Hey, I've got an idea. I think it's got wings. Let me know what you think.
It's been centuries since Earth was abandoned in favor of man-made colonies built to house billions more than any planet could sustain. With each passing year, another colony's life support systems fail, and the future of humankind is more uncertain than ever before. A tremendous re-population effort is undertaken throughout the Milky Way - massive space stations known as Orbital Biodomes are constructed around potential new home planets. This is the story of Orbital Biodome Six.
Hundreds of men and women live in identical apartments, eating artificial food and drinking artificial drinks, floating above a toxic blue world. They're a Renewal Crew - planetary clean-up; cosmic level janitors. They train on a small craft orbiting a planet, adjust to the atmosphere, and deploy to the surface to rid it of infestations (local life), making a planet fit for human settlements.
Story opens on the drop day - the first scout teams will be deployed across the planet to review preselected starting points for colonization. What they find could mean a new beginning for humanity...or something else entirely.

Basically, players could all join up as one scout team, or head up an entire one of their own if they so choose. I'd GM, revealing stuff to each team along the way. We'd have a brief establishing period in orbit where I give each character/team a choice of drop points, brief everyone, then send them on their way. You'd all begin with the ability to contact each other and the station by radio, so even if you play separately you'll have a way to interact.
I'm looking to do a hard sci-fi story, so while there may be weird creatures and the like, there won't be any alien ghosts or space wars. These things tend to get very tense, so expect more scares than laser guns.
I prefer to flesh out character histories in-story, so character sheets will basically be simple personnel files - physical details, team position, training, etc.
For convenience's sake, I like to employ a simple item system in my RPs to reference things like ammunition count and anything else that might become scarce over time. I'll provide examples should this reach the OOC stage.

Sounds interesting. Count me in!
"And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: look on my works, ye mighty, and despair.'"
Cool! I think I could start this with one or two more people, since the setup allows for anyone to jump in later on.
EDIT: Actually, this is enough to at least get it going. I'll have an OOC post up in a few hours to brief everybody on what to expect. CS will be very barebones, because I prefer to build this up in-game.
