Warring States reboot. Medieval Nation RP

Warring States – Kingdoms and Heroes

    Ye' Grande OOC

Character Sheet Compilation! - Courtesy of Keia!

The dusts of battle kicked and riled, choking and blinding the warriors. It had not the chance to rest - ever scattered, blurring the visions of many within the war-torn continent. And yet, there are individuals who clearly witness their names carved into glory, into fame, into the very records to be kept and remembered. Nations have risen and fallen, borders blurred, but the ever rising flames of battle has steel and fangs sharpened - all in the hopes of unifying a chaotic continent under a single banner - all in the hopes of being the supreme ruler of the great continent of Vinheim.

Will you be forgotten and treaded upon in the dusts of battle, or will you leave your name in the hearts of warriors?

    -*-

Welcome, this is the first nation RP I have created and I plan to reboot it due to inactivity in the older version.

The premise of this Nation RP will be within a Fantasy Medieval era, and sadly will not involve any sort of sorcery or magic. However, the choice of playing as any fantasy race will be available. I am not fussy regarding the issue of race, so you may design your own race as long as I have given it a good look for balancing purposes.

You may play as TWO roles in this RP – as a Sovereign Ruler, or as a Famed General.

    (Only 3 slots available)

Players who are applying for a position as a Sovereign must be aware that the entire RP will revolve around you. Therefore, you must be active enough if you are aiming for a slot. You will mostly be involved in diplomacy and in certain cases, leading your army. The advantage of being able to get a slot as a Sovereign Ruler however, will be the ability to create your own nation from scratch. You will be designing your race, army, tradition, culture and even designate a nation speciality to stand out from adversary nations. As the head of your nation, your Ruler cannot charge into battle recklessly. Therefore, you must seek the services of esteemed champions scattered throughout the lands of Vinheim, as they possess a higher aptitude in battles than you. Entrust your loyal vassals with your army and decimate your opponents. However, be wary of an open rebellion if you entrust a little too much to one particular General. After all, they are individuals with no ties to one nation. Regardless of whatever decisions you make, your goal is to unify the continent under your banner through any means necessary.

(Slots for a Famed General are ALWAYS OPEN, regardless of how far the RP has progressed)

You will have your hands full in fighting battles or guarding a border as requesting by their Sovereign Ruler. You may play as a stalwart warrior, or an intellectual tactician/diplomat, or any character you wish. Make friends and enemies in the battlefield, as you engage in duels against skilled opponents, or lead your army and crush your opponents through sheer power and tactical wits. You may start out as a wandering warrior/scholar or already sworn allegiance to a Ruler. Regardless of how it is, your blade yearns the battlefield. However, if you seek more than just a name in the warring states of Vinhelm, you may choose to betray your ruler and start your own nation through an open rebellion. However, be wary that your decision may bring about your downfall, or even an end to your life.

    -*-

Each Nation will be allotted one Capital district and two City districts to start with. You will also have 1000 points of Resource (Res) and a standing army of 400 Tier 1 men to start with. That means 200 men will be assigned in the capital and 100 in each City.

The battles will be flexible, but closely monitored. I will flag any events which I deem improper or just plain impossible. There are a few numerical values which may seem to be daunting applied on the battlefield and your armies (weapon proficiency and the like), but please just take it as a guideline to roughly gauge the differences.

Diplomacy will have no guidelines, which means that you are free to plot, scheme, gang up on one another as you will.

Interested. Might go for a Dwarf General. Will probably be back later with questions regarding what works as Special Traits and what doesn't. In general though, it can be related to economics rather than combat just as well, right? Stuff to raise morale of your troops or the income of a district in case you're assigned to one?

Interesting! A few issues that might need some minor balancing, maybe? Having a race that has 10% more Res income seems a little OP in my opinion, especially since the others only have somewhat-minor bonuses and minuses. But maybe not. Dunno how minor those bonuses are, really.

Lecos > Yes, that is the general idea for special traits.

