Characterzation (And seperating yourself from it)

This is a thread involving how you characterize yourself and make yourself different from your characters.

How do some people do it? Or are people more likely to type out their own personalities under a different name?

If you can characterize totally different personalities, how do you set yourself up to make that possible? How do you prevent from switching halfway through? Do you separate your mind into different zones or something?

Hmmm. Reading books with characters that have similar personalities to the ones I want to describe helps me characterize different personalities. You start learning the words and ways to do it, and it becomes easier. You could also always watch television or any other media that has a character similar to the one you want to describe, to get a feeling of how they would react in different situations.

    Hmmm.... good idea.

But do you think a lot of people simply RP themselves out in a different skin?

Yes, it's rather easier, I think.

Just drop yourself into an RP with cool abilities and skills that you otherwise don't have.

Hmm... So apparently I'm not the only one with a problem like this.

Curiously, do you tend to do this when you play the opposite gender?

    Short answer. Yes.

My opinion is that you can never roleplay someone or something without having your own subconscious perception thrown into it. It's like trying to roleplay a martial artist without knowing anything about marital arts. You can only emulate what you've seen or watched someone do. You won't know the proper stances. Won't know whether they can grab you or hit you from a certain distance. Won't know how fast a person can toss a jab or if you can react in time.

You can only roleplay that character to the best of your knowledge, even if its not truly what a martial artist would do in those situations.

Nope, but I do it when I play males. One of my best friends actually noticed that and said, "So the character is you then?"

    >> I can quite easily play characters that are nothing like me... and, a lot of them aren't... is it that uncommon to be able to do such things?

After all, the whole point of "roleplaying" is to be someone you're not, isn't it?

Yes, but many peoples opinions and acts carry no wieght.

For instance, since most of the players here are pro gay, could you play a character who believed that being gay was bad without being so outspoken about it that it would make him seem stupid?

Could you give out the reason that most of them use?
