Interesting, I was actually hoping for this to be our main conceptI would love to play out the role of the male Channeler, if I'm allowed to of course.

Where you then thinking about joining the game I have going or perhaps I should do a reboot of it since the game never took off properly. If you want to join the existing game you can play a male channeler but then there will be two of them since the one the hunting party is after have been mentioned a few times. If we start the game again you can make the man they are hunting for.

Gah! I just started reading the first book! They are so amazing, but I doubt I have enough info to actually contribute to a good roleplay.

If you have a basic knowledge of the world then you should be alright. You can also get quite a bit of information from this page if there are any concepts you are having trouble with. And yes the books are amazing. Be warned though the Wiki do contain spoilers.
To make it more clear what you need to know to play in this RPG is the basics of the mythology with the Dark One having tainted saidin so male channelers go insane. You need to know what an Aes Sedai is and if you are going to play a channeler you need to know the basics of the magick system. You need to know a few things about the world for example that it is about Renaissance level of technology but there are no firearms for example. If you know the basics which you should get somewhat into book one then you can play.
