*phew* Sorry for the wait. I got lazy somewhere around Yanna's history, so let me know if I need to fix that.
Also, they are both carrying spelled items. Nothing too special--no Elder Wands or anything (HEYOO)--but lemme know if that doesn't fly.
Vidae [veh-DAY] (from Latin 'videre -- to see'. No known surname. Goes by Dae.
Birthplace unknown. Earliest coherent memories of the foothills just west of Jardet. Begins her journey just outside of Barasid.
Appears to be physically about four or five years of age, though no one, including herself, actually knows. There is some logical discontinuity, as she can clearly remember the last three years of her life, but is vaguely aware of being older than two prior to these memories (see History for clarification).
For the most part, Vidae is a child, and enjoys such childish pursuits as climbing trees, playing with bugs, exploring various nooks and crannies, stealing sweets, disappearing when your back is turned, and poking dead things with sticks. While adults have taken advantage of her talents in the past, she does not consider her gift to be a ‘profession’ and indeed probably does not know what the word means.
Her favorite thing to do is find kindling for the fires Yanna (see profile) lights at night. She also enjoys playing in the mud and rain. Yanna hates this.
As a child (who fears violence), Dae doesn’t carry much in the way of weaponry. Yanna purchased a small silver dagger for her, though Dae has never used it for anything other than dissecting earthworms, and would probably be very ineffective in hand-to-hand combat.
Dae carries an amethyst pendant which matches exactly the color of her eyes, and while she cannot remember its origins, she has learned to use it to focus her power (see below). It is spelled to hold small amounts of magical energy, meaning that she can siphon off some visions when premonitions become overwhelming, and, with careful extraction ‘rewatch’ them later (though clarity of said vision fades with time, and depending on length, will become entirely watchable within twenty-four hours of storage). The pendant glows when imbued with energy, and also serves as a makeshift nightlight. She wears it on a silver chain around her neck.
She also carries a small wooden whistle with her, a gift from a tinkerer she met in a forest. “Because a child like you should be able to call for help,” he’d said. Yanna lets her keep it, partly for those moments when she is away from the child, but mostly because it is a safety blanket. In truth, Dae uses it mostly to express discontent, as in -whistle- No, I don’t want to eat this.
Finally, she has a travel cloak, which doubles as a blanket for the frequent nights she spends outdoors with Yanna. She has forgotten what color it used to be.
Magic Specialties (if any):
Likely the product of a great deal of heartbreak and intermarriage between humans and half-elves, Dae is human in every aspect save for two: the color of her eyes, and her penchant for precognition.
While this is the only magic she has ever been able to wield, she does so with an impressive amount of skill and intuition for a child her age. She numbers among the greatest clairvoyants in history, though her power is largely uncontrolled and occasionally runs rampant. Her gift most frequently presents itself in the form of dreams or snippets of minor premonition during the day, though this tends to be simply a ‘gut feeling’—Dae has literally been ill at the outset of a poor outcome.
On occasion, though, should all the correct circumstances align, Dae will be overcome with a powerful vision, in which she is able to see multiple courses of present and future at once. This happens only rarely, and is usually more than the girl can handle (hence the requisite focusing power of the amethyst).
Though her power is largely unfocused, Dae is slowly (very slowly) learning to control it. For example, in recent times, she has been able to do such minor things as decide whether a plant is poisonous our not, simply by looking for potential outcomes should it be consumed. When not focusing, as previously stated, Dae is usually just presented with a general positive or negative feeling toward any given option.
Vidae is alarmingly manipulative for one so small. Though she is only four years old, she is very precocious and knows exactly how to use her shortcomings (namely, her age and height—no pun intended) to her benefit.
She is an extraordinarily efficient pickpocket and spy, her size and natural silence lending her an uncanny stealth. When in busy market squares and bazaars, people rarely watch for the somber four-year-old to rob them blind—more often than not, a few well placed pouts will have any stranger handing over food, clothing, and currency. She is also fairly intuitive, able to read people very soon after meeting them, and sense whether their intentions are harmful or beneficial to herself and others.
Mute from a young age, Vidae has mastered the ability to communicate via body language, and has even developed a complex system of sign language for use between herself and Yanna (though around strangers, she generally limits herself to nodding or shaking her head, or shrugging). Yanna is also teaching the girl to read and write, particularly useful when Dae is trying to convey one of her more complex visions.
Finally, she is adept at the usage and harvesting of medicinal herbs. Neither Dae nor Yanna can remember where she picked up this skill, but both have become reliant upon it.
