    Under the Fallen Arch

The virus has completely devastated over 150 of the world’s major regions and is spreading rapidly. At this point in time we know of only one method of killing the creatures: destroy the brain. Be on the guard of any loved ones who may have recently been in any sort of contact with the infected, and if you find yourself out in a threatening position, please do not hesitate to act. Again, this is not a test, this is not a joke. We as a species are overwhelmed. We are outnumbered…

Saint Louis, Missouri! Welcome to the independent city of St. Louis here in the beautiful state of Missouri, the show me state. St. Louis, a proud port city here on the Mississippi has long lines of French lineage and was originally purchased along with most of the central United States in the Louisiana Purchase from Napoléon, Emperor of France. During your stay in St. Louis, be sure to enjoy our fine foods, our mild weather, and our beautiful sites and attractions for tourists the world over!

    The Infected
Infected persons have many names among the survivors. With their pale, dead skin, and hollow eyes they are true sight to behold. Rasping, wheezing breath and grinding teeth along with blood stains from the hemorrhaging the infection causes makes them look like something out of a horror movie. There are a few types of infected. The first is known as a Shambler, or Walker, or Stiffs. These guys are the most common of the infected that awoke the feast upon our flesh. They cannot run at all, only stumble around and shuffle toward their prey. Their more determined and scary brothers and sisters in ghoully ghoulness are the Screamers or Zeds. A zed will sprint after you like you wouldn’t believe and there is no way to tell a stiff from a zed until you see one sprinting and the other shuffling along. And last, but not least, are crawlers. These are infected that have lost their legs or feet to some accident in their previous life or after awakening and can merely pull themselves along on their hands for the rest of eternity.

    Rules
    • Fundemental Guild Rules apply at all times.
    • The GM’s word is to be respected. We know the game better than anyone, if we say something is going to happen… It is going to happen.
    • Try to keep things as realistic as possible. Zombies can walk up stairs, they can smell you, they can hear you… Don’t be dumb.
    • No Godmodding, no powergaming, no Gary/Mary-Sues.
    • No OOC fighting, this will be punished with instant IC death and banning from the game.
    • Make sure at least two people post before you post again, that is to say, no speed posting.
    • Posting MINIMUM is six hundred to eight hundred words, any post below that will be seen as inadequate; however do not strain yourself to exceed this minimum, quality is what matters. You must post at least once a week to remain in the game.
    • Include a section in your CS stating your favorite color proving you read all of this interest check and agree to the rules and know that you will be punished in character if you break them.
    • As GM I reserve the right to modify these rules as I see fit.

    The Story So Far...
It began, for St. Louis at least, in an enclosed hospital ward where at first single patients began showing symptoms but soon an epidemic rocked the clinic, and the doctors struggled to keep order, an unclassified viral infection was spreading like wildfire. As it left the hospital when patients turned violent, control was impossible. Saint Louis police struggled to keep the infected persons near the hospital and soon the infection spread across the city. On the fourth day after Patient Zero, the United States National Guard was brought in to begin a heavy quarantine program over the city, shutting down public transports, using violent force on hostile "civilians" and closing off certain areas of the city. Soon they were overwhelmed by the rising number of "unruly civilians" but were unauthorized to use "lethal force" as it was unsure whether the infected persons could be helped. The Guard broke ranks and began using lethal force on the infected against their orders. After seven days of heavy fighting and most of the city being infected, full scale evacuations of important personnel such as Doctors and Politicians was put into effect at midnight on November 14, 2013 as the evacuated were to be taken to a safezone just outside the city along the Mississippi where they would be flown out of the country in a series of leapfrogged helicopter rides to Mexico where it was believed a more secure zone had been established. It is now November 15, 2013... And evacuations have failed. We must now survive... Whether we have been overrun en route, or were never meant to be evacuated in the first place, we are all now, on the same level.

    Height: 5'10
    Weight: 190lbs
    Hair: Black, some gray
    Eyes: Gray
    Skin: Somewhat tanned
Tattoos: None, he doesn't hold with that nonsense
    Piercings: None
Scars: Three bullet scars in his left side, under the ribcage, small scars on the knuckles of his right hand, and a more recent shank wound in his right side, underneath the ribcage.

    1 Sig-Sauer P228 chambered in .40 S&W (3 mags)

    Job: Underboss, Marietti Family
    Specialization: Racketeering (Mostly protection)

    Notable skills:
Paulie's skills lie in intimidation and extortion. He knows how to intimidate people to make them do what he wants them to do, and he can generally detect when someone's lying, though it's never been proven that his skills in lie detection aren't a product of his belief that everyone's lying to him. He's no safecracker, but he's good at picking locks and opening doors, he can hotwire a car, and he's not a half-bad shot with a pistol, despite a lack of formal training. Though he struggles with computers and similar technology, he's not a complete dolt, and can generally manage to figure things out when he needs to.

