Wow - see I thought I had a fairly in depth knowledge of weaponry from games and things - but this conversation is like 'whoosh!' Right over my head

I like the FAL? single shot rifle? Famas is pretty nice too? I will get a post up today too

I'm always stunned by how much more in-depth peoples' conversations can get than my own knowledge xP
I'm running a tank-based game at the moment, and some peoples' knowledge of the subject scares me. It's the same when I was in a 'realistic' mecha-based game. I ended up leaving because it was to anally-retentive to actually get anywhere. People spent too much time squabbling over what was and wasn't acceptably 'balanced' or 'realistic' in a game about giant humanoid robots, to actually get on with posting in character.

The FAL is a nice rifle - it's impressive as well, in that it was originally designed in the '50's and there are still various versions of it in production and use. Like the G3 as well, there's loads of upgrades and modifications that it keep it still pretty current. I think there's a select-fire version too.
When the UK armed forces used to use the FAL, in the locally produced version called the SLR (Self-loading rifle), it was only semi-auto. British troops found a way to modify them to fire full-auto using a paperclip xD needless to say, the process was very frowned upon.
I used to strongly dislike the FAMAS, but that's due to airsoft rather than anything based in the real-world. Most UK airsoft sites used to use FAMAS rifles as rental guns, and due to the years of hard use they'd seen, and little care, they were very unreliable, inaccurate, and had a tendency to fall apart.
I've heard that the real FAMAS is actually pretty good though.

I don't like being too technically specific about anything. As long as it's obviously impossible in technical terms, I'm cool with it. Even more so with firearms. I'm hesitant to say what firearms are good and what are not because, well, all guns, airsoft included, are illegal here. That said, it shouldn't be a surprise that I like the AK series of guns. Reliable and pretty much nigh indestructible, that's a weapon I'd like to have with me in just about any occasion. The SMLE (All versions) is a close second, but that's mainly because of the 'mad minute' stories. I found that to be so awesome.

Old guns (Pre-1900) are still among my favorites.

My knowledge is really only for the post-WW2 era of military equipment and firearms, and is from the fact I have a lot of curiosity about things. I love to read, and I also write (as an amateur), and prefer to do research about what I'm writing.
I play a lot of table-top and online RP's, so I usually try to be fairly specific about what my character does, and I try and keep things relatively realistic, but at the same time allow for some things that are a bit 'larger than life', as after all, what's the point of playing fiction if you can't do a few things that are a bit spectacular?

I have no experience with real guns, as I've never had the opportunity. I don't claim my airsoft experience to be anything near realistic, as it's a hobby. However, one day I'd like to visit somewhere where I can shoot some real guns off for fun.
I don't know much about the absolute specifics of of everything like range, tolerances, reliability, and such, but I'm always willing to bow to superior knowledge. However, I will always stick by what's appropriate for drama and excitement over the reality of things.

Awesome. I write as a hobby as well. I don't like things becoming too unrealistic, but...Sometimes I bend the rules because that scene is just too damn awesome to pass up. XD And come on, when you're doing a steampunk story, I don't think technological realism is going to be up there as a major requirement. If it was, I'd be raving about how it's impossible to make a flying vehicle that runs on a steam engine rather than writing anything at all.

I'd really like to just play airsoft one day (Considering of going overseas for university once I'm done with national service, so I may get my chance yet). I'm going to get my chance to shoot a real rifle in...A year and a half, two years more at most. I tend to research about the various traits and capabilities of any weapon before I work them into a story or RP.

I tend to write sci-fi stories and ones set mostly in the modern day or near-future, so a lot of the technology involved is simply taking what exists, or is in development and imagining how that could develop further. As many of my works tend to involve new technologies from alien or other sources, I try and keep them consistent and at a level that makes the story work. So no unrealistic as such, but trying to keep things consistent, so they make sense within the setting, and have realistic limitations and flaws. That makes things realistic, in my opinion. I like the idea of steampunk too, though I don't think my imagination is wired up quite well enough to write it. As I said, my specialty is in other areas. My stuff tends to feature a lot of aircraft, as they're my big passion.

I hope you do get the chance to airsoft some day - it's a lot of fun. A lot of people I often play with are ex-services, or have done some training of some kind themselves. And I hope your national service is okay too. An ex-partner of a friend of mine was from Cyprus on the Greek side, so he had to do national service there, and he had plenty of interesting stories from his time.
I'm the same when it comes to research too - I look things up to try and find out any particular distinctive characteristics about that device or weapon, so that it has a bit more authenticity to what I'm writing in a story or RP.

