Her words sparked an interesting thought in Lucas’s mind. He didn’t have an answer to her question, and it got him thinking. What was it he really wanted? Was it an end he sought so valiantly after, or was the fun in the discovery? Lucas took an offered twizzler from Naxis with a pondered look. “I don’t know,” he said smiling. That was the answer, he didn’t know, and he liked not knowing what was next. The discovery of new incredible things was the fun of the world.

The air was cool and calm, sweet and new. Lucas looked across the landscape, admiring all parts of its glorious new beauty. He dug out some beef jerky from his own backpack. Delivering the salty, dry meat to his mouth he also offered Naxis some. “Well,” Lucas started, mouth chewing on jerky. “What do you want Nax? Here we are, if we were to ever to be caught we would already be in tons of trouble so there’s really nothing to lose anymore. What do you want to do?”

Naxis seemed to be relaxed as she enjoyed the cool grass. She lifted her gaze off to her right as she studied the landscape for a moment. " At the moment?" she bit her lip as she pondered this. "Well Its only natural to want to study the Mundanes for me," she breathed.

"Just imagine what they know and what they do for fun. Also, what youths our age are like. Are you not intrigued?" she turned and looked up at Lucas as she grabbed another Twizzler and stuck it in her mouth. "Dont you want to know and possibly be around them?" she smirked before ripping a piece of her candy from her mouth. What did the Mundanes her age think about?

“Be around them?” Lucas sparked up with abounding enthusiasm. “Yeah! Do you think they go to school like us? We should totally go to school.” Lucas paused slightly, catching himself. “Well, I never thought I’d say that.” Laughing a bit, Lucas jumped to his feet and looked outward toward the city. Leaning against the tree, he just smiled at it. The buildings were all so new and unfamiliar, the ultimate adventure.

“I feel so, small, you know?” Lucas cocked his head at Naxis seated on the ground. “I mean, we lived our whole lives underground, and the only things we ever knew about the Mundane’s world came from textbooks, media, or just other people’s words. Before today, I didn’t know for sure if this world truly existed. There’s just so much out there Nax. How can I know what’s real and what’s not?” Chewing up another piece of jerky, Lucas pondered all that he was seeing, trying to take it all in. What would that city behold?

It seemed she had sparked his interest now. Lucas was yammering on and on about humans and he seemed pretty content with it. "Its possible," she replied to his question about mundanes going to school with them. "then we can now make a discovery of what they are like," she laughed then placed another piece of Twizzler in her mouth.

After a mont of watching her friend Naxis stood up and smoothed out her shirt. "Alright lets go," she started toward the city before her. "We cannot just stand here dreaming when we have a world to enjoy before us. We could already be found out back at home,"

Lucas laughed and agreed, “yeah that’s a good point. My parents are probably already getting a punishment ready for ditching school again. If only they knew where we really were.” Lucas followed after Naxis. The dirt path led them down the hill through the forest of pine trees. The path was wide and beaten down like it had been well used before, but the invading grass along it showed it hadn’t been well traveled in long time. The mine must have been truly abandoned years ago, but the reason as to why was unknown.

The path curved and sloped slightly, without ever being too dangerously steep, and it took a generous fifteen minutes before much changed, which meant plenty of walking for Lucas and Naxis, though Lucas didn’t mind at all. Every step was another toward new beauty and adventure. Everything was different in the sunlight. Colors were fuller and brighter, and there were wonderful sounding whistles in the treetops from the alien birds of this surface world.

The dirt path eventually began to make its end. There at the bottom of the hill was a closed gate, meant to deter cars from making way up the road. Lucas approached the solid bar from behind and lifted a leg to straddle over it. On the other side was a diamond shaped metal sign painted yellow that read
‘Do Not Enter.’ Lucas looked it over and spoke to Naxis, “look, we’re even breaking the law in this world.” He laughed and finished his long stride over the bar. This would be the second warning sign to instruct them of their unwary trespassing’s

The asphalt road now lay before them, having two lanes of road that directed itself north and south. Lucas eyed down both directions giving his best adventure’s judgment for the correct direction. “Well, I think that city was this way.” His index finger pointed south along the road. The two had been walking a long time, and though the direction would take them to the large city known to the surface as Los Angeles, it would be a long tiring trip there.

Listening to Lucas talk about his parents only made Naxis more anxious. Yes, mom and dad would possibly be ready with a punishment when she returned. What if she didnt go back? The thought twisted in her mind as she kept moving. There was only one way to find out and before she did she needed to make sure this was all worth it. If she went back now she would have nothing to show.

Instead she would have had almost died, seen her best friend almost die and she met a human. This was not what she wanted at all. Going home with proof under her belt about humans behavior was much more worth getting grounded. She could win the Nobel Prize in discovery. Yes, for her age it would be tremendous to be able to show such things. Yes, she would go to jail but at least she would have found something worth going to jail for. She kept moving for what seemed like forever until shey got to a gate.

