Here's an idea. Let's roll dice to determine initial HP. Use D&D rules to determine the amount of damage done. If you run out of HP, then you die. Perhaps additional HP can be gained every ten posts?

Isn't that a bit unfair? After all, a brute isn't going to be beat by an insect due to mere luck? I think the initial idea, of the GM deciding is much more fair, although you made a good suggestion.
