Colonel Maxon Tarven, 15th Armored Repulsorlift Regiment
Outside Vratokh, Exaron, Exaron System
The Imperial PDF were crumbling in front of the New Republic troops even before they dismounted from their vehicles. The armored personnel carriers advanced past Maxon's tanks, their laser cannons and blaster cannons, designed to destroy light armored vehicles and dismounts, tearing through the Imperial defenders even as they tried to flee. The flimsy barricades and attempts at entrenchments were destroyed or smashed as the vehicles advanced. They pushed through the outer levels of the city before it got too congested, watching the Imperials flee before them, until the city streets became more congested, the buildings higher, and the threat greater. Some civilians had fled from the area, leaving their vehicles in the street and their houses open, but some remained, watching in awe as the Republic pushed through. Some of them shouted cheers of joy, but others, too scared by the possibility of Imperial reprisal even here, in the face of their freedom, cowered or pulled their children inside.
Yet Maxon was not fooling himself; he knew that there was still difficult fighting ahead, further into the city where Imperial sentiment would be higher, and that would be where the PDF and the Stormtroopers would make their stand. The Citadel itself boasted impressive defenses, and would likely require the might of the entire force in Vratokh to capture. The vehicles would also not take them the whole way, and the mechanized regimental commander was apparently having the same thoughts; the rear ramps of the APCs came down, and a squad poured out of each vehicle. They wore battle vests which provided some defense against blaster bolts and explosions, as well as a helmet to protect from fragmentation, and they carried A280 and A295 blaster rifles into battle. There was an occasional repeating blaster or sniper rifle mixed in amongst the men, and a few of them carried rocket launchers for when high explosives and penetrating power were needed.
A message popped up on Maxon's battle tracker, and he opened it. The screen scrolled to the west, towards Rywekh, and informed him that Imperial forces were massing for a breakout sortie. Maxon nodded; it only made sense, after all. The Imperials had to attempt something, anything, to reinforce their units defending the capital. Maxon hoped that the Army outside Rywekh could hold them off and allow Maxon and the rest of the units to make as much progress in Vratokh as possible.
