Feel a sense of national unity. For w/e the disagreements are, people like to feel like there's an issue over which they can all come together.

I'm just disappointed we're whitewashing the real issues having to do with 9/11, like interventionism. Hopefully someday it can be used to discuss it, since it's been an excuse for many bad decisions.

Eh, that national unity thing really only lasted a couple years. Now it's just business as usual with one more thing for people to point to and be like "omg muslims hate our freedoms! let's attack!!!!!!!" The unity thing was cool when it first happened, it's nice for a country to feel united, but then we used it to go attack Afghanistan because Dubya and Co. were a bunch of fucking retards.

I agree that it should be used to discuss real issues though. If that were the case I would have no problem with people talking about 9/11, since it would be of some use. But this? All this "NEVAR 4GET!!" "DAMN DIRTY MUSLIMS GOTTA PAY!" sort of shit? Fuck that. That's what makes me dislike it and instead mock 9/11 (as shown with my now locked thread about it), because others have already made such a mockery of it in a much worse way that I don't feel bad about cracking jokes.

It's already become a worthless pile of faux-patriotic, xenophobic bullshit, so I mock it and wish people would just shut the fuck up.
