Tales of the Magi (OOC) [Reboot]

Long ago, the gods gave the world magic and with magic they created the race of Magi. The Magi were the most gifted with the god given powers and could stand equal to the gods themselves. But, like always, power corrupts. The Magi nearly tore the world asunder. The gods put an end to their mistake by sending a magical scourge over the world, killing millions and stripping the power from most Magi. The Magi that were left had very little power anymore, many getting slaughtered by wild beasts or mad mobs. Those who survived relearned their magic and went on with their lives, cursing the gods til the day they died. The descended of the Magi are the magic wielding Mages, somewhat inferior compared to their forefathers but they still stand over others but are also cursed. Mages may learn magic but to really able to unlock their powers they must go through vigorous tests that not all survive or come from sane.

Towers have been erected to teach the young magic users the secrets and dangers of magic. Magic is their direct link to the gods, but many things are also of magic, many whispering things that promise power yet only return their favors with betrayal. The towers often prevent such things to poison the minds of their students but not always do they succeed and less so does the student survive his deals.

Each tower is a marvel of magical architecture. Now living hands would be able to build anything that compares to it. A mage's tower is tall, nearly fifty levels at most to the sky and each level is much larger than it is on the outside. Each tower is also controlled by an Archmage, a master of many fields of magic. He or she over sees their tower and is held responsible when a mage in the region goes rogue. Along with the the Archmage, the towers are also watched by the Paladins, holy knights that make sure that magic is kept in check. Their order is somewhat resistant to magic and there for the perfect guardians of the populous that are under siege by renegade mages.

Paladins specifically tasked to hunt down renegade mages are called The Seekers. Unlike most paladins, these are not always the heavy armored men and women. More often than not they wear simple robes or just light armor of their religion and carry two handed swords, blessed to zap the strength from the mages. The blessings and material which the weapons are made of are very rare and only assigned to the Seekers.

There are currently three Magi Towers that mages inhabit and use for the teachings of magic, the rest being either destroyed, abandoned, haunted or all of the above. They are scattered through out the world of Arlon, one for each major continent.
There is Sel Sufos in Kherno, the largest country in the eastern regions. The tower excels at potion making due to Kherno having vast jungles and exotic plants. Sel Sufos has the Archmage Hogen Kiichi, the oldest and wisest of the Archmages but without the magic he'd just be a frail old man that has an expensive taste for sake.
In the land of Hveliron, the northern regions of Arlon and is famed for it's frozen wastes, the tower of Epos resides. The Archmages thatt oversees Epos is Archmage Freki Whitesage, a human who is famous for his magics which he uses to enhance his fighting abilities.
The last tower is Carnor in Redmoor in the Western regions of Arlon. The Archmage of Carnor is shrouded in mystery for he wears a mask to cover his face and his voice his muffled but still audible and not to mention he never reveals all his power. He has taken the name Ravenor.
There are also little schools for toddlers that discover their special gift at a very early age. The usual age group going to a mage's tower is about 13-15. Schools serve to keep the magic at a controlable state, barely teaching any new magic. Those schools serve more like an orphanage.
At the age of 16 or older, apprentices will go through The Trial

    Archmage Ravenor

"Welcome to the tower of Carnor, young magic user. Here you will study not only how to wield your given power but also various other things, such as alchemy, history and even swordmanship just to name a few. Since our order is so small many apprentices will take the teachings from many of the experience mages that reside here. Here we shall take care of your well being for this is your new home. You will have regular three meals a day that is provided by the people of the tower. You will not be swimming in luxury however. You will take jobs in and outside of the tower. The town of Wayfare is a couple of leagues away and there you can take jobs. Fortunately the town is one of the major trading posts so earning steel should not be hard for you.
There are now almost 70 apprentices learning here and as you saw when you arrived this tower does not seem the tall splender like the other towers but Carnor has everything you need. Alchemy labs are regularily stocked with herbs and concoctions and the library is filled with books and scrolls that will help you in your studies. All of you that are just arriving you will go to the third floor and get a bunk. All apprentices have to share one large room. Only when you work up and pass our tests, you will have your own private chambers"

May the blood of the Magi flow strong within our veins. Their spirit make us strong and wise.