    1 Sig-Sauer P228 chambered in .40 S&W
    2 12-Round Magazines for Sig-Sauer P228 (12/12)
    1 12-Round Magazine for Sig-Sauer P228 (9/12)
    1 12-Round Magazine for Sig-Sauer P228 (0/12)
2 Protein Bars, Peanut Butter flavor
    1 Bottle of Ibuprofen
    1 Military-style Canteen

    History:
Though involved in questionable activity since his early childhood, Paul Buscetta didn't become a made man in Cosa Nostra until his twenty-eighth birthday, though he proved fairly quickly that he was pretty damn good at what he did, soon becoming the capo for the Marietti family's protection ring. He stayed there for a few years, even managing to avoid a hit (a goon from a rival family shot him three times, point-blank with a snubnose .38) and even streamlining the process by cutting down the number of soldiers he had to keep track of.

Eight years later, Joe Marietti was killed (ironically, by the same goon who attempted to off Paul) when his car exploded. The family's underboss moved up to take Marietti's place, and it came as no surprise when Paulie, now fifty, was selected to move into the role of underboss. Two years later, caught with his pants down, Paulie was picked up by the feds for his criminal activity. He was thrown in prison, where a false rumor circulated that he'd turned state's witness, and he was shanked by one of the family's men on the inside.

Betrayed by his family and fearing for his life, Paulie managed to work a deal out with the agents investigating the organization, and agreed to testify against the Mariettis for a more lenient sentence.

During the transfer a prison in Missouri, Paulie's escort was attacked by the undead, and he managed to overpower the agents and secure his escape...

    Personality:
Paulie is unpredictable, calm and friendly one moment, violent and angry the next. He used to take medication to regulate his mood, but without it, he's prone to losing his temper rather quickly. His anger is generally of the hot and passionate variety, less of the cold and calculating variety, meaning that he's prone to do stupid things when he's angry, and often has done stupid things when he's angry.

    Strengths:
    Physically tough
    Good at lockpicking, hotwiring vehicles
    Decent shot with a handgun
Knows how to influence people (though admittedly in a negative fashion)
    Good eyesight, great hearing
    Good survival instinct

    Weaknesses:
    Possibly mentally unstable
    Violent tendancies, brash demeanor
Old-fashioned, doesn't know much about or care much for new technology
Technically a fugitive of the United States government
Taking me seriously is generally discouraged, mostly because even I don't take me seriously.

"In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move."

    ~Mountain Bicycle

History: Colin spent most his life in the middle ground. He did well in school, but did not get very many scholarships to college. Colin had a nice family, but there were conflicts that occured on a regular basis. He had three cats and a dog, but two cats died when he was young. But even so, he perservered. He became a black belt in Tae Kwon Doe, went to the Missouri University of Science and Technology(Rolla), where he majored in Nuclear Engineering. Colin joined a Fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and prospered. He had a large group of friends to depend upon, and 8 other pledge brothers whom he would trust with his life. By the time the infection started, Colin was already an officer of the Fraternity, and well respected on campus. All this was destroyed when the infection came to Rolla. The first infected in Rolla was Colin's pledge brother Nick, and the infection spread through the house. Blood was everywhere, and quickly, only Colin was the last one left alive in the house. He had to kill all of his house brothers just to survive. He has nightmares about it almost everytime he sleeps.

He is heading to St. Louis because he heard on the television that there was a safe zone in St. Louis.

    Personality:
~Before Infection: Colin was a teaher. When people needed help, he was there, doing everything in his power to help them get to be the best they can be. He lived in a fraternity, but Colin wasn't social. He didn't drink, and was not a guy who would hang out at the bar. When it came to things he cared about, he put his whole heart and soul into everything about it.
~After Infection: Twitchy. He avoids people like they were dead, and in most cases, they are. He is very quiet, but in his head, there are screams. He does not get much sleep, so he is stressed out, and extremely easy to piss off. He retains some of his old personality, but it is locked away in his head, to protect it from a world gone wrong.

    Strengths:
~Melee Fighter: (when he does fight), Colin is hard hitting and accurate. He has good fighting skills.
~Total Stamina: Through years of martial arts and cross country running, Colin can go on for long periods of time, and still remain at the top of his game.
~Quick Study: Enjoys learning, and is quick on the uptake.

