    X-COM: The Unknown OOC Thread

    2015, 1st February, 1300hrs, 1st X-COM Headquarters, Briefing Room

Induction of X-COM Pioneer Operatives by Marshal MacArthur

Look alive, soldiers, scientists and service personnel. You are here today in this base by the recommendation of the alliance of your continent and the United Nations to serve the world! You may be wondering today why you were approached by men in black suits and ordered here without preliminary explanations. Your questions will be answered today.

Starting from December 2012, there has been a significant rise in the number of reports of strange lights in the sky over major population centres, and phenomenon unexplainable by conventional means- such as missing case files going unsolved, not necessarily with missing bodies, and not necessarily with bodies that are intact. There is now enough evidence to show in the form of both civilian and governmental surveillance media as well as artefacts that we… Are. Not. Alone.

Now if you think that this is just a hasty patchwork project put together by hysterical presidents all over the world, you ought to rethink that, ladies and gentlemen. Talks began as early as July 2013 about the formation of the then 1st IXIU or First International Extraterrestial Investigation Unit in the United Nations, but as said incidents kept mounting the idea expanded to include not just the world’s best private-eyes but also people of war, science and technology such as you lot.

Now, listen up, grunts and bookworms! Our objectives and missions. As world leaders have reasons to believe that these otherworldly beings have hostile intent, our goal would be to meet and destroy any alien incursions, no matter the size and scale, by any means necessary, no matter when and where on Earth it happens. We are expected to understand them like our wives and children. We are expected to learn how to kill them like those pesky roaches. However, we are also expected to first identify their intentions, and it is the world’s *forlorn* hope that we are misunderstanding the aliens.

As of now, you are defenders of the entire Earth and the human race, God forbid that we fail, for we are the best of the best and the only organisation specialising in aliens. Congratulations. Dismissed!

    ABOUT

X-COM is a roleplay in which roleplayers will fill the boots of a soldier drafted into the titular X-COM project. The roleplayer is just as much about the life of a soldier in X-COM as it is about fighting the aliens that necessitated the organisation. As such, they will feel as X-COM soldiers in the original games would have felt: mind-rending fear and nerve-wrecking nervousness as they encounter the unknown on the battlefield. With absolutely zero intelligence on what could be out, and with all the possibilities of the universe, the psychological aspect, needless to say, would be a huge part of the RP.

However, this roleplay will attempt to cover what would normally only be accessible if one were to construct stories around their soldiers in the original game: this roleplay would be just as much about the lives of the soldiers in X-COM, as was said before, and as such, would also concentrate on the society built as the best men and women of earth gathers together to fight a desperate, seemingly unwinnable war, and the politics and drama that ensues from it, the struggle and near-insanity of it all.

From the eyes of a soldier, expect to experience as well the grim and desperate environment surrounding the global theatre, as well as the enigma of alien technology, and new, strange human technologies that would emerge from it.

    GAMEPLAY

Roleplayers may post at their own pace and style to control their characters. They are also allowed control of NPCs that they created to help fill the world, if they found the opportunity to do so. However, due to the heavily consequential and grim nature of the roleplay, every action and details well thought out or negligible, will have consequences as well as benefits, and every character will no doubt differ not at all in this treatment from the next man, even if the next man is an NPC. As per roleplaying method 101, you may describe an action but not the consequence, especially against other roleplayer characters.

As GM, I will play as any and all characters friendly or otherwise that is in contact of the area. There may be a GMPC, depending on whether that character becomes prominent or not. The environment and events would be constructed by me though details can be left up to the player. Of course, roleplayers could affect environment and events in their own way. Suggestions are always welcome.

The format of my post would be as followed: Actions of named characters, then lesser NPCs, random events (such as a character’s gun jamming) to keep things spicy and finally important notices and big events would be described in a separate section. The latter would of course be events that could be felt by roleplayers and the information accessible to them immediately, if not easily (say via PDA, news bulletin, etc).
The roleplayer characters will start on a helipad in Afghanistan in a group of straggling soldiers who are some of the last to join X-COM, for one reason or another. They would soon meet their company commanders, and to board their Chinook for transportation to 1st XCOM.

    RULES

    - Suggestions are very welcome and you are welcome to suggest changes to my decision, but the GM’s ruling is final at the very end.

    - The character that you create, due to the nature of the RP, can be anywhere between a regular/typical soldier (I would even make allowances for lowly conscripts and recruits who happen to possess immense potential for some reason) to some Special Forces soldier who’s pretty much the epitome of modern warfare. However, you still need to keep things realistic and sane. I don’t want to see 16 year olds who attained the rank of colonel at 14 and veterans of several wars, is able to dual-wield and kick alien ass the moment he sees them. Keep their initial armaments and equipment realistic too. I don’t want to start seeing people sprinting around with helicopter chainguns on their hip and a laser katana in their hands. The GM has the right to request changes to your character or reject them outright.

    - No power-playing/god-modding, should there be an opportunity for it to occur.

    - No instant-deaths, and that includes NPCs, which also includes enemy NPCs. Consequences will be decided by GM based on certain criteria.

