Yellow warning tape fenced the building's entrance; uniformed cops, homicide detectives, even forensics all bustling in and out of the only two apartments on the 3rd story of the old fashioned upscale complex. Agent Quinn had just arrived on the scene, he had gotten a morning call to take care of the situation immediately, rather than report to the office, he was assuming he would be showing up earlier than his new partner. In his left hand he carried a bag of McDonald's and in his right an equally crappy coffee, which when he took a sip of it after closing his car door with his rear end, his head would cock back in reaction to its bitter taste.
"I fucking said 5 sugars..." He sighed in frustration, complaining to no one in particular as he bent down mid-stride to move between the bright crime scene tape, opening up his arms and gesturing towards the badge hanging around his neck if he ever got the 'you shouldn't be here' stares. As he passed into the lobby a rookie detective began heading his way upon recognizing his badge, armed with a notebook full of orders no doubt.
"Excuse me, sir, are you the federal agent we were told about?" He asked, walking after Quinn as he headed farther into the building.
"What floor is the scene on?" Quinn responded not even bothering to answer the rookie directly, stopping before moving any further towards both the elevator and staircase.
"We'll take the stairs sir, it's only on the 3rd floor," The local detective replied as he began to step up the stairs before realizing that Quinn was not following him. He looked back to see Quinn standing in front of elevator doors, the up button already lit up. "Um, sir, it's only on the 3rd floor," He repeated himself once more.
"Yeah, I heard you the first time... I'll meet you up there," He said, giving a faint smile and nodding his head as if to shoo the younger professional.
"The elevator was shut off for security reasons." Quinn closed his eyes as he heard the words, sighing deeply again as he seemed to reluctantly start up the stairs.
"Alright, alright..." He moaned as he headed up to the 3rd floor fairly quickly.
"Follow me sir, I'll take you to Detective Jackson," Quinn nodded emptily to the information as he was led through one of the two apartments, past forensics surrounding a couple dead bodies. "Detective Jackson sir, this is... erm... this is our special guest."
"Brian Jackson, I'm the head of the homicide investigation here," He held out his hand for Quinn who merely looked around before finding the nearby counter top to set his breakfast on and shake Jackson's hand.
"Agent Quinn. It's a pleasure, Detective, do me a favor, could you gather everyone that's on the scene here?" Somewhat confused if that was an order or a request, the detective complied nonetheless, ordering for the rookie to collect all their people at once. The reason there had been so many on the scene was because of the very nature of the crime. It included a child's death, as well as two parents, and then an unmarried couple in the next apartment over, with an unnecessary amount of blood and guts spilled all over the place, it was a given that forensics was having a field day -- exactly what Quinn did not want happening. As soon as they all gathered, Quinn stopped his initial surveying of the scene before Jackson approached him.
"Well, they're here, every last one of 'em."
"Good," Quinn clapped his hands together as he caught everyone's attention, standing up on one of the kitchen chairs. "Alright, thank you everyone, for your hard work! But you're now all dismissed!" He got back down from the chair as he clasped his hands together, indicating that was it, instantly igniting questions and comments from everyone else, including Jackson. The amount of crowd noise was too much to seriously address anything anyone was saying, so once again, Quinn got back up onto the chair, clapping his hands again. "You heard me correctly folks, this is no longer a local case, this is a matter of national security, we'll have our own teams touching this stuff. Under no circumstances should any evidence be taken to your local department -- I want everything on this kitchen table in 5 minutes, I need the entire scene clear for the federal investigation. I only need 2 boys in uniform to stand guard outside the scene... that's it... you guys can go now..." He said once more, trying to shoo them off.
"Hold on now, Agent Quinn, be reasonable. We have 5 dead bodies on our hands, 1 of them is a child, not only do we have to deal with the locals but we have to deal with the public too. My superiors aren't going to be happy with this either, I'm sure," Jackson came up rather fast on him, causing Quinn to step back a moment, before he held out his hands to space the detective away from himself.
"I am being reasonable Detective. If I wasn't being reasonable, I would have a warrant to go through your entire departments files on what information you might already have recorded on this case and then seize whatever I wish; if I wasn't being reasonable, I would subpoena you and all of your people for contaminating a federal crime scene, so you can deal with my people's bullshit until you realize how much I don't want to deal with your people's bullshit. The best thing you can do right now, Detective, is to go and complain about it to your superiors so they can tell you themselves how much it doesn't matter. It's out of your hands now, best forget this entire thing even happened," Jackson was taken aback by the sudden assertiveness in Quinn's language. At first he was about to respond, though he hesitated, before stopping himself and turning around, his face expressing clear discontent.
"Alright people, let's go, shows over," Confirming what Quinn said to them all, as Jackson shooed them all out for him. Once they were all gone, Quinn let out a sigh of relief, smiling that the scene was finally empty, hearing Jackson muttering curses to his rookie as they were the last ones going down the steps.
"Now I wonder where they keep their sugar," Quinn mumbled as he began to forage for something to sweeten his coffee in the apartment's kitchen, "I mean, kept, hah..."