    Name: Kairon Kain
    Gender: Male
    Age: 18
    Race: Hakedian

Personality: Cheerful, sarcastic, jester, somewhat manipulative, distant.
    Back Story:
Kain grew up in the city of Trasis, way west of the tower of Carnor. He grew up with his mother who was a scullery maid at an inn. In his childhood he was taught how to cook and learned from the inn cook about edible herbs and how to make spices. He had a fairly good childhood until the age of 9 he started to discover his special gift but his mother made him hide it well. She didn't want to lose him. To calm himself, Kain went out on jogs and runs, able to maneuver through the tight and small streets with ease and not having to stop. He one day got more daring and started to run on the roofs since buildings were so closely stacked together.
At the age of 13 his magic was starting to spindle out of control at times and it wasn't making his mother's life easier. One night he had kept her up with some nightmares he was having so when she worked she wasn't really paying much attention to her surroundings. She tripped a very drunk and very mad sellsword who thought she was a thief in his drunken haze and in his drunken rage he had beat her nearly to death and killed her by slitting her throat. The man would've hanged the next day if Kairon hadn't walked into the common room just after the murder. The man got roasted by torrents of lightning that came from Kain's hands.
After that he was sent to a Mage school, closely watched by paladins, until he came of age and went to the tower of Carnor.
Skills before the tower: Cooking, Spice making, Herb Lore, Athletics, Maneuvering, Balance, Acrobatics.
Magic Focus: Lightning, Fire, D-Clairvoyance, D-Nature.

(Will probably edit it in the future, Back story is incomplete, but other then that, it's done.)

    Name: Nova Lilit

    Gender: Female

    Age: Seventeen

    Race: Human

Personality: A quiet, "shy" girl, Nova has trouble approaching the crowd and trying to fit in. Her face is normally blank, making her appear detached and rather stoic. Inside, though, her emotions are a never ending turmoil, her embarrassments and over-thinking brain constantly giving her a quizzical look from time to time. She moves with small hops in her step and is constantly tripping over her own feet. When actually around people, she appears sweet and kind, always blushing or acting flustered when something happens. This, however, could be considered an act. Around people she knows closely, like her family, she has a sadistic and clingy personality, constantly putting people downnwi insulting jokes and then apologizing in odd ways, like hurling paper balls with apologies at that one person's head.

In a fight, she is rowdy and finds pleasure in the reactions of her opponents. Her constant sharp insults are used as distractions, as she is not as fast or strong as other. She uses her quick wits instead of physical power. She cocky and believes herself to be quite powerful when in reality she is merely mortal. Her shy act is completely over shadowed by her sadistic smile when in fights. A smile that only fades when she beats her opponent.

Back Story: Nova was born into a poor family in the slum city of [Enter City Name]. Everyday she woke up hungry and fell asleep the same way. Nova didn't complain, didn't laugh or cry. She lived everyday in a remote, hungry silence. Her family was small; just a mother, father, and daughter, yet it was nearly impossible for them to find any good work. Nova soon took to stealing to try and help her family. She took from unattended food stands, the pockets of strangers, and sometimes even dumpsters. She managed to feed her family and even gain some treasures to play and read with. Her love of books grew from her stealing days; she would find sometimes discarded books on the street or maybe an unattended stand where many books were being sold. She took what she could carry home and taught herself how to read and write.
Years passed and Nova grew older, having discovered her own gifts her own way. Her father had finally found work and Nova finally had no reason to steal anymore. She was twelve and the next year would be her entrance to a Mage tower. During a trip into town, she was able to find another old, thrown away book titled "Evil Eyes". Intrigued, Nova brought it home to read.

Skills before entering the tower: High intelligence, sharp tongue, Wicked Eye, carving and using small knives, writing, drawing, and pick pocketing.

