If you cannot read a few paragraphs and get the general idea of things than you probably shouldn't be in the advanced section. I mean...come on Rilla, get your head out of your ass.

The summaries are for if someone isn't on long enough but wants to get the general jist of what happened during the current round.

Or for new people joining that want to learn what happened without having to read an amount of text that just makes it not worth it. Or for us to look back and easily remember what happened in earlier rounds a good bit of time later. Summaries are plenty useful and not all that much trouble to write... especially for fucking advanced rpers.

^ They have been immensely helpful for me trying to figure out wtf is going on, as well as get a very rough feel of the flavor of the rp.

I realize the benefits of summarizing the posts. However; do you acknowledge the detriments?

If reading an extensive piece makes a thread seem not worth joining, I would certainly uphold that such a participant is one that I do not want involved. It is obvious they are not quite set up for the advanced setting already. Next, if I am required to summarize the posts for whatever purpose why should I not just omit the necessity entirely by just merely posting the summary? In the legal field one would say, "why say in three pages what you can say in three sentences?" Such a philosophy would be better suited to the free or casual section. Essentially by providing summaries it provides the unspoken affirmative to read those summaries and defeat the purpose of creatively writing the post to begin with. Before long the advanced section will be filled with people who wear shirts expressing "TL-DR" and it will be welcomed with open arms. But if you want to act as the beginning of the end, to deteriorate the institution into a dilapidated feature of its former self - be my guest.

Now, since none of you probably gave that any actual thought you can continue to be lazy and read this instead...

I can see your argument, Greg, but here's my counterpoints.

1. Why say in three pages what you can say in three sentences? Because fiction is an art, not business. Why paint a picture when you can state the exact same point in a few sentences? It's kind of the same thing. We enjoy writing, and we enjoy reading. Just because summaries exist doesn't mean we're going to suddenly decide to never read what other people write because it's entertaining to read it. Reading and writing are two sides of the same coin, and obviously, we went through the trouble of finding this site in the first place since we like to write, so why not read a little? I see little reason to not do something I enjoy.

2. It's a summary, not the complete de-evolution of rp "society" as a whole. Furthermore, 90% of advanced probably doesn't even pay attention to Allaria anyway since they're not involved in it, so it's kind of moot thinking that everyone will jump on the Allaria bandwagon for summaries everywhere. I feel like either you're blowing this way out of proportion, or the way you're saying it is.

3. The people who would skip over all your writing (let's face it, it's like a post a day at best...all in all, you're not even reading a full chapter of a book even in the most verbose of scenarios) just to read the summaries are the exact people who would get bored and ditch the rp in a week, anyway...so who cares about them? They're not gonna be around. The people that actually have the drive to hold together a lengthy rp also have the drive and will to read everything, and they're the ones that are relevant. Therefore, I consider the idea that summaries will deteriorate the actual quality of rp in this thread to be minimal.

4. They already have been using this system for an entire rp which, granted, is only five pages long, but it got all the way to the finish. It's been tested, and since it's still around, I assume there weren't any problems.

Let me start out by saying, it isn't Greg. Gregory if you must but I prefer Dorian, Lord and Master, or simply Savior. I'll let you choose from that short list.

1. This argument is moot. I was not posing an argument by quoting this line but merely using it as an expression to support a separate argument entirely.

2. The de-evolution of a society always starts with one concept that gives the appearance of a good idea. Western culture looked amazing to the Japanese until it deteriorated the entirety of their beautiful culture. Outsourcing jobs seemed like a good idea until the unemployment rate hit an all time high. It only takes one person to notice and carry out to start the snowball down the mountainside before it turns into a boulder and then an avalanche.

3. Are you aware of the actual requirements for the advanced section? Custom or otherwise, the requirements are a joke regardless. I can say without question that the majority of role players even in the advanced section would find a five page post such as mine to be less beneficial than reading the summary without encouragement. You claim it is those people that would start role playing and then quit after a week; if enough of those people are let in, the thread dies as they deteriorate the curb appeal.

4. As for the system, I started in the Allaria RP probably like...at least a year ago but I feel it has totally been longer than that. So it isn't like the thread was started and then finished five pages later without mishap. It was ran I believe at least three times, dying in between before Rilla rebooted it. So running one thread with the idea successfully does not positively confirm that it works as a whole. Granted, it probably does work yet it does not weaken my previous arguments.
