    USS leibniz IC

As the Banner of the USS Leibniz is unveiled the assembled crowds of officials and crew members applaud.

“I am honored to command this fine vessel in the exploration of the Galaxy. My aim will be to father the Federation’s knowledge of the Galaxy and to bring security to those we find in need. Our mission will be one of peace, to bring new members into the Federation and to use their knowledge to bolster our own understanding of the universe. We will also put great effort into helping the lost crew of the USS Voyager home safely to their families and friends.” Finishing his short speech Captain Tylin turned to the Regional Commander. “Sir, all departments are ready and the ship is fully operational and ready to get underway! Request permission for departure?”

“Permission granted!” Admiral Whatley, the Regional Commander, said, “and may your sailing be swift and prosperous.”

After granting permission for departure the Admiral struck the bell and called the room to attention and all stand. “Ladies and Gentlemen: Starfleet Command presents the new ship in the fleet and of the Starfleet First Exploratory Fleet, the Akira-Class USS Leibniz, NCC-87361!”

The whole room applauded as the anthem of the United Federation of Planets began playing and the Captain and crew of the newly commissioned ship turned to face out the view port of the New Aberdeen Fleet Yard at Aldebaran to watch as a bottle of Champaign was broken against the side of the new ship.

“I now bring this ceremony to and end and dismiss the crew and her captain so they can board their ship and get underway.”

The crew turned to the front of the room again and saluted the Admiral, then turned and left the room lead by their Commanding Officers.

    *************

    *************

On board the new ship, Captain Tylin gave the order to depart and, once clear of the dock, stood up to address the bridge staff, “Welcome, this ship will become like a second home to most of you over the next few years so treat her accordingly. Our first orders are to make haste to Vulcan to pick up the Vulcan Ambassador and transport him to earth. We are then to make our way to Deep Space 5 to receive our General Mission Brief.” He lowered his voice to a normal level and continued, “ set coarse for Vulcan, Warp 8, Engage.” He sat down again as the ship jumped to warp, relaxing now that they were under way.

Lieutenant Goodspeed sets course then Says
”Aye, aye sir course set for Vulcan, Warp factor 8”
Her slender fingers drift across her controls as she suppresses the urge to giggle for joy.
In response to her input USS Leibniz gracefully pivoted in space till her bow faced Vulcan, Saval could have rammed the power controls fully forward but instead she slowly accelerated till the Warp read Eight.
Saval had reservations about visiting Vulcan but even those couldn't dampen her spirit, she only hoped she didn't have to go down to Vulcan for any reason.

Lieutenant Commander James Strange was on the bridge like everyone else was when the order was given to go to warp eight. He looks at the main view screen for a few moments, as they slowly picked up their speed, no matter how many times he saw this he still loved it.

Looking back to the control panel he was at, he looked over the security logs, making sure everything was in order up to this point and that everything was secure for now. He didn't want to let anything slip on their first trip out.

'Lieutenant James Michael Deadmarsh' the chief science officer thought to himself, considering the way that his rank sounded next to his name, thinking about the journey to Vulcan. The Leibniz could make it to Vulcan faster if they went over warp factor eight, but the Captain's orders were the Captain's orders, no James didn't bother saying anything. No doubt Captain Tylin had his reasons for choosing to not have the ship travel at its maximum speed. It wasn't for James to question, so he shrugged it off and kept thinking about what kind of things he could get up to as science officer while they we just running what basically ammounted to a taxi job.

"Captains Log Stardate 53063.73 (January 24, 2376, Time: 07:48 - Alpha shift)): We have been going steady now for almost a week and so far so good. No major incidents, the worst being a petty officer getting minor burn from his dinner. We are seventeen light years into the seventy seven light year first leg of our trip and I am considering testing the engines to full capacity to make sure they are working when we need them. Computer end log."

Captain Tylin stood up from his desk in his quarters and buttoned up his uniform. He left his rooms and made his way up one level to the bridge, taking the stairs instead of the turbo lift, might as well get a little exercise on the way.

Entering the bridge the first thing he seen was the star field in the view screen. It was amazing, and never got old. He took a brief walk around the stations and then took his seat in the centre of the room.

