I'll let you know how much of a success it is when I try and draw something!
Dervish: I never really tried paintball, and got straight into airsoft. I think it was the camouflage and more realistic-looking guns that did it for me, as well the milsim aspect. Paintball here in the UK is often more of the 'speedball', consumer-friendly kind of game, as opposed to more intensive and more niche airsoft.
The equipment is expensive, you're right - though most good sites will have rental equipment you can use if you just want a taste. Shame there's not somewhere near you though!

Airsofter, eh? I'm a paintball man myself, been wanted to check airsoft out but I'm not sure where there's a field near where I live, and I can't afford to buy all new equipment, sadly. XD

I think there is probably fields about an hour 20-30 away from where I am? Problem is, I have no idea how to maintain an airsoft gun and it's fairly restricted in Canada, for a while there you could only get the ones with clear sides. That, and I don't have anything that uses batteries. I play almost entirely pump-action, and let me tell you, nothing beats the ergonomics of a good-quality paintball gun. I'm one of those rare guys who can appreciate both paintball and airsoft and can't figure out why youtube has to be a vile shithole of arguments over which is better... especially when the main thing the airsoft camp seems to come up with 'it's realistic, and our guns don't look like Star Wars guns!'. Which is fine, but not necessarily what paintball's about, you know? Both have their niches and points, and they require quite a bit of different skills to be good at. I imagine if I tried to do my usual tactics in airsoft I'd probably get murdered until I adapted, and it would be vice versa for airsoft players coming to paintball. I wouldn't be quick to write off speedball as 'consumer-friendly', per say. It's a very intense and dedicated sport that requires a lot of communication, planning, and team work to be good at. As well, the guys who play in leagues are fantastic athletes. It helps to look at it more like a sport like hockey, or soccer, or rugby where each player has a role to play and games are made or broken by how well a team plays together.
