The name was me trying to creating fantasy name that sounded somewhat Arabesque. In her native lands it was pronounced Ahss-ah'allie-yah, breathily, with a bit of a hiss to the "ss" and a momentary pause in the middle where the apostrophe is.
Her full name at the time was Assallya min Alkiel, quite literally meaning Assallya, Slave of Alkiel.
When she moved north out of Calimport, up the sword coast and into Waterdeep and the Western Heartlands she found that people had trouble with her name and started pronouncing it "Ass-al-yah" Literally, "Ass" as in your buttocks, "al" like the short form or Alfred. She also started using her original surname again, that of Kressair.
