With a beer stained t-shirt clinging to her skin and a damp rag in her hand, Kaysey sighed. She was finally finished with her long shift. She dropped the rag into the bin for rags to get washed and slowly walked to the back. In the break room behind the kitchen, she collapsed onto one of the chairs. Another gal was in back, hurriedly eating some dinner before she went back out onto the floor to continue serving. They smiled at one another, but said nothing, as one was in a hurry and the other was too tired to say anything. The other gal left after a few minutes, and Kay slowly got to her feet. She walked over to the computer sitting on a desk in the back corner and slide her time card across the slit in the keyboard. A little green light blinked, and then a pop up appeared, reading:
Have a good night, Kaysey.
She shivered a little bit. That always freaked her out, how it only said her first name. She took a deep breath and clicked the mouse over the exit on the pop up. Kay stood again and walked to her boss's office.
"Hey, Mister Cadwell? May I get my bag from the drawer?" She asked. Distractedly, he nodded, bent over some paperwork. He was a thin, balding man with beady blue eyes and a large nose. He had worry lines etched into his forehead and cheeks around his mouth, making it seem like he's perpetually frowning. When she approached his desk, he scooted out of the way on his fancy rolling chair, and she opened the bottom drawer. She moved a few purses out of the way and then grabbed hers, wriggling the slim bag out from under all the large bags. After she fetched that night's tips, she waved a farewell to the few other waitresses she could see and started walking home.
As she was walking, she hummed softly, a marching tune. She loved this tune, it always seemed to make her walk faster. Soon, she was at her apartment, and was digging through her purse for her keys.
"Now where did I put those doggone things?" She muttered, frowning at the depths of her bag. A faint jingle caught her attention and she fished them out from under the small notebook she kept for grocery lists. A smile crossed her face like quick silver, and she stuck the key in the lock and... Locked herself out of her own apartment. She narrowed her eyes.
"I could've sworn I locked it this mornin'." She crossed her arms, the key dangling from the lock. She shrugged and unlocked the door, slipping inside. She flicked the light on and closed her eyes, the light making her eyes see red, even though they were closed. She'd always loved doing that. It was like still seeing the light even though you couldn't really see anything. She felt a warm, soft body rubbing against her legs and she smiled.
"Heya, Chloe. How was your day?" She asked the large Maine Coon. Her fur was patches of white and what the person selling Chloe called "silver". It looked more like grey, but whatever made them happy was fine by her. The cat meowed a few times, and Kay imagined they were talking as she began walking towards the kitchen.
