Hunter of Shadows: Here you go, I went with a sectioned background and a pop-out figure, deepening the colors to add dark and mysterious you were looking for. If you want anything changed let me know. I seem to recall you couldn't use Imgur so I uploaded to my photobucket.

She's probably using guidelines in Photoshop. So dragging things along a ruler in order to get things to line up and remain the same size. Then it's simply a matter of the rectangular marquee tool (selection tool), delete, and adding drop shadow to the layer. I think.

Sliced up effect? Like the one I just did? I generally make a copy of the layer I want sliced with the pop out. Then using guides I line up the places I will cut out on the main image, making the copy invisible (having set it up to be a transparency). Then I use the rectangle select (after setting up that the select should snap to guides and to canvas edges) and select the parts to be removed and delete them. Then I do the drop shadow effect under filters. Then you make the copy visible and using the free select tool I cut out the image I want to pop out and remove the stuff around it. Then sometimes I use a drop shadow on that.

if that doesn't make any sense, PM me and I will try to explain better. There may be a better way to do this, but it's what I've sort of fumbled my way into.
