Actually everyone is born without them. They develop of their own accord. Although some people don't develop them at all. They tend to begin to ground in your teens, although they can (from my understanding) appear in your early twenties as well.

Are we talking about surgeries? I've had a hernia removed, the muscles behind my eyes tweaked, my tonsils removed, my wisdom teeth need to be surgically removed, and I'm getting reconstructive surgery so I can breathe through my nose. And I got a laser frenectomy for my mouth, but they didn't knock me out for that.

Other than that I'm fine, though.

I had all of mine done last January. I had one that was impacted, so they put me out entirely. (Had to cut out part of the bone because the tooth was sideways.) It took less than an hour, and I was home shortly thereafter. I never took any of the big gun painkillers, as I was afraid they'd upset my stomach -- I only took Tylenol and had no discomfort whatsoever with just that. I didn't even bleed afterwards, really.

Get together some movies you want to watch or books you want to read, put on some comfy clothes, and just rest. Stay away from foods that have small bits to them (like rice or small pasta) because they'll get stuck in the holes and THAT is uncomfortable. (And difficult to rinse out at times. And you don't want to rinse too much or you risk getting dry socket, which I've heard hurts like hell.)

All in all, I was terrified to have it done, and it was no big deal in the end. You'll be fine.
