    Login glitch?

Recently, I have found myself logging in twice each and every time I visit the site from a device that is not my own property, since at first attempt it never fails to give me an 'invalid redirect' notice. On the second attempt, it always logs in nicely, with the usual 'thank you for logging in' displayed.

The problem seems to be present on exceptionlessly all computers which I have used outside of my own, on the latter of which I am permanently logged in ('Remember me on this computer' ticked). I have normally used Firefox on others' computers, with private browsing switched on.

I've mentioned the cause of this once or twice before. To spare you the long explanation, all it's really caused by is you trying to log in from "www.roleplayerguild.com" and not "roleplayerguild.com", since some browsers see the two as two separate websites and save different sets of cookies for them.

Before the site upgrade, it was possible to stay logged in on "www.roleplayerguild.com" and go to "roleplayerguild.com" and be logged out- as your browser had only saved cookies for "www.roleplayerguild.com" whereas you were believed to not be logged in on "roleplayerguild.com". From there, it was actually possible to log in as a different account on "roleplayerguild.com", and remain logged in from two different accounts at the same time, actively using both, one one browser.

vBulletin apparently "fixed" this glitch when the forum upgraded (and I have "fixed" in quotes because it seems to have caused more problems than it solved) by simply not allowing anyone to log in from "www.roleplayerguild.com". As you probably haven't noticed, you've been trying to log in from "www.roleplayerguild.com", to which the site stopped you, and, when you logged in a second time, you were actually taken to "roleplayerguild.com". It's just vBulletin's way of stopping people from getting online from various alts at once.

So, there's a super easy fix here! Stop using "www.roleplayerguild.com". Just make sure you're already on "roleplayerguild.com" when you try to log in.

Ah, I see. Well, it's still a bit annoying because plenty of browsers tend to automatically supplement the "www" bit on their own, meaning that a person essentially can't go directly to 'roleplayerguild.com' before the browser itself is reconfigured.
    - I've realistically been typing in simply roleplayerguild.com, but as it is, the browser will automatically redirect me to www.roleplayerguild.com, on which I have to click at least something to get rid of the www...

I could teach the browser not to do it easily enough, but since those are not my computers, I guess I'll just accept it for an inevitable minor inconvenience. (Must say that vBulletin took the wrong approach with this one - it would be easy enough to make the redirect work in either case. Of course, I tend to have slight issues with vBulletin in general, but that's another matter.)

That's really odd- which browser are you using?

Most people who I've seen come across this would be Chrome users, since I haven't confirmed the glitch to happen anywhere else. Shouldn't you easily be able to remove the "www." from the URL manually by erasing it from your URL bar and hitting enter again?

    Edit: Oh, you use Firefox.

Well, I use Firefox for WOTM, and it's never added the "www." for me. Then again, that could be because my home page on that browser is the Official Contests forum, without the "www.", so it never goes there. The browser adding that could probably be because that's what it's used to, for lack of a better term. You've used "www." so many times that it just takes you there automatically, like when most of us will simply type 'r' on our URL bars and the site comes right up.

If you try accessing the site through a bookmark without the "www." it should stop doing that, or maybe clearing the browsing history would help?

As I said in the opening post, I have been using Firefox with private browsing enabled, meaning that it stores no history and all cookies are automatically erased as soon as I close the browser.
(Thus no, it doesn't 'remember' anything. And supplementing the www. is the default for most newer versions, not vice versa, so it'd be remembering *not* to add that bit to begin with.)

I will not create bookmarks in those computers for the same reason I private browse and won't simply reconfigure the browser - these are *not* MY computers. If I just disabled private browsing, the issue would likely disappear, but I'm not willing to do it for security reasons.

On other news, I finally managed to teach my mobile phone (which has never had any issues with sites other than those using vBulletin 4) to see the site's reply buttons. Now, if I found a decent way to make it display the outlay properly also...

If you use private browsing and you understand why it's not working for you, and you're not willing to change the fact that you use private browsing and no bookmarks, then... I can't help you. You're just going to have to deal with the "invalid redirect" message.