Between her inability (or unwillingness) to speak, and her eerie precociousness, Dae has a tendency to make uncomfortable those around her. She communicates (with strangers) almost exclusively by a single nod or shake of the head, or else just a wide-eyed stare. She rarely smiles, and almost never laughs, and while she is not necessarily shy, certain events in her past have made her wary of most people.
When frightened (another rare happenstance, as she can usually sense danger well before it occurs), she simply shuts down, playing well the part of shocked child.
But beneath all this, there is a plucky, curious, headstrong four-year-old, capable of a wide range of emotions, from giggling child to stubborn toddler. She is fiercely loyal to Yanna, and cannot abide seeing people in pain.
Dae is about three feet tall and weighs a little over thirty pounds. Her hair falls in untamable curls to the small of her back and is roughly the color of pitch. Her skin is pale and almost eerily unblemished. Her features are entirely unremarkable, save for the vibrant purple of her eyes.
Character History:Pet Type (if any):
There was a time before the Dark.
She knows this because she has had the amulet longer than she can recall, and she sees things sometimes she knows aren’t going to happen, because they already have. Sometimes, she hears voices, feels hands, gentle hands, not hurting ones. There is a song, too, a lullaby she wishes she could remember. There is screaming, too, and then the before turns into the Dark.
There was a time before the Dark. She wants to go there.
There are times after the Dark, too. Those are not so bad. In fact, she quite likes those times. These are times she spends with Yanna, two adventurers going from one town to the next, sleeping under the stars, and stealing from men—but only when Yanna says its okay. And sometimes even when she doesn’t, but that’s a secret. She found Yanna not long after the Dark, and Yanna has been teaching her how to read, and build fires, and she has been teaching Yanna about what she remembers from the Dark.
She does not like to remember the Dark, but sometimes, she can’t help it.
There were bad people in the Dark, people who hurt her, they said, because she was special. Because sometimes she had dreams that came true. It had started when she made a man stop before crossing a bridge. She didn’t remember how or when she’d gotten there—that was at the very edge of the Dark and the before-the-Dark—but she knew that when the man and his horse approached the old wooden bridge that went over the fast-moving water, something bad would happen. She felt it in her tummy, and she got sick, and she went to the man and told him not to cross.
The man pushed her away, and when she fell and screamed, his horse spooked and ran across the bridge without him. The horse had only gotten a three hooves onto the bridge before it collapsed, and the horse was borne away on white water, screaming.
That made her sad, but before she could do anything about it, the man turned to her with a funny look in his eyes. He said something about coming home with him. She’d told him no, and then everything went back.
The man had taken her to the Dark where he and his friends learned that they could make her see things that hadn’t happened if they hurt or scared her. They would make her eat bitter tasting leaves that would make her very sick and fall asleep for a long time. She would have nightmares that sometimes came true, and were sometimes just nightmares. If she tried to tell them she didn’t want to look any more, they yelled at her, and hit her, or locked her in small, dark spaces. She learned that the village was a bad place, where bad things happened. Mostly, people used her to look for these bad things.
She saw a lot of women have awful things done to them. She saw a lot of men and children her own age and younger killed.
She spent a long time in the Dark. She forgot how to speak in the Dark.
One day, she had a dream of a fire. Lots of people died in the fire, but she saw herself escaping. For the first time ever, she decided to lie about what she saw. She didn’t tell the bad people about the fire, and they didn’t stop it. When it came, she ran.
She’s been running ever since, but it’s not as scary with Yanna.
Now, she and Yanna are running again, maybe running toward the Dark, but, Yanna says, they are running away from something Yanna calls war.
Kiyanna [kee-YAW-nuh] Snowbane. Goes by Yanna.
Shifter – Wolf.
Home: Born and raised in Vergollde, though she spent a great deal of her life in Rolandis. Begins her journey just outside of Barasid.
Yanna was a jack-of-all-trades prior to meeting Dae, doing everything from running messages between lords and nobles, to serving at the local taverns, to, more recently, hiring herself out for caravan protection from bandits. She learned archery at her father’s knee from a very young age, beginning with a handcrafted bow, carven to fit the specifications of a two-foot elfin girl [more on that in the History section].
She is somewhat skilled in a variety of things, including reading and writing, cooking, and basic bartering. She is also a remarkably talented singer, though she would sooner skin a person than share this piece of information.
Yanna prides herself on being able to drink a tankard of ale faster than any man in Honara, but if she’s chosen to share that with you, it likely because she’s planning to kill you. In a tavern.