With me, I find a good enthusiasm for history, geography, and all-round weaponry as well. I have kept the weaponry realistic, but at least to an extent where we can all have a firm base of knowledge. I'm not expecting everyone to know about undergassing, and overgassing weaponry to change a fire-rate, not to mention the varieties of other things you can do to abuse them to shit.

With me, I really would like to do airsoft myself- a specific mate of mine said that I would really enjoy it, and that I should come down with him to do it sometime. I think that with my RP style, I really like military- style combat, but I do have a few funny niches inside of that that I like to RP sometimes. I really like doing near-future RP, and I think Alternate History also appeals to me. I think that 1x1 RPs are my favorite- and this being one of the first group RPs I've pulled off as a massive success, I can say that it's going really well. I think that I stuck to the ideals of having a MOH-style thought to it, but I have been influenced by other video games (Battlefield being one that I actively play and like), my own previous knowledge, and any other ideas that you've thrown at me (along with a few films, which I guess help me with ideas on how to flesh out the psychology of Jan's character in further addition). However, I would say that I really have tried to keep a consistent and believable world- I know that there will be moments which chances are, Special Forces teams won't do- yet I don't want to make this as realistic as say, Operation Flashpoint. It's good, don't get me wrong, but I'd feel like a bit of a killjoy if that was what each of our missions were. I want this to be authentic- believable, in the sense that you feel immersed in the world your character's in, and that it makes sense, rather than being a constant clusterfuck like COD. Don't get me wrong here- there's action, and when it comes to it, it really hits, making for a genuinely epic moment that really entices you and forces your character to react. I want it to be that your character is really feeling, doing and fighting the war on terror with a genuine reason, and a soul inside the soldier that you have. Rather than just killing lots of people, because, I don't know, it's enjoyable- you do it because it's kill or be killed- and you have to, because they're between you and the objective. I guess that Pakistan was pulled off extremely well- I'm so glad you reacted to it in the way you did, and wanted it to come. Turkey will be back to the regular combat we do- but I think it will make for some good stealth to be pulled off, along with the fact that we're getting in a HALO jump (which I tell you, I really wanted to see in this RP). I think that with the general plot I have in mind, I have thought a lot on what will be going on. Copenhagen is a mere two weeks away after Turkey- and despite that sounding like a lot of time, it's only a matter of weeks between the team fighting in a Afghani/Pakistani valley, and on the streets of a snowed-over Copenhagen fighting an insurgency. Don't get me wrong- I know that is pushing it, but I genuinely think that it will be a really enticing ride till then- and possibly after that, we could carry on.

Agreed. Consistency is important when it comes to a story. If you say A is Banana in your story, then goddammit, you'd better stick with that convention, even if it's stupid. Steampunk isn't that hard to write, though I find myself having to suspend my own disbelief in order to write about steam-powered airships. I write sci-fi as well, but it leans more towards a space opera (More on characters, less on tech) cause my technobabble skills, as of now, suck. I like writing about aircraft as well, since I love planes (or anything that flies, for that matter), and I'm studying aerospace engineering. It feels good being able to use what I've learned in the classroom to write a story. Even more so than when I do some hands on work.

I hope I get to airsoft some day as well. I know a place here that has a field, but it's really expensive since it's the only place you can use airsoft guns here. Paintball is a close second, but the price problem is still there. My national service should be fine. It's three months of basic, during which the worse I can expect is just deployment to Brunei for jungle warfare training. Once those three months are over, I just have to serve a year and nine months in whichever vocation I end up in.

Y'know, I only heard about the undergassing and overgassing stuff when I played Ghost Recon: Future Warrior. XD

As for games...Right now I'm playing Black Ops 2, but mainly in zombie mode. I played Flashpoint, but if you want a realistic game, try the Red Orchestra series. It feels close to life. What helps is that you don't have an ammo counter, so checking your ammo means that your character has to either remove the mag to weigh it (For magazine fed weapons), pull the bolt back to check (For the AT rifles and bolt action rifles) or open the feed tray to check (In the case of a MG34 gunner). It takes wind and distance into account as well. Really good game, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Speaking of games, I don't suppose anyone here plays Wargame: European Escalation? It's a great Cold War era strategy game, but the multiplayer could do with some repopulating. =\

Looking forward to what you've got planned for us, KK. Sounds like it's going to be one hell of an adventure.

I think there was an "OH SHIT" moment in the IC, when I saw we had people dropping like flies- and I thought to myself I might even close it off, as I saw no way of carrying on. Still, I think it's an amazing job we're still doing, to get this far. I think I finished it off after we got the weapons (to set up a flashback to what happened after we did, falling back and so on), and and we're keeping a great pace with what we've got.

And BTW, I will post as soon as Lady Rawr gets one up. It's interesting to see the squad talking to each other when they're not in combat, and I guess that Jan's just kind of been running around about certain stuff.
