Exclamation Metal of the world - my views

    Hey!

So I was wondering - over the last few years I've gotten really into metal, to the point where I have sifted through most of the obscure genres and I was just wondering what others think.

Generally from most people I've come to expect that they don't like it one bit and would probably comment something akin to this "Metal is all shit, who the fuck wants to listen to screaming and random sounds?"

Some few bands out there is totally agree! But the type of music I listen to could perhaps be described as such. It's even gotten to the point where I'm not keen on any other music - especially anything remotely slow or with describable lyrics. Odd right?

I've taken to listening to music from all over the world - as I find if I can't understand the words I think of the almost as another instrument altogether.

All I'm suggesting is maybe that we discuss that? And possibly I hope to find someone with similar taste.

Here and some links to music that I would consider my favourites - so try not to rip into them too much

((First few will be up in a min))

I realise that you may not like any of these - but try explain that creatively if you want to.

I'm more a fan of the "Sludge""doom" or the unfortunately named "stoner metal" that has risen in popularity with some. with the Stoner variety, you have a song structure that can be minimal yet lengthy and psychedelic while using a mainly blues influenced scale. Language never bothered me as I feel the musicality of the language only adds to the sounds character. For example; Boris. A Japanese Doom/ noise/ rock band, singing almost exclusively in their native language, yet never lacking in their delivery of aggression or malice.

    TL;DR

    this:

    Thats pretty sweet!

Yeah I asked my friend why its called stoner metal - considering I don't like it particularly apparently a good alternate name is desert rock? As you can maybe tell from the above I'm pretty keen on music that is much faster.

I like these guys though and they are stoner metal... I think...

I love my heavy metal, I really do.
Though I'm less interested in genres and sub-genres than I am in the mood of the music. That is, the actual mood that the music evokes, as well as the mood I need to be in to listen to it.
On a typical day I can cycle through almost any kind of metal, from the very beginning (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest), to modern bands (Baroness, Gojira, High on Fire) and almost anything in between. Though if I absolutely had to choose any kind of genre to be my favourite, it would be Progressive Metal. It's such a broad label that can easily encompass any number of styles and fuse them in ways that are original, exciting and just a lot more interesting.

That said, since my tastes have expanded quite a lot over the past couple of years, I don't feel right calling myself a Metalhead. I don't love metal any less, it's just that I've grown to love some lighter, different kinds of music just as much. This is also another reason that genre has become less important to me.

I also absolutely cannot stand the childish "your taste is slightly different to mine, you're obviously a poser!" mentality, so I've tried to get away from that kind of scene. I think some people perhaps take it all a little too seriously. Like everything in life, you have to stand back once in a while and see the funny side of it.

That’s fair enough – I suppose that I’ve gone in the opposite direction in terms of I used to listen to anything – however I will only really enjoy faster metal now.
It drives my partner mad as we used to listen to mainstream chart music all the time – and even though I will listen to it, I don’t enjoy it at all anymore.

I’ve only ever been to one local gig – and as amazing as it was I don’t really fit in particularly and get abused quite a bit when ‘thrashing around’ – so I’m pretty safe from being accused of anything poser like or having to endure that mentality. As I said my friends – aside from one – are all pretty flabbergasted and think the ‘just screaming and noise’ side of things.

So much of this. I went to a GWAR show a few months ago and was aghast at the number of people standing outside the venue looking bored and disdainful at people. Yes, we realize it took you a long time to sew all those smelly patches on the denim vest you wear so proudly. But forchirissakes, it's a GWAR show. I'm here to have fun, slam in the pit, and not take your "what a poser" bull-shit.

I wonder what drives people to behave like that GWAR look awesome, but I've not actually listened to any of their stuff properly.

Saw them live last year, they were amazing.

Another band to check out would be Parkway Drive.
