Why do threads on typically polarizing / inviting a flamewar issues last or do better in Spam than in Off Topic?

Is it because Spam isn't meant to be taken seriously so we don't take these threads as serious so we don't get into the butthurt flaming? Because that doesn't really seem to be it, reading over some of them.

Because spam can joke with it, and lighten the tension.

But also because people in OT, or OT regulars, are usually the kind of people who can't vibe, and so they value themselves on "opinion or intellectual thought", which means their whole being of worth is dependant on them being right, and so they will just fucking cling onto whatever idea they have like a baby rather than y'know, learn.

I do it too to an extent. But then again I can joke.

Basically, OT debate is a place for people to rant and flame at others due to political things they can't control, and then they feel better.

I doubt that's relevant. The higher posts-per-hour is because of a) more people and b) more senseless chitchat that takes literally 10 seconds to write and post.

Because MDK and Dudel aren't in debates in Spam and therefore people have a chance to say something before either of them attempt to cut them off at the knees.

Also the general fear of being called "butthurt" if they get too serious is probably a factor.

I post in Spam discussions on occasion ... but I largely can't be arsed with most "discussion" in Spam because I'm left with "No U!" or people simply leave. OT people will keep feeding me, and feeding me, and feeding me.