"Ok people, time for a engine test, Helm increase speed to warp 9.75 and hold for three hours then return us to warp 8." he turned to his display and opened the engine report screen to keep an eye on it himself. He knew the crew would be monitoring it but he liked to be involved in every aspect of the ships day to day running. "I also want all department heads to perform level three diagnostics on all major systems"

Saval was thought Insane by her mother's people the Vulcans simply because she embraced her emotions.
The Romulans on the other hand felt she was perfect because she was a creature of passion and they had tried three times to recruit her to their cause.
Star Fleet Intelligence had tried to recruit her to spy on the Romulans.
”What a mess” she thought to herself as she watched the stars before her shift spectral quality. Saval had somehow survived to make it here where she sat, at the control of a ship of the line, an Akiria, the Libby as she called her in her thoughts.
Within her Saval could hear the song of the surge, the tiny bacteria that shared her body.
Hearing the Captain's command Saval smiled as she briefly queried OPS before sliding the controls into the desired position
    ”Warp 9.75 Aye, aye Captain”
    She says confirming his orders
Libby responded like a cat turning in the wind the star field in the forward view changed tempo and spectral quality.
Beneath her Saval could feel the powerful drives thrumming till she reached 9.75 and the structural integrity fields stabilized.
This is what I was ment to do thought Saval as she began to feel the latent empathy of the bridge crew.

The first week had gone by without any real problems on his end as well. So far, his station was boring, finding time off shift to go to the armory and clean the weapons, do inspections, count, what have you. By the fifth day, this was even starting to go old. While on duty, he toyed with ideas, playing with current weapon platforms in a digital environment to tweak them or to see about making them simply better at what they are made for.

When the Captain arrived, he nodded at the orders, pulling up his own displays and punching in the commands. Despite having the ability to run the check with a simple button push, he liked putting the commands by hand, at least when he was able. He sent in his first report however, before anything else could was read over, the armory logs. Weapon condition, spare parts, and the like from his time within the armory and working on them.

Checking various systems and power grids, the Lieutenant didn't see any problems, though he was expecting there to be some issues with the ship travelling at the velocity that it was. Even something as small as power fluctuations on something like the shields, but that wasn't the case. He smiled, closing his analysis, and turned to address the Captain. "From what I can see, everything is running smoothly Captain. The Leibniz seems like a perfectly capable vessel at this time." James said, looking back at his screen and shifting though some of the information on screen for anything immediately important. There was nothing there though. Having been travelling for a week already, things were starting to get very dull. The novelty of being on a new ship was wearing off.

"Captains Log Stardate 53082.85 (January 31, 2376, Time: 07:45): Our warp test last week only took just over 3 hours off our trip to Vulcan, but it served it purpose to show me that the ship is in full working order. We should arrive at Vulcan on the 16th of February at around oh-two hundred hours."

"The crew are getting restless, I am aware that they are eager to get started on our more exciting mission of exploration and discovery, but I believe that they will behave in the professional manner expected of them by Starfleet, and myself. Computer end log."

Another morning on the bridge. He had to admit that he shared the feelings of his crew; no one liked carting ambassadors around known space. Just as the thought passed from his mind the ensign at comms spoke up

"Captain, a distress call is coming in from two light years ahead of us!"

"Speakers Ensign Kelso!" she said to the young Andorian.

The speakers crackled with static then a garbled message came through,

"Feder...tion shi... we are... need of urg... lp! Please resp...nd!"

"Unknown ship, what is your emergency?" he said, "Helm set a course, maximum warp! Security, prepare for possible hostilities! Sickbay, Prepare for unknown number of casualties!"

"We are... arship... mandiko... we are under attack by...." the message cut out.

    "Comm, get them back!"

Ensign Goodspeed watches the comms sensor sweep trying for a bearing on the distress signal. She calls up several preset maneuvers to be ready on her helm as she starts setting power controls for max warp.
    ”Aye, aye captain Warp 9.96”
Saval can feel the adrenaline surges passing through the bridge crew as their restless days come to an end.
Saval has herself been waiting for this day though perhaps not for the same reasons as others, she will now see wether her heart is made for battle.