Spelled quiver (and arrows)
Arrows placed in the quiver have a higher chance of striking the desired target and will fly up to twice as far as standard arrows. Arrows stored in quiver for longer amounts of time become more accurate, but never increase shooter’s accuracy beyond 30% of what the shooter can do themselves. Furthermore, manmade (as opposed to elf-made) arrows store much less magic, and can only be ‘recharged’ a finite number of times.Moonstone dagger
A namesday gift from her mother, and one of her most treasured items.
Yanna tries to travel lightly as she can carry very little in her wolf form, which she prefers when entering unfamiliar territory. She has a travel cloak, and a small woven pouch full of coins and medicinal herbs, a pair of pewter-and-moonstone gauntlets, and a small, silver mirror of significant, but unknown, emotional value. She can sometimes be found staring fondly into it. Some view this as vanity. Yanna ignores them.
Magic Specialties (if any):
As previously stated, Yanna has some minor skills in several things, as opposed to great skill in any one thing (with the exception of archery, in which she excels). In addition to some ability in trade, bartering, and literacy, she is a talented singer—something very few know about her. She is also adept at hunting and tracking, though that comes with her skill in archery. Finally, what she lacks in hand-to-hand combat ability, she makes up in tenacity and strength in her wolf form.
It is no accident Yanna’s Shifter form is that of a wolf. A natural loner, Yanna is cold and aloof, and almost murderously aggressive should someone try and breach her ‘personal space’. She quite literally ran away from home at a relatively young age after killing her older brother (see History), and has since become practiced in the arts of cynicism and independence, and is generally trusting of no man. She is driven by an intense desire to prove her ability to survive on her own (somewhat thwarted by the fact that she travels with a child), and also, more subtly, a desire for acceptance, though even she is unaware of this.
She does, however, have a soft spot for the weak or oppressed, and should she grow close to someone, will fight to death for them.
[1. Yeah, yeah, it’s Storm. I’m a comic fan, so sue me. 2. Like this, but with…pointy ears.]
Yanna is a tall(ish), slender girl, standing wiry, yet strong, at a respectable 5’5”. Though she is darker skinned than most of her brethren, her hair is a perfect and pristine white and can most often be spotted being a nuisance and dangling in her face. She has a number of small, noticeable scars on her hands and wrists from years with her bow, and a star-shaped birthmark in the inside of her left wrist. In her wolf form, she is completely white, and just slightly larger than the average alpha.
Character History:Pet Type (if any):
The younger of two children (and only daughter) of the Captain of the Guard for a Vergollde nobleman, Yanna learned ferocity at a young age. Her father taught her the art of the bow, and her older brother trained her to use it. She was a natural, and soon began training with the men of the guard, for fun, if naught else. Then a proud and headstrong girl, she would boast with the older men that they need only ‘pick a star in the night sky’ and she would ‘shoot it down for them’. They took her teasing well enough in stride, though her father warned her against cockiness.
She was close to her family, in particular her mother, who was famed in Vergollde for the beauty of her face and voice. When Yanna was not training with her father (she had plans for becoming the next Captain of the Guard when he passed), Yanna was with her mother, Therealle, just basking in their company.
She even got on with her brother…until her skills with a bow and arrow began to overtake his own. When the other men in the guard began to tease that his younger sister would one day command him, Rhakyr grew bitter and distant. He began venturing to local human towns and drinking with the men there, simply because his elfin metabolism allowed him to drink those men under the table (a regrettable trait he would unknowingly pass on to his younger sister). One night, he was returning home, drunk for the first time, and ran into Yanna.
It was well known there was a minor feud forming between the two prideful siblings, so when Yanna teased her brother about stumbling on his feet—unusual for a graceful elf, particularly one as skilled as Rhakyr—he became angry and lunged to attack her. Sober, Yanna only moved out of his way, though she was angry now as well, and foolishly let her tongue get the better of her. Shamed, Rhakyr went on his way, and Yanna followed, intent on seeing him home.
But there was a young girl in his path who had seen the whole thing. She meant no harm, but Yanna’s brother was drunk and angry, and struck the girl to the ground, planning to take her and restore his man hood. Yanna Shifted and killed him.
Horrified by what she had done, she fled Vergollde, taking very little with her, and went to Rolandis to continue training with her bow. Much of her life since then has been dedicated to protecting the weak…and atoning for her sins against her own kin. She does not know what has become of her mother and father, though she misses them greatly.
She came upon Dae in a trading square just over a year ago after catching the girl trying to steal from her coin purse. The two soon recognized each other as what they were, and have been inseparable ever since.