    Weaknesses:
~Inexperienced: Student in college, so he doesn't have alot of skills concerning weapon fighting/medicine/unused to being in dangerous situations
~Shattered Mind: After being attacked by his close friends(house brothers), Colin hasn't thought straight(or even slept). He is a powder keg of emotions, and highly unstable.
~Too "Human": Finds it hard to harm the infected and other humans.

    Name: Dr. Daniel Müller M.D.
    Ethnicity: Southern German (Caucasian)
    Gender: Male
    Age: 38

    Height: 179cm
    Weight: 78kg
Hair: Well-kept and wavy light brown hair.
Eyes: Dark blue eyes with a shade of metallic gray around his pupils.
    Skin: Caucasian, well-tanned.
    Tattoos: None
    Piercings: None
    Scars: None

    Weaponry:

Job: Infectious Disease Diagnostician and Virologist at Saint Mary’s Hospital with Surgical Training and Certification
Specialization: Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Diagnostics

Notable skills: Surgery, Field Medicine, German (Native), English (Native), Chinese (Fluent).

Senses: Nonexistent, Bad, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Acute
    Sight: Acute
    Smell: Below Average
    Touch: Good
    Taste: Bad
    Sound: Above Average

    Equipment:
    • Lab coat
    • Stethoscope
    • Sterilized thermometer w/caps for reuse
    • Hand-held heart monitor
    • Medical Duffle bag with a surgical kit, medical supplies such as an intravenous kit and medical drugs such as morphine, interferon, antibiotics, antivirals, etc.
    • Personal Messenger bag made of black leather with notebooks, grade-book, pens, pencils, calculator, cell-phone, change of clothes (business casual attire), silver cigarette case, silver zippo, two German books, and an iPad.
    • Radio stolen from a National Guard member’s corpse

History: Born and raised in London to a German business family (his mother a German teacher, and his father an investor), Daniel grew up well-kept and wealthy. He learned German as his first language from a very early age and began showing interest in reading and learning before his first years of schooling. When he was old enough to recognize his own potential, a sharp rise in his grades was seen by his parents who began to realize their son’s unnatural ability for school. As he grew with a normal family life and a secondary school girlfriend, he gravitated towards the prospect of going to medical school and was soon offered an undergrad degree at both Cambridge and John Hopkins. Doing his first year of schooling in Cambridge, the young Daniel decided he did not want to live in England anymore and soon left the country for the United States with only his English, his German, and twenty thousand dollars loaned to him by his father.

Though John Hopkins offered him a full ride, it was far from easy for the prospective doctor and he soon found himself struggling to win over the college to allow him to remain on their roster for his graduate program and Medical Schooling. However, it was not a worry for the young man who soon found himself accepted into the Harvard School of Medicine with a full scholarship to play soccer for the school after showing his prowess at a scouting game and trying out for the team. Moving to Boston, he excelled in his medical schooling and was awarded a residency at one of the most prestigious Boston colleges. After completing his residency and being certified to practice medicine and perform surgery, he was drawn to Saint Louis by Saint Mary’s Hospital where he was put in charge of a diagnostics team in internal medicine.

Personality: Dr. Müller is a very bitter man with a hatred for those who are openly and willingly ignorant. He dislikes following the rules and feels he is overly qualified to work medial tasks. With little to no people skills, now that there is no rule of law he’d much rather put a bullet in your head than have to deal with your complaining. When it comes to practicing medicine he is precise and overly knowledgeable and sometimes considered the best doctor in Saint Louis.

    Strengths:
    • Book Smart: With an IQ of 185, Daniel Müller is an overly intelligent person with more intelligence on any subject than most believe exists. His strongest subjects are his native language, Chinese, and medicine. Specific medicine subjects he is strong with include virology, internal medicine, surgical procedures, and bacteriology.
    • Good Shot: Taking full advantage of the second amendment, the Doctor used to carry a Glock-17 everywhere he went. While he is not very confident with anything other than a handgun, he is capable of aiming a pistol and hitting a target with above average accuracy.
    • Eidetic Memory: Anything he sees or reads, Daniel can memorize immediately. He can read approximately 1,700 words a minute and can speak in three languages, meaning his memory is eidetic in three languages.

    Weaknesses:
    • Lacks Common Sense: For all the intelligence he has, he isn’t very “day smart”. He is carrying a radio that doesn’t work just because it is a radio and “you may never know when it chooses to work again” even though it adds an extra pound to the packs on his shoulder. He would much rather have old world conveniences and be in his lab coat and working his mandatory clinic hours at this point, than be pitted against the undead.
    • Easily Lost: He is not good with directions and cannot find his way on a map to save his own life.
    • White Collar: Used to driving his Audi R8 and living in his expensive condo, he is not very fond of roughing it in the wilderness and isn’t good on his feet cross-country wise.

