After centuries of proper breeding and mutation, the Vampires have evolved to the point where sunlight doesn’t affect them as much as it used to. They simply tan easier than others, and burn even easier. Their trademarks remain as the fangs, red eyes and pale skin, but they have adapted to living in normal society well enough, although a few, like Sergei, choose to keep the hooded aristocratic attire. While possessing powerful regenerative abilities, Vampires cannot heal from burns which mar their skin, and are highly adverse to garlic and pure water, to the point where they would contaminate it with their own blood so that they can bathe or drink it.

Deep within the mists of Wallachia, Romania, there was a legend of vampires inhabiting an old castle. Of course, people paid no attention to it most of the time, but it remained that everyone who entered…never came out completely sane, if they came out at all. Those that survived told tales of floating orbs of blood moving within the castle, as well as pale, hooded figures chasing them through its hallways until they escaped. No-one believed them, but, nevertheless, a sign was erected warning people about the Dracul Castle. Only the occasional spirit hunter or self-proclaimed exorcist would ignore the warning and enter, only to never return.
When the existence of magic became known, the inhabitants of the castle exited to show themselves to the general populace. Calling themselves the descendents of the legendary Dracula, someone long thought to be a mere myth, those of the Dracul family announced their intent to live amongst the people with peace…which the plebeians of course denied wholeheartedly with torch and pitchfork. Being the extremely arrogant race that they were, the Draculs quickly dispatched anyone foolish enough to enter their castle grounds with little to no effort, or harvested them for their blood.
During this time, Dracul Haemomancy, or blood magic, entered a new phase of development, as the amount of test subjects increased. The Draculs became able to drain a victim from afar after infecting them with their own unique blood type (Henceforth known as V) as well as crystallizing the stuff into something akin to steel, albeit warm, pulsing steel that was slightly more brittle. The enhanced regeneration fo the Vampires means that they almost never drained themselves dry of blood, and even when they did, could recover by draining the blood of a nearby peasant. These skills also expanded to something that they called ‘the healing arts’. While this was useful in that they did keep some people alive…the complications were that they were essentially half-vampires now which would be shunned by the arrogant Dracul and humans alike, although on rare occasions, they would take in a half-breed.
Sergei is a 5th generation Dracul, and his bloodlust has devolved to the point where he can survive off of blood packs rather than draining it straight from the victim, although he is more than capable of doing so. Things have quietened down for the Dracul family, and the surrounding villages have even befriended the vampiric family, inviting them to festivals and other such events, while the Draculs protect them from various things such as other feral magical monsters, although they do it with disdain. His personality is typical of his family. Arrogant, aristocratic, yet somehow willing to help those in need with much gloating afterwards. Such is the life of a blue-blooded vampire to help the peasants where he could.
When he received the invitation the Red Star Academy, the whole family was surprised. Usually Vampires and their kind were seen in a hostile light, so this was a pleasasnt surprise. Seeing this as an opportunity to help them mesh with the rest of society, the Dracul family sent Sergei as a representative of their family, telling him to “play nice with the humans”..he had serious doubts about that, but as long as they didn’t run at him screaming with pitchforks, stakes and garlic, he’d be fine.