Magic Focus: Simple spells like fire and ice for the time being. Dabbles in a bit of transformation and clairvoyence. Is quick to over use spells like lightening in a fight.

Wicked Eye: Covered by an eyepatch that is marked with a protective seal, the cursed eye is said to cause injury and bad luck to those who look into it (lasting for a shorter or longer period of time; dependent on how long you stare), as well as the ability to see magical and sometimes paranormal entities (barely). If unsealed for too long, the host will begin to gain scars and strained veins around the eye and will soon begn to loose energy. Sees in black and white (magical and paranormal entities appear in color). Normally a bright yellow color.

    Name:
    Charlotte Kesler
    Gender:
    Female
    Age:
    19
    Race:
    Human
    Appearance 1:

    Appearance 2:

    Personality:
Charlotte is, in one word, gentle. Her voice is soft, her movements are light and flimsy. However polite and well-mannered her speech is, you will never see her raise her voice no matter what, she is never cross, though she is somewhat strict. She is always smiling, always interested in others' well being, but at the same time you can't help but notice those quiet, tiny little sarcastic quirks she does tend to have. She'll gladly insult you, but her tone of voice will suggest otherwise. Sweet as sugar and as dangerous as calories. In battle she is ever the aggressor, fighting for complete victory and only stopping when told to. She will gladly wish you luck one minute, the next completely demolishing you.
She enjoys the company of people and loves discussing things. She is very curious and loves prying into other people's business. She loves explaining fundamentals. She is a follower, never a leader, but for whatever reason has trouble working well with others. She is submissive and docile, she is gentle. And yet there's that sadistic, battle-hungry side that she has, all the while with that same gentle smile...
    Back Story:
    Charlotte was a strange child.
Most children loved to play with toys and other children, but Charlotte liked to pick apart bugs and flowers and tormented others. It was a frightening thing, really, for such an innocent child to do such terrible things. What made it puzzling was that her parents never mistreated her, so the source of this cruelty was truly a mystery. For a long time they kept Charlotte from the world and did their best to teach her right. When that didn't work, they became much more strict, and only then did she slowly start to improve.
She became well mannered though she stayed away from others her age, knowing that they feared her. She got along much better with those younger than she, and that was when she realized that they looked up to her. She became kind and did her best to be that role model they viewed her as, but deep, deep down she longed to do terrible things.
It was around that time that her powers manifested, and her outlet was found: whenever she could use that power, she felt absolute delight in crushing her enemies. Still, it wasn't very strong, and in fact her forte was the complete opposite. She was best as a healer, which she found very strange. Even her own powers were trying to tell her to be kind. As such, she trained herself the best she could, and healing was soon a breeze. Still, that bloodlust that surfaced every now and then just couldn't be quenched, so in secret she began to practice the other way, too.
Charlotte hopes the academy will make her stronger. Healing can only get her so far.
    Skills before entering the tower:
Quite the seamstress; all articles of clothing she possesses are made by her own hands. She is very crafty as well, creating charms and trinkets out of almost anything. She also is infatuated with anything musical, her forte being anything with strings, including the piano.
    Magic Focus:
Energy - all that living beings use to function daily. Her power manifests by drawing pure energy together into a visible, white colored strain. With this strain, she can fire non-elemental magics at her opponents, or use that same magic to heal an ally. It is noted that the latter is much stronger then the former simply because energy is meant to be distributed between living things, thus while healing is but a breeze, it is much harder to use that energy offensively.

Oh, hm. Woops, didn't notice this.

I'll strike up a character tonight or so.

Edit: Can I be a shape-changer with a few forms?

    So many choices!
Creating a character is going to be harder than I thought.

    Timed Shawcrin

    Gender:
    Male.
    Age:
    Seventeen.
    Race:
    Human.

