At an early age Katashi (Shi to friends) had high expectations in life. He had lived farther away from home in a private school starting when he was five. It provided room and board, meaning that Katashi only saw home on the weekends. He cherished the time spent with his younger sister and doted on her when he was at home, but he never had enough time to really build a relatoinship with her. (It was expected for him to take over his fathers portion of the company when his father grew too old to maintain it, and he needed a decent education to do this.) However when he turned 14 their family was forced out of Japan in shame. Ao's brother had been slowly taking over assets and had isolated Ao, Shi's father's portion of the company. They were forced to use the last of the money left to just their family, in this case Katashi's college fund, in order to flee the country quickly before their company debts caught them. Katashi was shocked as anyone at their sudden expulsion. His father took on janitorial duties in America, and that was it. Katashi spent only three years in highschool before graduating. By the second he was working part time. He could tell his father was struggling, and started paying all he had to his mother to the side, lying to his father and telling him that he was saving for college. Having reached seventeen, Katashi now worked a night shift. His father was having more incidents at work and only with their combined incomes were they managing to keep afloat. His grades were the only thing he could cling to, and his family just stopped seeing him. Either he was at school, sleeping, or working. He turned eighteen and just left. A scholarship was the last peice of luck he had hoped for, and he had gotten it, a loan later he was in college.
His life in college was no easier however, Katashi focused on plumbing, basic electrics, and a degree as an automechanic. Following this he worked most of his time outside of class in a automobile repair shop. Everything he had went for college and towards home. He just continued to add money to his Amaya's bank account, as he no longer trusted his father with any type of currency. Just three years later he had his own apartment and a steady automechanics job, paycheck augmented by plumbing and electrical work where he could get it. Katashi lived in partial shame though, he had forsaken his family. He couldn't face it and instead tried to pay it off with a constant stream of money towards his family. It never seemed to help his feelings.
Personality: Katashi hasn't had a really happy last few years and is slightly unstable emotionally. That said, he is often really cheerful, though not exactly happy. Shi is quick to smile, witty, hardworking, and has a rather steady personality when it comes to work. (One reason, combined with luck, that he made it to college at all.)
Power(s): Katashi never developed any powers after the fall. However he does possess his skills as a plumber/electrician/mechanic, which he has often thought good enough, considering the state of the world.
Limitations: Well, he is an average person, but one big problem with being a mechanic in a world like this is supplies. To fix a car you need parts, and for parts you need factories. Luckily, a lot of supplies are sitting out on the streets... with the walkers... and unluckily, some things just arn't replaceable.

Massive mountains to the east with all roads through clogged by traffic and walkers. Utah's mountains are a pretty good barrier. We would probably end up having to go either north or south around them. South could involve some stuff and the grand canyon, north maybe involving some dastardly forests and such. Remember, the geography of the united states can be bland in between, but terrain is an issue when a lot of the roads closer to the coasts are blocked by traffic, and large cities are now are scoured by hordes undead. Food for thought.