Lucas went first and even commented about how bad they were as children. Naxis just laughed and climbed after him. They would surely need to be careful with rules on the surface if they wanted to stay alive. After moving for a while again they reached a new road. "I hope your right or we will have a wonderful time trying to get unlost," she breathed then kept following.

Lucas smirked, “getting lost is the ultimate adventure, Nax.” The road let them travel along it, and they walked. Lucas teased, and with a deep, over dramatic voice continued, “two teens, lost on the surface, doomed to follow a road that never ends.” Wiggling his arms in the air, he complimented with ghost noises and whooshing winds about them. Chuckling he said, “you know, if they ever found us out, we’d probably end up being in a movie. That’d be pretty sweet.” The long road before them took its turn to make Lucas pause. “They’d probably leave this part out,” he said, sighing. “This is hella boring.” Lucas’s mind began to wander. His head went on a swivel, a cue to the boy’s appetite for action. It needed to be sated quick before he really got one of his infamous, brilliant ideas.

Another gust of wind blew over them. The grassy field on the east side of the road danced its tall limbs in the rushing air, flicking and resting and waving about the sea of yellow green. Lucas enjoyed its symphony as they walked along it, but it ultimately stopped. Lucas looked at Naxis, and back away, checking to see if she would notice. Another small breeze picked up about them and whooshed quietly over the grass nearby. Lucas smirked. “Hey Nax,” he said. “I bet I could blow harder than this air can.” He extended one hand out to the left, and beyond his palm, the air suddenly began to rush outward. It was hardly half as violent as the real thing, but Lucas had barely made an effort.

When Lucas started being a drama King Naxis laughed. "Oh yes, Im sure after a month of getting lost in the woods we would still think its an adventure," she spoke sarcastically. "plus, if they find our dead bodies they would be in funny poses and yours would still have a smile on it," she stated then kept walking. With every step she took it seemed endless.

They needed to find that city soon since Naxis could feel her feet throb with each step she took. Oh what she wouldnt give for a nice hot bath and a warm cushiony bed. "Definately boring," she breathed but kept moving. It was like she had no destination but her feet moved anyways. She wondered what Lucas would come up with next to pass the time or to change course.

Either way Naxis wanted to rest soon. After every swoosh of wind hit her Nax would close her eyes and try to find her happy place. Yes, all this was quite great and all but she was still not used to it. It was a pain how she felt the wind move passed her making her wonder if she brought extra lotion to help keep her skin smooth. After a bit she reached into her pocket and pulled out some chapstick and applied it to her dry lips. When Lucas talked about blowing the wind harder she lifted a brow.

"Whatever floats your boat," she breathed then watched as he tried to be as strong as the wind. Oddly enough he was not quite there. "Better luck next time," she stated then picked up her pace. They needed to hurry or their whole trip would be lost to walking in the middle of nowhere.

‘Better luck next time!?’ Lucas mentally frowned; the competitive tick snarled at him. He slowed down behind Naxis and was ready to show her what for. Smirking and breathing deeply, Lucas readied himself for a powerful gust to blow Naxis right off her feet. Prepped for a monstrous blow, Lucas was just about to unleash a powerful wind when a car sped beyond the two from behind, scaring the wind right out of Lucas. There was no blow from Lucas, rather a rush of wind from the passing white car.

“Ah!” Lucas yelled now catching back up to his friend. “These people are crazy! And-“ his voice trailed off as his eyes followed the car along the road. It led into the beginning of a small town, with a wooden greeting sign reading: “Welcome to Brisbee.” There was only one road leading through this little area, and it was surrounded by little wooden buildings housing various shops and restaurants. There were many people, of all sorts and sizes, out and about walking the sidewalks fencing the one road.
“Naxis, look.” Lucas said, as if Naxis hadn’t already seen this place before them. “There’s,” his voice trailed to a quiet whisper after a short pause allowing him to sidle up next to his friend. “Mundanes.”

When Lucas slowed down Naxis thought nothing of it. Possibly a bit hurt but he would get over it and focus on the task at hand. The VERY long task of finding that city they were headed to. She kept moving without a care in the world until she felt strong current of wind whoosh past her. Naxis jumped up in shock like a cat with the hairs on the back of her neck standing up and let out a yelp. She froze as she saw the the white car drive off away from them. "For sure," she breathed then lowered her guard a bit. She kept walking until she heard Lucas call her.

"What?" she turned and looked at him then turned around following his gaze. 'Mundanes'. That word made both fear and exitement rush up her body mixing in caos. She bit her lip and started to feel like backing out of the trip. Slowly she moved her feet backwards and kept her eyes on the town. "Thats not our destination," she breathed.