Heroguy > Yes I would definitely still need to tweak a little on minor balancing issues.

I may give this a try, as it sounds very interesting. Of course, I have a few questions:

What is the income of a General who is assigned to a district? Is there a set amount, or is it dependent on how much the Sovereign is willing to pay them?

Can Generals without Sovereign rulers have their own small personal companies (I.E. the General as the leader of a band of mercenaries, or as a VIP with a personal guard, or such), or are they alone until a Sovereign grants them a company to command?

Can Sovereigns lead their armies in the front lines, or do they stay back to watch over their lands?

In addition to the above question, what happens in the event of a Sovereign's death without conquering his lands? Will the Player be able to create a "next of kin" or "heir" in order to keep their role as Sovereign? Will the Sovereign responsible for the death (assassination, duel, his army defeating the opposing Sovereign, etc.) take over the opposing, defeated Sovereign's lands?

On another hand, what happens to a Sovereign if s/he is captured after an enemy conquers his/her land? What if they are captured without their lands being conquered (due to bad planning, ambushes in travelling routes, etc.)? What happens to the Player of a captured Sovereign?

For the racial advantages and disadvantages... Is the limit only two advantages and one disadvantage, or can you have more?

I may have more later. Again, I am very interested in this idea.

What is the income of a General who is assigned to a district? Is there a set amount, or is it dependent on how much the Sovereign is willing to pay them?

The general will only receive their income from the sovereign through two methods. Firstly, the Sovereign will be able to reward their generals (this would fall under Diplomacy, and as mentioned, it is very flexible). The normal method for Generals to receive income is by assigning them to a district. The total income of Res in the district will be the General's income instead. (As mentioned in the Districts Information Tables, 'it will give the general full authority of the land.') The Sovereign will no longer enjoy the income from the district under the General. However, the Sovereign may choose to tax the Generals - and the Generals can choose to obey or disobey. Also, the Sovereign will be enjoying a separate Bonus Res Income (The amount is uncertain now, but it will be depending on the General's aptitude in District management) if they assign a General to one of their districts.

Can Generals without Sovereign rulers have their own small personal companies (I.E. the General as the leader of a band of mercenaries, or as a VIP with a personal guard, or such), or are they alone until a Sovereign grants them a company to command?

Yes, it is achievable through using "Special Traits". You will be given a company (100 men) of T1 men of your own design which will not have their loyalty decreased at all, will not require any sort of maintenance cost and morale reduction will be minimized. The level cap for your personal band of mercenary will be equivalent to the total level of investment into Special Traits. (As such, there are only 5 levels available to invest into Special Trait) In order to be able to increase the 'level up' cap of your own personal band of army, you will need to invest on another level into Special Traits. As this speciality is bordering game balance breaking, I will only allow 2 players to be in possession of such Special Trait.

Another method is that, your personal guard is not of a large number, less than 10 - for role-playing purposes. (They are merely NPC soldiers, and therefore cannot be OPed) I will overlook that, and you are allowed to have a few NPC followers without needing to require anything, other than a mention of them in your CS.

Can Sovereigns lead their armies in the front lines, or do they stay back to watch over their lands?

Yes, the Sovereigns can choose to lead their armies in the front lines. However, be wary that their skill points are slightly lacking in comparison to a General. Still, it is your choice in the matter to go out in the front-lines or not. Depending on the design of your nation, if they are a pacifist nation - they will not view their sovereign kindly if he is rushing into battle often. However, if your nation has an aggressive culture (For example, the Orcs), they will be very supportive of your Sovereign to go into battle instead.

Yes, players are supposed to create the 'next in line for the throne' or 'heir' in the Family section in the event the Sovereign stumbles upon premature death. In order to take over the 'defeated' Sovereign's lands, it will either be by force or diplomacy. Through killing off the Sovereign, you may use the advantage of confusion to invade, or have missionaries (?) sway the hearts of the local populace so they would instead welcome your leadership with open arms instead of the 'untrusted heir'. However, the player with the dead Sovereign may be able to 'hide the fact' that their Sovereign is dead to lessen the confusion. If you managed to kill off the entire Royal Family, the entire state will turn into an NPC state.

