A new dog breed - need ideas

I'm planning to make the perfect farm dog

These are the traits I look for:

    Speed
    Stamina
    Strength
    Size
    family friendly
    Good with any animal
    Excellent herding ability
    Good work ethic

(In other words: the dog I plan to breed can't be limited to just herding sheep or cattle. It has to be highly trainable but willing to be a lazy inside dog when not working. any ideas for breeds to throw into a mix would be nice!)

You can't just create a dog breed, they aren't Digimon. A dog isn't born with abilities and traits already bred into it, they have to learn all these things.

Go watch Dogs 101 or something to find a breed, people here will have different experiences.

Well... you KINDA can, and they kinda are, actually. That's why labradoodles are a thing.

Aussie dogs are good at just about everything you brought up, although they're not as big as other shepherd-types. This guy right here:

is mostly "Belgian Turvuren," with Australian Cattledog, Rottweiler, and Retriever, and some other junk too. He fits almost everything you described, although size-wise he's only about 45 pounds, compared to my white shepherd at 75ish. But they're both mutts, not "bred" for anything in particular, so your mileage may vary.

Personally, I would go with a Great Pyrenees. Though, I might be biased. I've had one on my farm since I was born. They are fantastic dogs. Great with animals and families. Very intelligent and strong, too.

Being new..I'll try not to step on any toes. But, this is a passionate subject for me. If you are serious, then you first need to do some research on responsible breeding. You don't just throw some dogs together and get a breed. Making a new breed of dog takes years to do. The Labradoodle didn't happen over night, and the man that created them now wishes that he hadn't. People still don't realize too that, you don't put a Lab and a Poodle together and get a Labradoodle.

To create a breed, first you have to have a set goal in mind. Then you look for dogs to put together. Not just any dogs, you need dogs that are proven, in both conformation, working and health. Not just a vet check up, but, having OFA (can't be done until two years old) and a butt load of other health passes for genetic diseases and the like. EX: German Shepherd Dog, you don't want a dog that comes from a line that has bad hips and pass that on, that defeats the purpose of responsible breeding and making a superior working dog. (Which, since you want this dog to become a breed you need to make it better. If you have a weak nerved bad health dog that wont work, no ones going to want it.)

Ok, so lets say you find two dogs, they are health passed, there temps are ideal, they have the drive to do the work and have proven themselves in trails...Ok, so you breed them and you get pups. This is not a breed. You then have to wait for those pups to grow up, either keep them or co own them. Not all the pups are going to have the same traits. Some will be from mom, some will be from dad. Ok, so they grow up. You look at them, which ones have the traits you want? Ok, do you want more of mom in them, or dad? Another breed of dog? Repeat Step one, and after those pups are grown you repeat again.

You do this until you start to see what you want, then you may have to line breed and/or inbreed, spay/neuter the pups that don't meet your needs so they don't go one to produces more dogs for the shelters.

Creating an actual breed of dog takes generations. After breeding dogs of the same mixes for about five generation of pups, you then have a breed of dog almost. If you want to be taken seriously in the dog world, you need to have your own dog club, be recognized by someone like, AKC, CKC, FCI, etc etc, compete in competition trails and/or confirmation shows, etc etc.

I'll spare you my lecture on placing dogs in homes. lol

Then, a breed of dog you will have.

In all honesty though, there are over 500 dog breeds as it is, there is no need for more.

ETA: You have also pretty much described a well bred, well trained, socialized, even tempered German Shepherd Dog.

GP are guardians, if you want a dog that can work all day and come in and be with the family a GP isn't a dog for that. They were bred to spend their lives with what they are guarding, not the family.