    Personality:
Cocky and proud of his skills, Timed is quite the opposite of what his name would represent. He faces challenges with the determination of a stubborn mule. He doesn't like giving up to challenges at all, and will do anything to prevent himself from losing. Some say his determination is his downfall, seeing as most of the time it'll often end with him getting beaten up by a senior member, but, no, he'll keep bragging about his power and fight anyone who says otherwise. So, if you decide to give him a job, expect it done most of the time, unless, that ends with him getting killed or something along those lines.
    Back Story:
Timed was born under a successful merchant family. He grew up with plenty of privileges that many of the other children did not get. Such as a warm meal every night, and a good education. Though, he wasn't always a cocky bastard. He used to play with the peasant children, often bringing small treats to share. Though, when he discovered his special skills, it changed him. At the age of ten, he could feel the energy of the Magi coursing through him, like most other magicians. At first, he kept it from his parents, and, not knowing much, used it mainly to entertain his friends, casting small, illusions, like fireworks and such.

His parents quickly learned of his skills, and immediately put him under the hands of a Magi. He taught him new things, how his powers worked, the works. Though, Timed quickly started to grow bolder and bolder, even shunning his peasant friends and calling them 'bad blood'. His parents caught word of this and sent him to the tower of Carnor, to study under the rigid hands of the top magicians. They thought that would be the trick to straighten his attitude, though, even if he learned discipline, he'll always be a cocky bastard, though, not as much as he used to be.
    Former Skills:
Not much, he studied under a noble swordsman for a while, so his skills with the blade are primed, he can handle himself in a fight if the sword gets involved. He prefers a hand and a half sword.
    Magic Focus:
As most magicians, he dabbles in a lot of subjects, like fire spells, ice, the like. But what came to him most easily, is shape shifting. He can easily shift into a form within' a minute or two, unlike most other mages who try it out and it takes them a five minutes to fully transform. He varies in his preferred forms, but has one he enjoys to use often. His preferred form is a small cat. He can form into five forms thus far. A mouse. An owl. A black cat. A lynx, and an snake. It takes a good amount of energy to transform, and he prefers to wait a while before switching between forms and such.

His cat form can also transform into a lynx, for more of a combative form.

    Name: Simona Ferris

    Gender: Female

Age: Simona is 17 years old.

    Race: Human

Appearance 1: Simona is slightly below average height, she is long limbed and slender. Simona have a beautiful face with large, almond shaped, brown eyes, pale skin and a small, full lipped mouth, her skin is pale and is framed by long, straight dark brown hair that she usually wear up into a bun. Simona speaks with a melodious smile and walks with a spring in her step though there is often sadness and weariness in he eyes.

Appearance 2: Simona now wear her apprentice's robes but before she came to Carnor for training she wore embroidered linen and cotton dresses with white linen shirts. Simona likes dresses which are of fine quality but not to flashy and not to revealing, the young woman always wear her hair braided up into complicated buns held by a pair of wooden hairsticks.

Personality: Simona is friendly and kind, some might see her as a bit of a prude since she always want to do the right thing and she might advice others to walk the narrow path as well. Simona appears happy and content but at times her past haunts her but she often hold such emotions close to the chest. All in all Simona is a good woman, wise beyond her years, but under the surface she have a little trouble trusting other people. Simona likes order but she also know how to have fun.

Back Story: Simona Ferris was born the daughter of two servants in a high lord's castle, her mother was maid to one of the lord's aunts and her father worked in the stables. Simona was lucky, Lord Caden allowed the children of his servants to attend the classes the tutors hired to teach his own children held and Simona learned how to read and write as well as simple mathematics and other skills usually reserved for the rich. Simona grew up safe and happy and when she was eleven one of the castle's scribes took her on as an apprentice, her parents where ecstatic, life as a scribe would mean their daughter never would want for anything, yes indeed it seamed like the Gods had smiled on Simona's life from the start.

When Simona was thirteen Lord Caden died and his oldest son Stephan took over the manor, where Caden had been wise and kind Stephen was a tyrant, and unfortunately he was a tyrant who lusted after Simone. The young scribe's apprentice wanted nothing to do with Lord Stephen and his wicked ways but that did not stop the young nobleman, several times he came to Simona's small chamber and raped her, and when her father tried to stop him he had the man executed and Simona's mother sent from the manor in disgrace.

