So I'm leading the discussion for my philosophy class tomorrow, and I was hoping to get some opinions on a specific topic I'll be starting. I'm only coming here because I know people are active. If I went to Off-Topic, I might get three or four responses before class tomorrow.
How do you feel about the disparity in profession ratios between men and women in the workplace. Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate reposts the statistic that women make 75 cents for every dollar men make, and that studies have shown women prefer jobs involving communication and the arts over the jobs men prefer; ones involving objects or ideas.
Previously the author had begun an argument against the idea that behaviors in men and women are socially constructed by providing case studies, but did not provide such for these 'job-claims'. What do you, Spam, think of it? Are job preferences in women and men socially constructed and so finely ingrained into us that they seem natural, or are they genetic/natural and guaranteed (so to speak) at conception?
I've actually read an article that said that that 75:100 thing was wrong. It really depends on the profession. Some jobs women make more in, some they make less.
I don't think payment should be based on gender though. I think it should be based on the quality of the work.

Someone (Foxes maybe?) posted this video a while ago when this topic came up. It makes some sense.

Unfortunately no matter what we think, nothing will change. Because our countries and industries are run by dipshits.
