Maira clapped politely as she watched Jynmi receive his pokemon. She now was very nervous, as she was sure her shy and insecure personality would grant her a weak pokemon. She swallowed hard as Proffesor Redwood continued, "Yes, congratulations are in order! Let's hope that you and Dratini have a very bright future together!" he said adn then turned around, looking at Maira.

"Now, we have one more recipient today. Maira would you like to come forward please?" He asked politely and Maira stepped forward nervously. She smiled as she sat in the chair. The proffesor looked at her, "Okay get ready. The machine is getting turned on right now," he said and turned it on once more.

Maira felt the machine hum and it examined her brain for the pokemon that best represented herself. She sat there, nervous wondering which pokemon she would receive. It seemed that she sat there forever, when in reality it was only for a minute or so. She heard a bell ring and the she smiled.

"Alright Maira, here you go," He said taking her pokeball and giving it to her. He walked her to the front of the stage, "And here we have Maira and her new pokemon Vulpix!" Maira just stood there, looking at the pokemon. Vulpix was a fire type pokemon. Maira smiled, she had a new pokemon, it just seemed all to be a fantasy to her.

She walked over to Jynmi, "I never thought I would get a Vulpix," She said, looking at him.

Jynmi nodded, without turning to his friend, because his attention was still on the pokeball in his hand. "I know what you mean. I wouldn't have thought for a second I would get Dratini. I mean what are the odds."

"Now then." The old man called to the crowd. "The ceremony for these two is complete. As custom dictates they'll have till today's end to get their affairs in order. Then they'll leave town, and cannot return for at least one week." Redwood smiled at the crowd. "Now don't worry for these children. Since I've been doing these ceremonies, not one child has been hurt in that time, and most don't come back for a week because their young, and eager to see the world so they forget about their home town." He took a bow and stepped aside. The crowd cheered.

Maira looked a little surprise, she didn't know that part of the plan. They couldn't come home for a week? Why did she not know this? Frowning she looked down at her pokeball, maybe if she trained the vulpix up a bit she could go for the gym leader challenge. She knew that is what most young trainers aspired to do and she felt that it was an interesting route for her to take.

Looking at Jynmi, she hooked the pokeball to her belt, "I think we should stick together,' She said, "We should head to the Pewter City. Brock is there, the first gym leader," She said and then looked down at her pokeball once more, "We would need training first though," She said and realized that was the longest sentence she had spoken all day.

Jynmi smiled at his friend, and patter her shoulder. "Don't worry about it." He said turning to see everyone leaving in a bit of a rush, as if they were too scared to say good bye. "We'll be fine since we're going to stick together. I mean, lots of others are fine and they always break up to go it on their own. Two heads are better than one, right?" The last of the crowd disappeared so it was just them, and Redwood.

The old man turned to them, smiling. "Well before you two go, I've got some gifts." He reached into his pocket and pulled out two pokedex, and three, pokeballs. "You can't really be trainers with these." He chuckled. "Now, you two should go on, and say your farewells and see you laters."

Maira nodded, looking at Jynmi, "Meet you in front of the lab in an hour?" She asked softly and waited for him to answer her. She wanted to say goodbye to her parents before she left. She couldn't just leave town without bedding farewell to her family. Oh, and she would need to grab her things from her room as well. Her backpack and potion that she had been given would come in handy. She thought of this as she looked at Jynmi, hoping he would agree to meet back in front of the lab in an hour's time.

"Yeah let's meet at the lab." Jynmi nodded, and headed off. "I'll see you in an hour." He waved off at his friend and headed around a corner. Once out of sight, he took in a deep breath, and hurried to meet his family.

***1 hour later***
Standing outside the lab, Jynmi stared down nervously at his watch. Was it fast or slow. He took a deep breath, and wiped at his eyes again to make sure there weren't any tears to be seen by his friend when she arrived. He hefted his heavy back pack and stared towards the setting sun, and the crowd waiting to wish them well just beneath it.

Maira ran back home, walking in slowly. Her parents awaited her, sitting at the dining room table as it seemed they did so often. She walked over to them, "Mom, Dad, I trust you saw the news?"
"We did dear, and we know that you are to go out into the world," Her mother said with a sad smile.
"We hope that you wear the proper running shoes," Her father joked and smiled at her.
She smiled back, "I'm going to miss you guys," She said softly and walked upstairs to retrieve her things. Before she left, she hugged and kissed her parents goodbye, and then walked out the door.

Maira walked to the lab, looking for Jynmi and seeing him up ahead, "Jynmi!" She called and ran after him. She caught up with him and then looked back to the town, "And to think we might not be back here for quite some time," She said quietly in sort of a sad voice. She looked at Jynmi, knowing that now, he was the only close friend she had.

Jynmi smiled and patter his friend on the shoulder. "Come on, now, it's not too bad. It'll only be a week. We've both, I think, been out of town for longer than that." He pointed to the group that had gathered to wish them well. "Come on. The sun's almost down. You know the rules. We've got to be out of here by sundown."

"A week is a piece of cake. We'll blink, and before we know it we'll be back." He started walking, heading towards the town's exit, but stopped after a few feet. "Unless." He said, hefting his pack and turning back to meet his friend. "You wanted to go for the gym challenge." He blinked a few times before continuing. "Did you want to go try for the badges?"

Maira thought about it, something she had given a lot of thought was the question just asked of her? Did she want to go for the gym challenge? She placed a finger on her chin thoughtfully, weighing both options, "Well, it would be interesting. But you must think..we would need some training before we can take on the first gym leader. Plus, I would need to catch another pokemon as fire is not effective against rock and Brock, the first gym leader, has all rock types," She said thinking still.

"But yeah I would like to try and go for the badges," She said after she was silent for a few moments thinking. She looked at the sunset and smiled, "Funny that just a week ago we never imagined doing something like this huh?"

"Yeah, but that's life. Its just one random turn and then another. Though, I like it that way. He nods to her. "Yeah I know what you mean. Dratini isn't exactly weak against rock or ground, but its not really strong against them either. I doubt it knows any water or grass moves, so I'll have to find a way to teach it one of them." He sighs. "Too bad we didn't get to grow up with any other pokemon trainers in the town. That would've been a big help right about now." Jynmi continued walking towards the town's exit. "But, there's two of us so we can train together, and work together to catch some pokemon that could be of assistance.

The crowd at the town's edge saw them comming, and started cheering and waving. "But whatever happens we have to get something done, because I'd hate to have such a big farewell and come back empty handed." He grinned.