Submitting a second character because everyone's a fucking sociopath and we need someone who isn't.

    Name: Sarah Schultz
    Ethnicity: Caucasian
    Gender: Female
    Age: 34
    Height: 5'8
    Weight: 118 lbs
    Hair: Blonde
    Eyes: Blue
    Skin: Slightly sunburned
    Tattoos: None
    Piercings: Studs in the ears
    Scars: None

    Weaponry:
    1 Compound Bow (7 arrows)
    1 Bowie Knife
    1 Walther PPK/S chambered in .380 ACP (2 mags)

    Job: Game Warden
    Specialization: Tracking, Rescue

    Notable skills:
Officer Schultz is quite skilled in navigation and tracking, and though she prefers to use a bow, she can handle a pistol or a rifle rather well. She also happens to be quite skilled at dealing with people, no matter whether she's giving someone information or writing a citation.

    Senses:
    Sight: Above Average
    Smell: Average
    Touch: Below Average
    Taste: Average
    Sound: Good

    Equipment:
    The clothes on her back
A backpack with rations for four days and a first aid kit
    1 Compound Bow
    7 Arrows
    1 Bowie Knife
    1 Walther PPK/S chambered in .380 ACP
    2 7-Round Magazines for Walther PPK/S (7/7)

    History:
Sarah grew up in in the American southeast--her father was a police officer and her mother was a housewife, and she spent plenty of time with children her age. She has an older brother, Henry, and her father would often take them hunting or fishing. Though she didn't really care for hunting, she enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her father and brother, and ended up taking up archery, placing in several local competitions and even winning a few.

Her brother followed in their father's footsteps, becoming a police officer, and Sarah attempted to take a different route... a long line of jobs eventually led to her being employed by the Department of Natural Resources as a game warden, and she found herself policing the forests instead of policing the streets. Despite her full-time job, she still kept up with her archery, keeping an eye open for amateur competitions (she was never good enough to go pro).

She was in St. Louis for an archery competition when the outbreak happened...

    Personality:
Sarah is friendly enough, and has more patience than she knows what to do with sometimes... but that doesn't mean she can't be tough--she's had plenty of experience over the years. Personally, she tends to keep a live-and-let-live attitude, worrying about her own problems over the problems of others. Professionally, she's helpful when she needs to be, and pleasant to be around.

    Strengths:
    Friendly, personable
    Excellent navigator
    Basic wilderness survival knowledge

    Weaknesses:
Less wary of strangers than she ought to be
    Hesitant to kill people
Taking me seriously is generally discouraged, mostly because even I don't take me seriously.

"In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move."

    Piercings: Earrings
    Scars: None

    Weaponry:
    • Taser
    • Combat knife
    • 2 Glock-26's
    • Aluminum bat

    Job: Secretary / MMA Fighter

Notable skills: Hand to hand combat, Basic Fire arm usage, knife throwing, hunting, Italian (Fluent), Spanish (Basic)

    Senses:
    Sight: Above Average
    Smell: Average
    Touch: Acute
    Taste: Acute
    Sound: Good

    Equipment:
    • Backpack
    • Water bottle
    • 12 Magazines
    • Sunglasses
    • Beef Jerky
    • Three sets of clothes
    • Map of St. Louis

History: Marilyn was born and raised in a small town in Arkansas. She was the youngest of five and an only daughter causing her to have bit of a strive to constantly prove herself equal. There her family went camping every weekend and her father taught her how to hunt and skin animals. At first she hated it but as she grew up she learned to love it all and actually started looking forward to the weekly camping trips. She started to see it more as a competition, trying to outdo her brothers in nearly every thing that they tried and besting a few of them.

When she turned 11 her mother grew gravely ill, after several long months of seeing her mother in a way she never wanted to the woman passed away. The camping trips stopped after that, her father losing the light in his eyes and never being the same. Still, she would sometimes run off into the woods and get away from the stress of her family life after that.

When she turned 18 she went to a school out of state, wanting to experience the world for herself. She moved to New York City, Brooklyn to be exact. It was there that she learned of her love of mixed martial arts and cage fighting. She started constantly visiting the gym and becoming extremely adept at the sport. She won several tournaments making a name for herself in the circles that followed the amateur circuits. After she received her baccalaureate in business she returned back south.