For three years Simona suffered the whims of Lord Stephen, there where no one to help her, who would take the side of a lowly scribe's apprentice over a high lord? Every now and again Lord Stephen would come and have his way with Simona in the most degrading ways possible, but one night the young woman had her revenge. Simona did not know she was a mage, but suddenly as Lord Stephen was on top of her something blossomed inside her and on instinct Simona lashed out. A spike of ice materialized out of nowhere in Simona's hand and she drove it deep into her rapist's heart ending her torment and his life in one fell swoop.

Off course Simona got arrested and the Seeker was called to deal with this obviously rouge mage. Stephen's family demanded that Simona be executed but the Seekers saw that the young girl on trial for her life had not meant to do harm, she had just reacted to a horrible situation and magic had awoken inside of her to help her when she needed it most. The Paladins managed to convince the nobles that the best thing would be to send Simona away to Carnor for her training and by that they saved her life.

Simona have just arrived at the tower of Carnor, it have been discovered that she have a talent for ice magic and the young woman is both exited and scared to learn. Simona feels that she owe the Paladins her life and she want to find some way to repay them for saving her, now she is all set to begin her new life and become the mage that she obviously was meant to be.

Skills before entering the tower: Simona can read and write, she know how to copy texts and keep books, she was a scribe's apprentice so she have some scholarly skills. Simona have a nice singing voice, other than that she is a decent housekeeper and a somewhat good rider.

Magic Focus: Ice Magic, Water Elementalist. Simona can make ice out of the water in the air or freeze bodies of water, she also have abilities in general water magic.

(Character for your considerate approval, thanks!)

    Name:
    Salinea Cruashlai
    Gender: Female
    Age: 18
    Race: Hakedian
    Appearance:

    Outfit:

Personality: Speculative, untrusting, quite, observant, unsympathetic but can be kind, can be both a follower or a leader depending on her mood.
Back Story: Salinea had been cursed since birth. Her parents were horrified to learn they had given birth to a Hakedian. Memories of any Hakedian blood in family genealogy were long since forgotten. Her father was very angry with her mother believing she had committed adultery in some form or fashion. The stress and horrible shame was so heavy upon her mother that she died before Salinea was even three years old. Salinea’s father, however, was determined to make the most out of this mistake. Because Salinea was his only child he taught her everything he knew at a very strict and rough pace. With her father being the Captain of the Guard in Ruyandi, a large harboring city of merchants and trading vessels, Salinea grew up in the shadow of sword-wielding companions. She was taught very efficiently how to fight with weapons. And given her Hakedian nature for selfishness, pride, and mischief; it was very easy to have some kind of street-smarts about her. She spent every day trying to live up to her father’s expectations while trying to hide her Hakedian roots. Most certainly hard to do with shapely horns, which she tried grinding down to nothing but stubs so that they wouldn’t be seen. And not to mention her uncanny ability to tap into magic! It made her physically sick to do so and tried desperately to never think about the potential of possessing powers. But one event in the dark hours of a bleak night changed everything in her known world. Her father was in trouble having been ran down by an under lord of Ruyandi. He was outnumbered and by the time she got to him he was dead. Salinea vowed revenge and hunted her father’s murderer down. In this struggle she nearly lost her life as well. But in the last moment before the sword of her enemy was driven through her chest a surge of dark magic swelled out of her and engulfed the man entirely, setting him ablaze. She had won, but her life was now forever changed. Knowing Ruyandi held nothing more for her since her father was dead she enlisted herself into a Mage school, allowing her Hakedian horns to grow untouched. Her new teachers tried telling her again and again to put down the sword; that it was hindering her magical ability. At times she would, excelling in the arts of Fire, but at a slow pace for she refused to be found far from a sharp-pointed weapon. When she turned of age, they graduated her to the Tower of Carnor.
Skills before the tower: Sword fighting, agility, close encounter defense, skill with various weapons such as bow and daggers and staff.
    Magic Focus: so far, Fire.
