-found talent.
As he went through grade school, the young mind reader's general magic powers only intensified. Akira had invented a method of moving around and being aware of his surroundings without the aid of a cane or guide. He calls it, "Pulsing". Pulsing works off the principle of echolocation, but it uses magic instead of sound. Akira sends out a weak wave of mana in all directions, which then reflects off any surface it hits and returns to him. These shock-waves are extremely weak, and usually run undetected by all except Akira himself, but those with excellent magical skill (say, a teacher at Red Star) might be able to sense them. The pulses also travel fairly slow at a smooth 25mph. However, this causes one fatal weakness: speed. Should Akira exceed 25mph for any reason, his Pulsing becomes effectively scrambled due to the
Doppler effect. This inflicted the young man with a paralyzing phobia of vehicles of all kinds.
Once he got into middle school, his magic skill was only increasing, as Akira developed other magical skills like telepathy and telekinesis. However, one would say he was growing too fast for his own good. By the time he hit fourteen, his mind reading was out of control. Unlike before, Akira could no longer "shut off" his ability, forcing him to hear the thoughts of everyone that got within 500 meters of him. The constant noise nearly drove him insane, until his family saved up enough money to get him special
ear buds that suppressed his gift to a tolerable level. The next few years went by relatively uneventful, but Akira still unsettled his peers, for no secret or private matter was safe from him. He literally knew
everything about
everyone that gets within mind reading range. It was this ability, on top of his telepathic and telekinetic skills that got Akira invited to Red Star Academy, where he is now.
