More than ten years. Now I know what you're thinking, 'Online roleplaying hasn't even been popular for that long!' or something the like.

Didn't at least a few of us play pretend when we were kids? Pretend we were knights battling demons or pirates plundering loot or spacemen exploring unmapped reaches of the galaxy. I did that a lot when I was young and I count it as 'Live Action Roleplaying'.

I think I was in second grade or so when I first played D&D. My parents were D&D nerds.

I was entirely too young at the time, but have more or less done some form of RP in some fashion ever since.

As for the forum-based style, I think I was about 15 when I started. Really sucked back then. But more or less improved, I think, since then. Hopefully. I would really, really hope so. I was pretty awful.

More than ten years now, as old as that makes me feel. I started in the Yahoo! Chat rooms when they had user created rooms. Oh yeah, I was a dark-hooded loner in the corner of the tavern. No regrets.

As far as what keeps me going, as others have stated, this site really. There's such a wide range of styles and abilities on here and that keeps me interested and happy.

I've been roleplaying for several years, but I've been writing short stories ever since I learned how to write. It always has and always will be a passion of mine. I'm currently upping my skill level, expanding my vocabulary, and maintaining my muse the best I can so I can get started on a novel. This site mostly is just to provide me some entertainment so I can do some easy writing to relax.

There was a point in all of my years of writing where I took a long hiatus to dive into the world of dance and theatre, both of which are a passion of mine as well.
