Parallel Universe RP

[Alchemist]

Before you read this, you should know that I know next-to-nothing about parallel universes and the likes. I'm not an expert of any kind in astrophysics and/or sciences related to parallel universes. Suggestions/questions/discussions, however, are very much welcome. I was watching a movie called 'Another Earth' the other day and I figured that it would make a good idea for an RP. Also- if this garners enough interest, it will make it to the OOC either under the free or casual section. I will be taking in only a limited number of people (probably 6-7) and the rest of the characters will be NPCs.

Another thing you should know is that this RP is intended to be not so much about the science behind parallel universes than about human nature and second chances.

ANOTHER EARTH

Where the doors are moaning all day long.

The following diary entries were found in Dr. Sennher Roarke's apartment in Houston, Texas; a day after his death.

December 7th, 2012 :
I was on my way to work when I saw it.
Another Earth in the sky.
What an exciting time for the world of astronomy! Events like this happen only once-in-a-millennium.

January 1st, 2013 :
What an utter disgrace! Out of all the groups of people Houston could have chosen, it made do with a couple of snotty-nosed, red-faced, harsh-talking criminals for the Avis Space Program. Even the thought of them laying their eyes on the shuttle fills me with disgust.

January 4th, 2013 :
I got into a fight with John over the criminals-as-passengers issue. That man is complete jell-o and gummy bears in the head. He kept blabbering about 'Second chances' and threw around a couple of 'They're the ones who are perfect for the job, Senn! Moreover, they're the only one's who've volunteered. It is a second chance for them to prove that they can contribute to the society despite being criminals. And, second chances don't come around often. A chance for redemption doesn't come around often." Johnny boy is growing too soft-headed. Neglecting the fact that he topped in MIT in addition to being an extra-ordinary astrophysicist, I can't help but wonder who appointed him as the head of the entire program.

January 13th, 2013 :
I'm leaving to New Guinea, Mexico with the crate of rats (Refer : Criminals) for the 'intensive training program' tomorrow. I just hope they don't nick us off in the middle of the night and sell the equipment to a pawn-broker. But on second thought, that would teach Johnny a valuable lesson about shipping criminals off to another planet in space-shuttles.

May 1st, 2013 :
Johnny thinks I'm a 'grumpy old man'.'If you weren't such a genius, Senn, I'd probably kidnap you and ship you off to Atlantis.' he added. Am I really that grumpy?

May 29th, 2013 :
I talked to one of them today.
"Burke's the name." He says he's from New York. He says he got thrown into jail for killing his wife. I didn't feel sorry for him, he deserved what he got. But now that I think back, I was strangely drawn to him, but more so to his story. On another note, the equipment is still in place.

July 19th, 2013 :
The rats are beginning to look more human to me now. It's almost as if I've discovered a part of myself that I've never known. A part of me that's slowly beginning to understand Johnny.

July 23rd, 2013 :
The rats (Refer : Humans now) are fine with me calling them 'Rats'. How very preposterous! They leave to second Earth in a few months. I must admit, I find myself feeling a little sad at the thought. Their stories have somehow bizarrely connected me to them. I looked at my face in the mirror for a full hour last night, and I am convinced that they need a second chance. I am also convinced that I am not grumpy.

October 31st, 2013 :
They are prepared to go. Tomorrow, we return to Texas where Avis (The name of the shuttle that will carry them to the Earth-like planet) will be awaiting our arrival. I have received news that a few shuttle engineers apart from the general crew will be accompanied by the passengers during the launch. We're excited and . . . scared.

November 14th, 2013 :
At 2 : 45 AM, after much anticipation, we received a coded transmission from Avis.

"There is a dense field of energy surrounding the second Earth. I'm not sure whether we're going to make it through the field. We . . ., we might crash mid-way if we take a risk."

I protested with Johnny to let them return, but he wouldn't listen. I knew him well, and I had an inkling about his next course of action, but I didn't have power over him. After a lengthy discussion about the worst case scenarios, it was decided that Avis would continue on. Fifteen minutes after contacting Avis about our decision, the transmissions went berserk. We tried, but there was very little we could do without information input from the other side. As I was about to retire home for the night, it was established that all contact with Avis was lost.

After thirty years of service, I quit my job.

December 7th, 2013 :
Johnny called me today. He said that the Government would shut down the Avis Space Program. He also said that he wouldn't let it happen. I couldn't comprehend was he was trying to tell me, or rather, I didn't want to comprehend what he was trying to tell me.
"I-it could . . . it could be a parallel universe, Senn. That would make sense, wouldn't it? Another Earth. A-another you. Another me. Second chances, Senn."
He didn't sound like himself.

But then again, he hadn't been himself since that night.

December 31st, 2013 :
I helped lower fifteen empty coffins into the ground today. Johnny wasn't there. I met Burke's daughter. I noticed the vague resemblance, she had that crooked smile of his. She asked me questions I couldn't answer, and questions I didn't want to answer. "Second chances don't come around often." I remembered Johnny saying. But it wasn't until I saw the girl when I realized that second chances don't come around often, but they also don't come around without a price tag attached to them.

Entry #13

November 14th, 2039 :
I have never believed in miracles. I am an old man now, so my memory may not serve me well, but I'm sure that all my life I have never believed in miracles. Until today.

At precisely 3:00 AM, twenty-five years after I quit my job, a transmission was received by the now abandoned Avis facility. I was there.

"-Static-"

"We made it through the field a few minutes ago, Houston. And we were all wrong, all along.

Avis has now landed on Earth - in a parallel Universe."