    - No puppeteering other characters, including NPC you’re not supposed to control (like NPCs who aren’t mind-controlled by you or NPCs that aren’t given to you)

    - Speaking of NPCs, you will only get to control those whom you created yourself and of those, only ones that is very prominent in your character’s life (example: wife and children, close fireteam buddy, girlfriend)

    - No speed-posting. At the most, two persons may react to each other for up to three posts per roleplayer. Also, double posting (triple posting unlikely) is only allowed if you happen to have two or more prominent characters and you need to organise.

    - The quality of each post should be of a typical advanced standard. Three paragraphs and above, with adequate explanations, descriptions and grammar.

    - This roleplay is inevitably M18 at the least with no limit on violence, swearing and such as things will be portrayed with absolute realism. As for sexual content, do keep it within acceptable boundaries (i.e: I don’t want to start seeing sexual scenes lasting an hour with all the intimate contents all over the place that would make a porn actor blush).

    - Disputes are to be settled in OOC, just try to be compromising and peaceful about it.

    - If you are unable to post for an extended period of time, do tell us and make arrangements so that the RP would not be bogged down. Should you fail to do so (as in disappear like a murder victim for a week or so), I may have to take control of your character and move him a bit.

    - IC and OOC posts and elements should be in the right threads.

    - Should there be any flaws in the rules the GM will fix them.

    ENLISTMENT

So this is where you create your character. Your character may literally come from anywhere in the world, as long as its Earth. Your character may come from any nations represented in the UN, or even outside the UN, such as North Korea, or some newly formed nation that has yet to gain the recognition of the UN- You just need to cook up a good story, such as maybe how North Korea has wised up after some aliens decided to terrorize one of their cities or something. Do note however that whatever you write about the world would change it in the way you made it out to be. Your character may come from countries that aren’t even supporting nations, as nations that aren’t supporting may still contribute in small ways (such as sending you) relative to funding and supporting nations.

Similarly, your character could come from any military organisation. Strictly, it doesn’t have to be military. It could be paramilitary, and it could even be law enforcement. XCOM’s needs are many and complex. As in the above, just come up with a good story, and of course, as XCOM hires the best of the best (at least on paper), do make sure your character’s at least ‘good’ at what he do.

Also, please do not take everything literally, such as literally signing the 4th part as some parts of the form are just for realism and decoration. Another example is: don’t literally scan and put up your birth certificates or something.

As the RP is in progress, the 'UFOPAEDIA', which is the traditional name, will be updated from time to time, containing plenty of background information that could be glimpsed.

Very interested in this, and filling out a character sheet as we speak. Which I might add, though it certainly gives a good feel for the serious nature of the roleplay despite the sci-fi setting some parts are particularly tedious.

The previous deployment, vocations DD/MM/YYYY format in particular.

That said, I'm nearly done my Finnish Demolitions Expert. Still some ways from completion though.

    ************************************************** *********EDIT*

Have something workable here, added the tried and true description rather than the 'other' section after the interests/hobbies section. It might take something away from the 'feel' of the whole set up (to which I've trimmed to the essentials by the way) but this is OOC after all. There are just some things that you wouldn't write about yourself on a form.

That being said, here is my revised character sheet

Thanks for joining. Hmm, interesting. I like your character alot. You've definitely thought him through. Sorry that it seems tedious at times though. For the rest of ya, feel free to budgetize your brainpower for the more important parts. You could always blow through the parts such as the DD/MM/YYYYs without so much effort hahaz.

One thing I need to comment on though is that your character seems to be ill-prepared for a long-term operation, having say, only 1 set of uniforms for each camouflage pattern and a single helmet. Should the equipment be damaged, the logistics to replace them would be a nightmare. Though of course, unless you're aiming to make Finland one of the more reluctant countries to participate in the XCOM project. It'd definitely give your character a bigger chance of dipping into XCOM's meagre armory faster though. Other than that, I love your attention to detail . At his current version I'd say he's acceptable, but if you wish to change him one way or another, you could of course .

I must say though, 2nd Lieutenant at 37 years old? I'm sure you have the backstory for it, but I can imagine why . Marshal MacArthur might not be happy with Finland though

I believe I'll wait for a minimum of 4 persons to start this out. I'll also be coming up with a GMPC in the end I suppose. Stay tuned.

EDIT: Also, Logrin, no military description/history?

2-3 RPs, waiting for my introduction IC on one. But I can manage another, i'll have a character up tomorrow.

EDIT: Which brings up a question.

Possible to have an Ex-Military Private Contractor 'Reinstated and Invited' into XCOM ?

Yes, it is entirely possible for the army of your choice to pull strings and pretty much get him in, as long as everything looks great on paper. Even newly graduated recruits/NCOs/Officers who were considered the best of their batch could get in with the right arrangements... :P

Basically, it's the effect of politics- countries may not follow the UN's instructions to the letter, but may try to deviate a little for certain reasons.

    Take your time .

Sorry about that, took the '5 sets of uniforms...etc.' bit as a maximum rather than minimum. Edited my original character sheet and added a section on History of Deployment. I also like the idea of being slightly understocked compared to some of the major world powers, as Finland is a non-NATO member of the European Union despite their willingness to send volenteers abroad for NATO and ISAF peacekeeping missions.