After living at her father's house for a month she couldn't take being treated like a child again and found a place in Louisiana. She stayed there for a few months, enjoying the autonomy yet close distance to home. However the relative peace she was experiencing ended when the infection broke out. Ever since then she's been scavenging for food and supplies, not staying in any place too long for fear of being attacked by the infected.

Personality: Marilyn is brash and impulsive. She was always the life of a party before the world died, known for being fun and direct. Never censoring herself, she says some of the rudest things and describes it away as part of her 'keeping it real'. Often described by others as a tomboy she is a big fan of physical challenges and was always hiking, biking, swimming, running, and anything to stay in shape. She was a student but had a job as an MMA fighter and was quickly rising in the ranks of her division, being utterly ruthless at the sport. When she doesn't like someone she lets them know to their face. Extremely short tempered it doesn't take much to get her upset and when she is upset it doesn't take much to get her to start swinging at whatever is bothering her.

She can be very arrogant, often overestimating what she can actually do. This usually left her with a very stressful weekend of large course loads and social events she promised to go to. However, in this new world it has almost gotten her killed several times. She is very wary of strangers, not trusting them even before the infection broke out. Despite what some people think about her, she does care about her appearance and goes out of her way to make sure she looks nice before leaving. It is harder in the new world but she still attempts to not look like one of the infected.

Marilyn is very strong willed and it takes a lot to break that part of her. She has experienced her fair share of heart break, loss, and death and has grown from all of these experiences.

She smiles in the face of danger, seeing it more as a challenge.

    Strengths:
    • Fighting Experience - Having been a fighter before the outbreak she knows how to physically best other people, even those that have an advantage on her size wise.

    • Wilderness Survival - Has camped and hunted her entire childhood.

    • Emotionally Calloused - No problems doing things that have to be done in order to survive.

    Weaknesses:
    • Arrogant - Overestimates her abilities, often tries to take on more than she is capable of handling. Has led to her almost being devoured several times due to overestimating how many infected she could take on.

    • Short Temper - Loses her cool easily which leads to doing impulsive actions that are most often not in her best interest or smart.

    • (Lack of) Brute Force - Not that strong in terms of power, very fast and agile but not so good at heavy lifting.

I'm going to leave some ideas here since Warty won't talk to me on Y!IM and nobody's in the chatroom at the moment, so let me know what you think.

First, I'm thinking that to motivate our characters to pursue the same goal and eventually meet up with each other, there should be a message being broadcast on all frequencies, telling survivors to gather at the Gateway Arch, where the National Guard will have some sort of safe zone/evac site set up. Of course, once we all get there, our characters will realize that the evac site was overrun some time ago, and now there's nothing left to facilitate an escape. Depending on how fresh the massacre is, there might be a lot of infected roaming about the area, but there will definitely be signs of a struggle, a few buttoned-up military vehicles (the occupants inside of which ought to be dead, for plot's sake), et cetera, et cetera. Our characters will then conveniently realize that they have to bug out or they'll end up dying in St. Louis.

I believe we ascertained that (and there is no way that our characters would know this, except maybe the Doc if Warty wants to be that way :P) the infection starts in Asia, spreads to Europe, then to Latin America, then into the southeastern United States, meaning that the infection will largely be spreading north and west. Some people are fleeing to Canada, others are fleeing to the Rockies, which will eventually become the United States' line in the sand, with the Pacific states being largely reclaimed or held by humanity. So, the zeds are going to largely be following the survivors, with pockets of infected left in major cities or besieging other safe zones. St. Louis will, obviously, be one of those pockets of infected.

I believe that zombie-related culture should still be available, that way our characters can be like "what the fuck, no way," but they wouldn't be like "I have absolutely no clue what these things are let's hug the infected until they're cured!" Unless, of course, your character happens to be the sheltered kind of person who's never heard of zombies, which I don't think any of our characters would qualify... there would just be differing levels of disbelief amongst them, et cetera, et cetera. Obviously, those of us who want to have Max Brooks' Zombie Survival Guide on their persons (Lupus) may do so, but those who believe in a certain style of zombie (for example, Brooks Zombies don't run, but 28 Days Zombies do) might be terribly disappointed to find out that the zombies they're expecting are different from what they'd been led to believe. :P

Anyway, my two cents for now. Let me know what you think.

Also, kind of getting tired of waiting, so... I kind of went ahead and made the IC.

    Sorry, Warty.

So we've got Colin and Sarah wandering up I-44, Doc Muller is taking refuge in a hospital a couple miles down the road, and Paulie is across the river, coming in from the northeast...