On another hand, what happens to a Sovereign if s/he is captured after an enemy conquers his/her land? What if they are captured without their lands being conquered (due to bad planning, ambushes in travelling routes, etc.)? What happens to the Player of a captured Sovereign?

In the event the Sovereign is captured, his 'heir' will be a temporary replacement until they can 'rescue' the Sovereign. This is the entire reason why Sovereigns will need to be wary when going into battle. Therefore, commit your battle plans with extreme risk.

For the racial advantages and disadvantages... Is the limit only two advantages and one disadvantage, or can you have more?

For now, I am still tweaking with the balancing issues for Racial Advantages and Disadvantages. If you can give me a few suggestions I may try and apply it to see if it works.

A few more questions, if I may:

How are you deciding the racial advantages and disadvantages of a custom race? Is it by the description of a race given to you by the player, or by how you assume it would most benefit from / be most unique?

In the Skills and Proficiency section, are they separated by weapon type or style? For example, the use of a broadsword obviously goes under the sword category, but what about dual wielding? Is using a lance on the ground (as ridiculous as it is) a different skill than from using it the orthodox way on horseback (as they both are used different ways entirely)? Or the difference between standard spears and thrown javelins? Perhaps even bows and crossbows, arrows and bolts?

Do maces fit into one of the above sections, or are they a "Custom Arm?"

By "Aggressive and Dangerous Mounts," would I be incorrect to assume you mean some creatures other than horses? (Would be entertaining to have people riding giant, armored scorpions into battle against people riding giant, armored jaguars, or something more classic like people riding griffons to war.)

Please know that I do not mean to pick apart your idea out of malice, but I am genuinely interested and I tend to show my interest through questions.
    More questions = more interest.

No no, I am aware that my RP is quite incomplete, that I have not managed to sort all my information properly. (I have a tendency to be bad at wording things out myself, so that would easily lead to confusion)

Anyways, I'm glad that there are questions just in case I did not manage to cover everything relating to gameplay! Feel free to ask if there's any more uncertainties

    ---

    - How are you deciding the racial advantages and disadvantages of a custom race? Is it by the description of a race given to you by the player, or by how you assume it would most benefit from / be most unique?

Yes, it is by description of the race given by the player. I will allocate advantages and disadvantages which will certainly account game balancing and staying as close as I can to the player's design.

    - In the Skills and Proficiency section, are they separated by weapon type or style? For example, the use of a broadsword obviously goes under the sword category, but what about dual wielding? Is using a lance on the ground (as ridiculous as it is) a different skill than from using it the orthodox way on horseback (as they both are used different ways entirely)? Or the difference between standard spears and thrown javelins? Perhaps even bows and crossbows, arrows and bolts?

It is -mostly- defined by how it is used in terms of war stratagems. It is not distinguished by weapon style, martial style or even weapon type.

So for example; dual wielding would still fall under Sword proficiency. Using a lance on the ground would be under Spear Proficiency, and if your strategy requires the unit to be mounted, you will need to have Riding proficiency and Spear together as well. Javelins would surely fall under Spear proficiency, as spears itself can be thrown as well and fits as a strategy. Bows and Crossbows, would both be under Bow Proficiency.

    - Do maces fit into one of the above sections, or are they a "Custom Arm?"

Maces are listed under Sword Proficiency, as the strategies employed are very similar - except their usage.

    - By "Aggressive and Dangerous Mounts," would I be incorrect to assume you mean some creatures other than horses? (Would be entertaining to have people riding giant, armored scorpions into battle against people riding giant, armored jaguars, or something more classic like people riding griffons to war.)

But of course. It would be boring if there's no other means of diversifying the playing field other than a multitude of fantasy races since there's no Magic or Sorcery
